The overwhelming favorite pulls up and finishes last for no apparent reason. The long shot wins. Kind of sounds like the race was fixed.

For two weeks we've seen people associated with that horse with strained grins on their faces: "Big Brown is fine. He's fine."

Big Brown: "My hoof hurts."

Handlers: "He's fine. No problem. He'll run with no problems. His hoof is fine."

Big Brown: "My hoof still hurts."

Handlers: "Natural healing. He's fine. He's great. No problem. We'll put a patch on it. He'll run fine."

Big Brown: "Well, my hoof still hurts."

Handlers: "Time to run. He'll be fine. He'll be great. No problem."

Big Brown: "My hoof hurts. Screw you. I'm pulling up."

Smart horse.

Maybe it's my perception of mob influence... but wonder how much money the mob made for this horse to not finish in the money... huge?

Now, the flip side... if this jockey did this... truly with the horse in mind and possibly very influenced by that filly that had to be put down... then I commend him immensely... I saw the clip of this horse a number of hours before the race, and he was freaking out in his stall vs normally he's very calm

Still wonder about mob influence

Conversely, how much did they stand to gain from breeding fees with a triple crown winner?

Breeding fees were already in place before the race . $50 Million

There was a bonus if he won the last race...

Also, the licensing, merchandising, endorsements, etc would have been much more.

This is the 11th time since the last Triple Crown winner (31 years ago) that a horse has won the first two legs and failed to win the third. Horses don't typically run three stakes races in five weeks, much less a mile-and-a-half in the third leg. It's no accident so many horses come up short at Belmont.

Then again, it could be the mob.

Karma is a bitch, eh Dutrow? That guy was such a prick throughout this whole thing I'm almost glad BB didn't win the triple crown just becuase it means Dutrow doesn't get it.

It was awful at the race. I was on the rail just before the 1/8th pole and we lost sight of the pack as they were coming for home and BB was in 3rd. When they reapeard D'atara (Sp?) was out in front and there was no BB! The crowd was dead silent (except for maybe the 3 lucky people that had the 6 horse). I was like oh shit, he's hurt. Then about 10 seconds later he came hobling by us. When he came by he looked pissed. He was throwing his head around like crazy. I watched the race on DVR today and it looks like the horse didn't want to run. The mofia has nothing to do with it. When Desormeaux pushed the button the horse didn't go. It's plain as day on the replay. I think he was in a bad mood to start (freaking out in his stall way before the race) and when he slipped coming out and then got boxed in going to the first turn he just said fuck it.

I'm looking forward to seeing him race Curlin at the end of the year (assuming he's OK and races out the rest of the year).

It's possible that they set up D'atara to run like shit going into this race to get his odds up knowing he had great pedigree for the distance, but that kind of stuff happens all the time and I don't consider that "a fix"
