2008 Buckeye Football Season

Thanks for the link, OB. Another fine round of articles by Fiutak and the CFN staff. In the Big Ten unit rankings, there is only one OSU unit not ranked in the top two (DT). I got a kick out of this line from the conference preview:

Third, the league simply hasn?t been as bad as you think. Yeah, when you have Michigan losing to Appalachian State, Northwestern losing to Duke, Iowa losing to Western Michigan and Minnesota losing to North Dakota State, everyone will notice, but other leagues had their embarrassments (like Alabama losing to UL Monroe, Oklahoma State getting thumped by Troy, and UCLA getting blown out by a depleted Utah and a horrible UCLA), and the Big Ten had its share of impressive moments, but they seem to be pushed by the wayside.

Must have missed that one. Can't wait for the UTEP vs. Bizzaro UTEP game this year.

I'm ok with our DT's not being ranked in the top 2

Dude, you're posting @ 4:56 a.m. I wouldn't be shocked if pink bunnies started telling you the final score of this year's USCum game! Put down the Yoohoo and catch some sleep. The season is almost here. We'll wake ya before kickoff. :wink2:

This is a good year for defensive lines in the Big 10. Iowa has a decent line but no back 7. Wiscy should have a good line, and it might have been the best if it weren't such a M*A*S*H unit. PSU still has a good D-line, but yeah, I like ours better. TSUN also has a good D-line.

Some time in the next week I'll be posting the final Differential Stats for last year, and TSUN's defense is going to end up looking alot better than a lot of people think.

I truly believe that by the end of the season our DL will be performing with anyone, and I believe we have depth as good as anyone's. But if they aren't top-2 at the start of the year, that's OK.

Because our Back-7 is so far ahead of everybody else it isn't even fair. You could take the all-stars of the 10 other teams in the league and not come even close to our back-7.

Most of their previews are full of typos, cut-and-paste errors and unfinished-editing errors (like that one).

When Fiutak was interviewed on 1460thefan by Chris Spielman, he mentioned how they had bit off more than they could chew this year and that most of the previews were being completed in great haste. It sounded like he was pre-apologizing for the quality...

I haven't seen much about the kids who came in last year and are just now starting their first year of eligibility. A lot was made of some of these kids a year ago and expectations of doing well this year. Well nobody left except Vern so now what about guys like Herron, Oliver, Pentello, Evege, Delande, Jackson and Smith, and more.
I saw Herron at the spring game before I left and he ran strong the few time I saw him. I know we have expectations for these kids.
What do you guys think ? do we have a surprise coming or a possible star?

Who are Jackson and Smith?

Oliver looked really good in run support in the spring game. He made some really impressive sideline tackles. If he improves in pass coverage, he'll be a stud.

I'd like to know what's going on with Evege too. He has a lot of athleticism and came off as a really good person.

Herron is the most likely to have an impact this season. He can help take some of the load for Beanie in short yardage situations. I'm sure the coaches will be aware of keeping Beanie healthy/fresh for the long haul. From what I saw in the spring game, Herron should be able to contribute more than that, but carries will be coveted with all the RBs we have. The other guys will surely see some special teams duty and add depth. There are juniors who are still waiting for major playing time For a youngster to play a lot, they'd have to blow it up in camp. Certainly not out of the question.

Bob Hunter commentary: Fans willing to set bar high, if no one else will

If informal, how-about-those-Bucks conversations mean anything, the Ohio State football team that reports today faces an interesting challenge. No fan I've spoken with in the past few months sees it losing more than one game this season. None. There has been no talk of potential road upsets at Michigan State or Wisconsin. No worry about an Illinois repeat. No fear of Michigan. Some concede that the Buckeyes might lose at Southern Cal on Sept. 13, but most think they won't.
At a school where great expectations can sometimes be a curse, this team probably shoulders as big a burden as any team in school history.
The players will tell you those high standards are one reason they came to Ohio State and that is no doubt true, but the unforgiving nature of this situation makes even an outsider squirm. In the minds of most fans, the Buckeyes' other 11 games have already been neatly stacked in the team's win column, like so many nearly worthless rolls of pennies.

This certainly isn't America's team
Buckeyes aware of disdain after two title-game losses

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
It's hard to believe that anyone would have the nerve to approach a 6-foot-8, 312-pound man/mountain and say anything negative, but Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone says it happens all the time. "They always bring up the bad memories," Boone said. "Some people are nice, but a lot of times it's like, 'What was it like to lose to LSU or Florida?' and you're like, 'Really, dude?' "
And if that's the sentiment on his own campus, imagine how the rest of the nation feels.
ESPN.com reporter Mark Schlabach imagined it recently, when he declared Ohio State was the nation's "most-hated" program, based mostly on the Buckeyes having lost the past two national championship games.
"You know what? Good, because I hate America," Boone said.
Hello, Homeland Security Department?
"Just kidding, that was a joke," he added.

I realize that this point has been made many times over on this board recently, but I think it's worth repeating...

This so-called disdain for the Bucks is rooted mainly in the jealousy that people ("haters") feel because of our relative success thus far during the Jim Tressel era, as opposed to negative feelings / resignation (of fans and supporters) rooted in JT's teams' failure to take it all the way in either of the last two seasons.

If anything, being the "hapless" team in sports is sometimes an endearing quality... no offesne here, but just look at the Packers, the White Sox, etc.

The disdain is going to be there no matter what JT's teams do, so long as they continue to reload and contend, year-in, year-out.

EDIT: You can put in the name of any number of teams after the word "hapless", so don't get caught up in my two particular top-of-my-mind choices.
