Meet Information

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The men's cross country team begins its 2008 season at the Kent State short course open Friday in Kent, Ohio, where the Buckeyes have claimed the title the last three seasons.

This season will look to be one of the final steps in head coach Robert Gary's vision to claim a Big Ten title for Ohio State for the first time since 1923.

"We just met for the first time as a team Monday, so we will work out very hard Tuesday and/or Wednesday to see where we are at for the Kent State meet," Gary said. "Our biggest focus is training right now and the Griak will be our first real test at the end of September. Despite redshirting a lot of our runners, the goals of this program are always to qualify for the national meet and place in the Top 3 at the Big Ten championships."

One of his goals since becoming head cross country coach 12 seasons ago was to win a Big Ten title. After a strong third-place finish in 2007, Gary is continuing to build toward that goal with some of the top recruits in Ohio in conjunction with a team atmosphere.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a few weeks off, the Ohio State men's cross country team was back in action at the Roy Griak Invitational at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Ohio State flew north to Minnesota to race a strong field in the 8K Men's Gold Race that consisted of five teams who are currently ranked within the Top 30 teams in the country and finished 13th in a field of 25 teams.

Leading the field were the men from Adams State University, who placed first overall as a team with an average team time of 24 minutes and 38 seconds. Buckeyes finish second overall among Division I teams; check back Saturday morning for photos from Friday's meet

DELAWARE, Ohio
-- Led by Skyler Schmitt, the Ohio State men's cross country team placed second among Division I teams Friday afternoon at the All-Ohio Championships on a picture-perfect afternoon in Delaware, Ohio.

As a team Ohio State was second overall among D-I teams with 64 points, finishing behind Cincinnati who was first with 50. The Buckeyes posted their strong finish despite resting several of their top runners such as Taylor Williams and Christopher Olinger from previous meets in preparation for next week's NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.

"I was very happy with the team and the times from this year," head coach Robert Gary said. "Even while resting out Top 4 from Griak Invitational, we had a number of guys run personal bests on this very difficult course. I am very excited to see how these guys run at the pre-nationals next weekend."

Bolded part in Gary's quote above my emphasis. Ohio State still finished 3rd overall without their top 4 runners.

Ohio State Individual Results:
3. Skyler Schmitt (25:46.7)
8. Brian Gallagher (25:58.7)
15. Taylor Candella (26:19.2)
17. Andrew Arnio (26:24.2)
21. Levi Fox (26:32.7)
(28.) Donald Hanigosky (26:55.0)

There were 43 Ohio colleges represented in the Men's race with 42 of them having 5+ runners for team scoring. I believe the only school not at the meet was Miami University. The All-Ohio meet is scored twice: Once overall regardless of division and once for each division. Most NAIA schools are included in the D-II scoring. If you are semi-interested in distance running and ever get the chance to watch this meet... do it. Ohio is one of the only states to put on a meet of this type where all schools, regardless of division and talent, run in one race. It a pretty cool race to watch.

Men's Top 10 Overall
1. Malone - NAIA - 68
2. Cincinnati - Div I - 84

Freshman Taylor Williams leads the Buckeyes with a 44th-place finish

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After not having their top four runners at the All-Ohio meet last Friday, the Buckeyes were back to full strength at the Pre-NCAA Invitational meet in Terre Haute Ind.

They placed 21st as a team out of 41 total teams in the men's 8K Blue Race, which included 14 of the nation's Top 30 cross-country teams.

I hope they do well, like win, at the Big 10 championships. However, it will be very difficult to breathe the air up in that territory:!
It would be a MAJOR upset if they won the Big 10 Championships. Wisconsin will dominate as usual... The last time they did NOT win the Big 10 was in 1998. I think the skunk bears can give the Badgers a run for their money (pun intended) but Wisconsin's depth will put them over the top. I see the Buckeyes finishing towards the bottom of the pack this year (hopefully I'm wrong). My prediction:

1. Wisconsin
2. Michigan
3. Minnesota
4. Michigan State
5. Penn State
6. Indiana
7. Ohio State
8. Iowa
9. Illinois
10. Purdue

The Bucks are a very young team this year. They only have 2 seniors with one of them being Jeff See who isn't running XC this year... here's the class breakdown (numbers include redshirts):
Senior - 2 on official roster, 1 not running
Junior - 4
Sophomore - 5
Freshman - 7
Total - 18

I have remembered in past years that Wisconsin always seems to do pretty well in cross country. Do you have any idea why that is or is it just because they have a very good coach and it is pretty scenic out there to take a long jaunt:wink2:

Hopefully with Gray running the entire program we can at least start to slide up to the top half of the Big 10.

Wisconsin is a distance running dynasty... 41 Big10 team titles. The only decade they did not win a Big10 championship was the 1960's. Interestingly enough the only Big10 titles Iowa has is from 1961-1966. Ohio State's only title was in 1923... that's tied for last with Northwestern who no longer has a team. :(

I'm not exactly sure why or how Wisconsin has been so dominant for so long. I believe a lot of it is there is an immense amount of distance talent in that part of the country... the Wisconsin D-III schools are usually challenging for the national title at that level also. Coaching, home grown talent, and success breeds success would be my guess... a lot like Ohio State football.
