Having spoke with a Scout insider who talks frequently with UM insiders, I can tell you that the UM insiders are more than slightly concerned about things right now.
Wad, we're concerned but it's not that bad.
Darryl Stonum (#1 WR in Texas, Top100 player) is going to go public this Sunday to UM and Sam McGuffie is going to be in-town visiting and might pull the trigger for UM as well. UM also just got a verbal from one of the five kids they offered at camp, in-state OL Rocko Khoury. Khoury isn't a world-beater, but he's got good size and athletic ability, the kid did run a 4.16 shuttle at 6'6, 282 pounds at a recent NIKE combine this spring. I think down the road the kid could make a great center, especially in the zone scheme where you usually see more nimble lineman at center.
UM insiders knew that UM was slipping for Blanton for awhile, and many insiniuated that UM had moved on and were focusing their attention on his teammate Spencer Adams.
Hunter visited UM the same day that Mike Martin committed and they play the same position. I think his committment to ND was more or less him thinking "OK, Michigan is stacked at tackle, I go there I might not play, I go to Notre Dame I start from day one".
UM hasn't lost Koger yet and they were in touch with him as of yesterday. They've far from fallen off the map for him. Could he end up at OSU? Yeah, obviously considering they are the only other school he is considering and he hasn't made his mind up yet. I want Koger, but at the same time he wants to play TE and I can see him not being too thrilled with UM considering UM got two TE's in '07 and Brandon Moore in '08.
Jonas Gray literally just got a UM offer and that kid has changed his favorites as much or more than any other kid I've seen since I've been following recruiting. First it was Notre Dame, then he almost committed to Florida, then it was Minnesota, then it was Michigan and he was dying for an offer, then he's completey open with no favorites, and now it's MSU and Nebraska? Outside of Michigan (who supposedly offered him as an ATH only after they saw him rip off a 4.37-40) and Florida (who has offered literally EVERYBODY) does this kid even have an impressive offer that you'd expect from a Top 50 player (which he's not) like Rivals has him ranked. There was talk that he was offered as an ATH, not a RB, and quite frankly I'd like to see him at UM because he's an in-stater with sub 4.4-40 speed, but as long as we land McGuffie I could honestly careless. It's not like UM has really been after this kid, they haven't even been recruiting him up until a few days ago.
MSU pulling even with Michigan for Fred Smith just
might have something to do with Darryl Stonum committing to Michigan, Fred's best friend already committed to MSU, and Michigan taking three receivers in the 2007 class. Smith wants to play early, he's made that known and odds are he has a better shot doing that at MSU. Still, UM has Mom in there corner and Fred has been a priority for them and they've showed him alot of love. This one ain't over, and the fact that he didn't commit after such a great visit means that said visit will have time to wear off and UM will still work him.
UM is still in very good position for Christian Wilson. I've never heard of nor seen a kid just visit and hang-out with the team for the entire week of camp but not participate at all. They usually just stay for a day or a session and leave, but Wilson was there the entire time and hamming it up with the team and '08 commits. Michigan is very much in it for Wilson, he's just not ready to end it IMO. Things could very well take a turn, but right now I'm not that worried.
The entire "Baldwin meltdown" came about on the Scout Michigan board, where frequent contributor and WPA "insider" Gene Hankerson aka Gene23 stated that ND was in Baldwin's Top 2 with UM, not that Baldwin liked UM any less or that he was now a ND lock. I don't get why UM fans went into total meltdown. Did people honestly think this kids Top 2 was going to stay Michigan-Pitt? Did people honestly think he would wind up at Pitt? Pitt almost never lands WPIAL kids like Baldwin. Michigan is still in the Top 2 for him, and UM has the most fickle fan base in the country. They don't think we are going to land anybody and the only way they feel confident that UM even has a shot is if the kid says he grew up dying to play for UM or comes right out and says UM is my favorite.
I wish they were more like Buckeye fans and just assume that every kid was coming, because it gets very annoying to read end of the world rants and we can't recruit for crap suicide watch threads.
