2008 Preseason and Regular season Polls

I think that if you say your reason is that being #1 puts a bullseye on our back or anything like that, I'm dinging your ass back into the Mesozoic Era...I shit you not.

Anyone--that's anyone--who is fucking stupid enough to think that being #5 (or anything other than #1) to start the season is preferable to starting at #1 is truly a retard. We're Ohio State, and everyone we play has our game date circled on their calendars, regardless of our ranking. We never fly under anyone's radar or sneak up on anyone. You think USC is going to play us less tough if we were #5 instead of #1?

If we start out at #5 and any two of those ahead of us don't lose, then even if we win out we're fucked. If we start at #1, we obviously control our own destiny.

Don't hold back Mili...tell us how you really feel.

Exactly.

ESPN - Buckeyes rise to No. 1 in updated Top 25 - College Football

2. Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia might be more explosive and talented than Ohio State, but the Bulldogs' schedule is much tougher.

correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the "top 25" a scale of where they are now not where they will be at the end of the season? Which is why I hate when they bring schedule into these things. If you rank the teams it should be based on talent, intangables, coaching, chemestry, etc. otherwise put Boise St or Hawaii up in the top 5 every year.

They're a better team, but they're ranked lower because they have a harder schedule. Great logic if you ask me.

:shake:

That being said, I'm still glad we're number one in the poll. Their stupidity isn't really doing too much to us here. Haha

The ridiculous part is that these writers puts tOSU there, then criticize the team with any chance. I think this year though that some writers may understand last year was an anomaly in cfb and come around some, and a road win at USC will help the image.

Using ESPN's own rankings system, whatever it may be, Georgia's schedule is indeed tougher....

Plays #5 Florida, # 10 Auburn #12 LSU #13 ASU and #15 Tennessee

Ohio State plays the "much" weaker schedule of
#4 USC
#16 Illinois
#18 Wisconsin
#24 Michigan State
#25 Penn State

Friggin idiots. I don't know why anyone would take them seriously. Using their own rankings, I'm hard pressed to find the "MUCH" here... I could live with "Georgia plays a tougher schedule than Ohio State" because at least the remark is internally consistent. Instead, we're left to assume spots 16 - 25 of the poll are far and away worse than 10 - 15. Is Auburn better than Penn State? Sure. But, I'm not sure they're all that much better than Illinois...

I digress... my real problem with this "poll" is that having Penn State ranked at all is proof positive they're just mailing this one in.

That's the way a preseason poll SHOULD be voted on, but the pundits have turned the preseason poll into personal guesses as to what the final poll will look like.

That has a lot to do with the outside world's perception of the Big 10.

Phil Steele's magazine is available next month. By far the most accurate and in depth analysis of college football I have seen.

While I agree, Phil would do better to write strictly about the upcoming teams and their players and what his little formulas tell him each team will do this year, and spend much less time recapping what successes he's told us all about in the past....

I didn't get last year's mag, so maybe he's changed his style, but I remember reading too much:

In 2002, I was the only one who had Ohio State as high as #7 to begin the year, and 3 of my 7 matrix had them going undefeated. In 2003, I predicted that they'd again finish among the tops in the nation, and they did ending up #4. In 2004, it didn't take a lot to realize they would be replacing most of their team with freshman or r/s players and this team, as I predicted then, grew as the season went along. Now, in 2005, I have the Buckeyes poised to win a lot of games as they build off 04. The game with Texas will be huge.

So... he's not really saying anything at all.... but, again, I DO agree with you that his mag is probably still the best, that notwithstanding.
