QB race starts at spring game

COLUMBUS - The waiting is finally near the end for Todd Boeckman.
All those days spent holding a clipboard while standing on the sideline as somebody else played and got better - those are in the past as Boeckman tries to strengthen his grip on the starting quarterback job at Ohio State.
"It's real tough to go out there and get maybe a couple of reps a day. It's tough, thinking, 'Oh, I wish I was on the field,' " Boeckman said Tuesday after one of the Buckeyes' last practices heading into Saturday's annual spring game. "But I knew the situation coming in and I knew I had to bide my time. Now I hopefully can run with this opportunity."
So far, so good for the fourth-year junior as he tries to replace Troy Smith, last year's Heisman Trophy winner. Boeckman is listed as No. 1 at the position on the depth chart. Third-year sophomore Rob Schoenhoft and redshirt freshman Antonio Henton also are in the running.

Unless Henton goes on a tear during the fall and starts to play like a seasoned veteran, I don't think he is going to start in any games. This kid has tremendous potential though and can really throw darts. Sophomore year is when he is really going to get some looks at QB.

Schoenhoft has a cannon for an arm, excellent mobility, and doesn't make too many bad decisions out there, but he still needs to work on accuracy and getting a feel for the QB position, which means developing some intangibles. If Boeckman somehow doesn't satisfy the coaches, I don't they will hesitate to put him in the game.

Todd Boeckman is a veteran and can throw some good balls. The thing that worries me about him is his mobility. I don't think his mobility is any better than the Michigan QBs. Otherwise I would say that he's the clear favorite right now.

Yeah, and I have a feeling that there will be a few more people sitting in those previous empty "QB Discussion" lecture halls after a game or two.

Especially if Henton looks sharp in a mop up role.

All you have to do is hand off to CW without fumbling and not throw INTs and the job is yours. I don't think it's going to get very complicated this year.

yes, lord knows reading the defense for possible passing game isnt something QB's have to worry in this day and age.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: -- I myself prefer the hand off to tailback approach.

It has been stated frequently by people wiser than me that the biggest difference between OSU and YSU (and OSU and Akron) will be in the quality of the bench.

So as the benches empty, it seems natural that the popularity of the backup QBs will only be enhanced as they will be going up against opponents that are more over-matched.

Something tells me that Tressel has ways of evaluating QB talent and getting the right guy on the field though. ...just a hunch.

The point isn't whether Tressel can evaluate the best QB. It's whether or not we (the Buckeye Nation) will second guess his decision. And from that standpoint, I would bet all of my vCash and some of my actual folding money on us being armchair head coaches before game three.

1. Too many opportunities for the offense to stall under Boeckman.
2. Too many opportunities for Henton or Schoenhoft to look good against scrubs.
3. Too many fans for them all to agree on one quarterback.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that fans will be looking for Tressel's head on a platter, but some of us will be second-guessing his judgment.

Tressel is perfect.

I'll blame Bollman.
