Re: More DE's off the board!

Maybe we should start a thread also titled "More O and D linemen off the board" next? Wonder if we'll see the entire offense as slot receivers and the entire defense as safeties?

Re: More DE's off the board!

Don't get me started. I'm really trying to hold out hope, but we knew coming into this season that DE was our most pressing need, even moreso than QB IMO. If we sign more WRs and no solid DEs I'm going to wonder whether the WVUers were right about him signing all skill players and shuffling off the practice losers to play defense.

Prove me right RRod! I don't want to agree with those clowns.

Re: More DE's off the board!

You can go back and dig up old posts I made before RR was hired expressing concern over his defensive abilities. I fear he really doesn't care about defense, so far, it's fairly disappointing on that side of the ball and falling right into my fears. I'm not AS concerned with the OL as we did land 6 in the 2008 class but what about DE and DT? Come on now. You can't win in the Big 10 without a defense, especially against the run.

Not to second guess RR... but wuts with all the 3-star recruits? Seems like we are getting only the leftovers from all this southern emphsis on recruiting. I hope that once we start winning, we'll start pulling in some big name recruits.

I read a thread on GBW where several(more like most) of the posters are getting worried about their DE/defensive recruiting. There was one poster that listed every DE Michigan has offered or is heavily recruiting...one...one of the 7-8 listed had Michigan in the top 3. In fact the poster acknowledged that Michigan was not even being considered anymore by 4 of these recruits. He also mentioned Carradine and admitted that unless tank gets his grades up it won't matter anyways.

There is another thread about their overall recruiting. Some of the posters are seeing more and more recruits trimming their lists dropping Michigan or committing somewhere else..."its becoming a daily occurance". One posters admitted this is the risk of neglecting your home state and region and selling out to southern recruitng/regions you don't normally recruit. Michigan is known for the OOS recruiting but their bread and butter has always been the midwest recruiting complemented with OOS recruiting. Neglecting their state and region is starting to nip them in the ass!! their fans are starting to see what we have been talking about...their starting to wake up.

Banish the thought, my confused friend. You're putting the cart before the ass here, because RR's ability to develop Big Ten AA caliber players is anything but established...

Instead, you should be hoping and praying that if you start pulling in some big name recruits, you might start (or have a shot at getting back to) winning!

Yeah, but we have a pretty good idea what Big East bastketball is all about, and their *take* on football isn't all that dissimilar.

OL Andrew Carter commits to Illinois
The excitement in Andrew Carter's voice made it clear just how big the moment really was.

Carter, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound offensive lineman at Leon High, jumped at the chance to explain why he decided Wednesday evening to commit to play football at the University of Illinois.
"I love everything about Champaign and the University of Illinois," Carter said. "It's a great fit for me.
"I'm pumped for it," he added. "I'm ready to get going now."
Carter will first have to play his senior season at Leon, which now has three Division I commitments on its roster. Receiver James Green (South Florida) and linebacker C.J. Mizell (Florida State) previously announced their college choices. A fourth top prospect, quarterback Austin Dantin, is also expected to sign a Division I scholarship.

Carter chose Illinois over a handful of top programs, including Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, South Carolina and others. He toured the Illinois campus two weeks ago. While there, he met with Illini head coach Ron Zook and offensive line coach Eric Wolford

"Coach Wolford and Coach Zook are amazing people," Carter said. "The football team is on the rise. I'll get a chance to contribute early and it's a beautiful campus."

...

"He's a great kid and he's going to be a giant," Ragans said. "He's got great feet. He's a big kid who can really move. He's got a lot of up-end potential. He's got size 16 feet and a flat stomach and he already weighs 270 pounds. He'll be 295 before too long. Plus he's really coming into his own in the weight room."
UM was thought to be right in it, perhaps just behind Florida State, but with a solid shot.

A little more perspective on UM line recruiting as per Scout:

UM has offered two OGs. Both committed elsewhere.

UM has offered ten OTs. Five are uncommitted (including Hall). Four committed elsewhere. One (three star Michael Schofield who ranks 8th among the ten offered) has committed to UM.

UM has offered seven DEs. Four are uncommitted. Two committed elsewhere. The lowest ranked of those offered (three star DeQuinta Jones) committed to UM.

UM has offered four DTs. Three have committed elsewhere. But it is here UM has their sole recruiting coup on the line - five star William Campbell.

Campbell committed six months before Lloyd lost his job.

Jwins is right about that kid growing into a DT. Another thing that needs to be brought up is that LSU is supposedly close to offering this kid. From all sources the kid is supposedly all LSU if they extend an offer.

Hey they always have Kevin Koger they can move to defensive end...Oh wait they promised him a spot at TE:wink2:

6'3" WR Willie Haulstead chose FSU over Auburn & SCar in the spring. UM says they need a big wr, and he's interested in visiting them and others.

He's not another slot dot, but with very few spots left, is he a smart target with big needs at DE & elsewhere? I'm also curious if this is a backup plan if McNeal gets away or if they want him either way. Maybe he's that good.

Also, UM is not exactly hurting for big WRs. Butler, Soph Clemons, Soph Hemingway, Soph Mathews, HS Sr McNeal are all physical specimens. They may want him for the future, but I'd say they have plenty of big specimens already.

I want to apologize for my biased representation of UM recruiting.

I neglected to point out that UM has offered 17 slot receivers and 12 undersized running backs.

All committed enthusiastically.
