Just something I have been keeping track of and finally figured an easy way to post it. These are my hopefuls for 2008. Others I strongly considered: DE Keith Wells, DE Quinton Coples, DL Ben Jones, DT Justin Thompson, DT Brandon Thompson (I reeeeally want him in Columbus, but I will wait to see more mutual interest and a visit before I start predicting him), ATH Isaiah Pead (grades), ATH D.J. Woods (game film). Let me know what you guys think.

If that ends up as the incoming class for 2008 there will be unbounded joy amongst the Buckeye faithful.

No doubt. With the guys still left uncommitted, I tried to put their reported top schools in there as well, with most of the having us in their top 2 and at least top 3-4.

That chart looks pretty good, but I really don't think we land Fuller or Filer, and we will wind up w/ Justin Thompson-he wants to make an impact right away and I think Heacock/Tressel will let him do just that.

Could someone in this thread who believes that Goebel is more important than Pryor please explain to me how DT is such a position of need. I honestly just don't get it.

1. Would it be factual to say that it is unlikely for a true freshman DT to make an immediate impact?

2. Wouldn't that then mean that Garrett shouldn't be expected to make a real impact unitl 2009 at the earliest?

3. Does our 2009 DT depth chart have two talented 5th year seniors (Denlinger and Worthington) who will likely be going into their 3rd year as starters?

4. Will they not be backed up by two outstanding juniors (Larrimore and Heyward) who would likely have the inside track at starting in 2010?

How then is DT such an immediate need? Granted, it sucks that we don't have a decent DT on the team that is a junior or senior. Nothing we can do about that now though. It has absolutely nothing to do with any recruit we will be after this year. Our freshman and sophomores are well above average and there are 2 in each class, pretty much the ideal number.

What is it that I am missing about this situation?

It's called depth. People do get tired while playing from time to time. We've had great success rotating lineman in and out of games. Also, knock on wood, people get injured from time to time. Just having two solid starters... or even three or four solid contributors isn't enough to have the type of depth needed to have a solid rotation and to ensure that their isn't a significant drop off if a starter is injured.

wow

That is an awesome job. My only change would be taking Mobley off. Given what I have heard from EP folks I think he is going to stay closer to home.

Who would replace him... people involved with certain football programs in MN are the only people I know so I can't guess. I can hope for Wells, Coples, or one of the Thompsons (preferably not the JUCO).

I understand there is such a thing as depth and that injuries happen. But, we have 4 very good DTs who are all sophomores are younger. Those guys are both the future and present of the position. My question is not why we would like to get more good DTs. Obviously it would be nice to get 1-2 every single year so that there is good depth. I would like to get Goebel and another DT this year. But, I don't see it as the huge need that seemingly everyone else does.

My question, which you really haven't answered, is why do people make DT seem like a huge, pressing, dire need? Why is it considered to be so crucial when barring injuries a DT recruit likely will not even be able to crack the two deep until 2010? Aren't there positions (DE for example) where the young depth is not as good as it is at DT? Wouldn't TP have a much better chance of being a starter by 2010 than any DT recruit we land?
