Another "fearless prediction..." from CNNSI:

Fearless predictions for the 2008-2009 NCAA football season - Austin Murphy - SI.com

Looks like Austin has similar sentiment...

"4. I predict the Buckeyes will launch their run at a third-consecutive national-title game by taking down USC at the L.A. Coliseum on September 13 in what will be the lowest-scoring game of the season for both teams. Laurinaitis, fellow LB Marcus Freeman & Co. will stifle the Trojans' rushing attack, inviting first-year starter Mark Sanchez to beat them with the pass. He won't.

15. I predict that the third time will be the charm for Brutus Buckeye."

:oh:

Although I follow what you're saying, I think that was meant to read "making it 2 NC's for Jim Tressel, this one coming in Miami" or to put it another way "this time in Miami, Jim Tressel will win his 2nd NC for the Buckeyes." I don't really think it was sloppy journalism, just a confusing sentence... which I guess could be argued as sloppy journalism.

Screw it, I'm tired and going to bed. heh...

49ers legends give Buckeyes secrets for sustained success

Friday, July 25, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Chicago- Ohio State was named the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten by conference media on Thursday. You think Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott would be impressed?
It was no shock that the three-time defending conference champs were picked for a four-peat. Since spring practice, OSU coach Jim Tressel has been wary of boring his veteran Buckeyes with things they've heard and done before. So during the summer doldrums, Tressel decided to blind his players with Super Bowl rings, bringing in former San Francisco 49ers Rice, Lott, Joe Montana and Roger Craig to talk to the team. Tressel knows former 49ers owner Ed DeBartolo Jr., a Youngstown native.
"Coaches might come in and talk to you," senior left tackle Alex Boone said recently, mentioning a visit by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "But when people come in who have been in our shoes, you tend to listen more.

Too much talent on other teams to say that Sept 13 will be for the championship.....still alot of football to be played. Everyone will be gunning for OSU as well as USC, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma......

I do believe, however, that if OSU falters against USC, that it would take twice as big a miracle as happened last year for OSU to be in the BCS championship game. Most of the voters (speculation) would like to see OSU lose so they can keep us out of Miami on Jan 5th.

However, it is fortunate for OSU that they catch USC early, with an OL in flux, and a relatively 'new' qb unsettled, and OSU with 19 returning starters. That may be what carries the day for the Buckeyes. Don't know for sure (my crystal ball is on the fritz), but there's plenty of talent on both teams, and talent and desire make for good/great teams. Their senior leadership is as good as ours, and in some areas their players are as good if not better. They're deep, and they have had many 'laughers' where the 2's and 3's got some gametime. All in all, it'll be a 'barnburner'.

Go Bucks, and by the way, kudos to BP staff. This website is far superior to WeAreSC.com in every way......

PS, anyone know how I can import my avatar (and the Go Bucks smilies) to that website?

... Their senior leadership is as good as ours...

You said most voters want us to lose and called it speculation. But so many voters who are also journalists have reported that they (and others they know) feel that way, one has to wonder if it isn't just an objective fact.

Then you make the above statement and DON'T label it as speculation. Is the senior leadership of EITHER team a given at this point?

One has to wonder if you had the "speculation" disclaimer in the wrong place. Cut-and-paste error maybe? :wink2:

NCAA football
Buckeyes won't let LSU loss haunt '08
Last year's team often heard about defeat to Florida

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CHICAGO -- It's a good bet that 3-8-2-4 is not the door code to the Ohio State practice facility.
Last year, coming off a devastating loss to Florida in the national championship game, coach Jim Tressel employed a string of reminders to help motivate his team.
Among those ploys was using the Florida game score (41-14) as the door code. Right up to a few weeks before this past national title game, the tactic continued. Tressel sent his players home for the holiday break with DVDs that featured numerous national commentators trashing the Buckeyes.
It was the season's overriding theme.
"Everywhere we go, there's something that we do that reminds us of that (loss)," tight end Rory Nicol said last August.
It didn't work. In the 2008 title game, Louisiana State triumphed 38-24.

Was looking at some Vegas odds yesterday(wish I kept the site). This odds maker only gave us a 3% shot of going undefeated. USC had much better odds.(5-20%). If USC beats us, they get to the National Championship game. According to this odds maker we go 11-2. Lose to SC and at Wiscy and win the Big Ten, go to the RB and play ASU or Oregon.

OSU football notebook: Those who passed on NFL know there are no guarantees

Sunday, July 27, 2008 3:23 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Even a driven man needs a break now and again, which is what Malcolm Jenkins scheduled for himself the past week. "I took the week off," said the Ohio State senior cornerback, projected to be a contender for first-team All-America this season. "We've been going hard this whole summer, working out twice a day, and most of it's not even mandatory.
"A lot of guys have been in putting in extra work, so I think everybody is enjoying this week off."
Though preseason camp opens a week from today, the players will be back in the office, so to speak, on Monday. Jenkins, linebackers James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman, lineman Alex Boone and receiver Brian Robiskie likely would have been in NFL training camps by this point had they not opted to return.
Their presence is a big reason why the Buckeyes are favored to win an unprecedented third straight outright Big Ten title (their fourth straight overall), and contend for a third straight trip to the national title game.
