I looked up patience in the dictionary and found a picture of jwinslow's avatar.

That does not answer my question, as it only addresses (at most) half of what I asked. My question is why do we have so few scholarships available this year and next relative to everyone else in the Big Ten (and almost every other big-time program for that matter). The reference to the Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class basically just confirmed that we do, in fact, have few scholarships this year and next. It still does not answer the question of why just about every other school has more. I'm not trying to be difficult here, but rather I'm just trying to understand how we went wrong. Can someone please answer?

Wow...little pushy there, huh pal?

Look at the class of 2003...you have several players who either left school or were dismissed (Guilford, Frost, Irizarry, Cotton, Hiley, Maupin), you have a couple who left early for the NFL (Youboty and Whitner last year, Gonzo this year) and you have one who was unable to continue his career (Jordan). Those spots get filled as those players leave...so you always have 85 on scholarship (which includes the couple of walk-ons that are awarded schollies each year). Now when you get to when those kids should be graduating (barring redshirts like Barton, Smith, Boeckman, Lukens) you have very few seniors graduating (or juniors leaving early). Very few seniors graduating means very few shollies to being with. It is the staff's job to get the classes back in more balance, which they are trying to do by not taking as many as they could this year...but when you have an especially bad class like that one, it is tough. The class of 2004 had similar problems (Hoobler, Haw, Skeete and Welch leaving, Pettrey grayshirting, Kennedy not getting in, Bauserman going to play baseball). That leaves us with 6 seniors leaving after next season.

Does that satisfy your questions?

Thanks for answering. That helps. For the record, I wasn't trying to be pushy or difficult; rather, I was just trying to understand what went wrong (as I said in my previous post). I just thought it was a little dismissive for someone to tersely post a link in response to my original question, and then have several others unnecessarily chime in, "You should get an award for patience, huh, huh."

Just kidding with ya...

But you be honest, you know where I got all the info in my post...in that link. Mili does a great job of including the "losses" at the bottom, which helps explain why there is so gew graduating seniors this year and next.

I know the losses made a difference. But I was also wondering if tOSU redshirts more guys than other teams or at least is redshirting more than in the past. Having 40 or so guys on the roster who redshirted makes a big difference in the number of guys you can take each year.

Really? I'd say it directly addresses why we don't have scholarships next year.

The juniors (rs & true) are hogging the schollies. Only 6 schollies are opened by graduation next year.

26 + 16 + 15 + 15 = 72

85 - 72 = 13

Now as for why others have more... who are these other teams who magically have more scholarships? Those scholarships have to be departing somehow (non qualifiers, transfers, leave team, etc). OSU typically brings in 18-20 kids, this two year stretch is due to a breakdown in balance in 03-04... as seen on that chart.

SEC teams: They constantly oversign, expecting non qualifiers and will ask some kids to grayshirt if they have too few spots.

Unionfutura has touched on SEC tactics in other threads, where schollies are on a yearly basis and they sometimes get shown the door if they're not producing... by different means (ie not providing tutor help).

From GBW:
-------------
SEC: 27+32+25+31+30+23+25+24+27+34+28+14(Vandy)= 26.58 LOI average (27.73 minus Vandy)

Big 10: 20+15+20+21+22+17+21+19+22+19+19 = 19.55 LOI average
-------------

For schools that don't operate expecting heavy attrition (both before and after enrollment), you also have to see whether they are bringing in jucos in past classes.

Bingo... the combination of re-allocating 2003's schollies and the Florida-like 2004 class is why we have so few schollies to give.

Their gigantic classes look nice on signing day, but if they all qualify, it can be problematic down the road.

Great work Josh...

Look at USC...they only signed 18 this year when they had 30 offers to give...reason being that if everyone stayed 4 years, they would have 23 offers to give in 2008 but only 9 offers available in 2009. They will obviously do their best to balance things out between now and 2009, but if they were to follow that up with a class like OSU's class in 2003, they would be in trouble as well. Obviously that isn't likely to happen, but every one in a while you have a disasterous class, like OSU's 2003 recruiting haul.

BG $

2/9

Great read by Brandon Castel...talks about why OSU's class of 15 is just as impressive as UF's 27 signees or Tennessee's 30 signees. The article really talks about the numbers game.

I think what he was getting around to providing for you was the entire picture with one click, as opposed to 4-5 sentences as an answer to one or 2 questions, which would only beg 2 more questions. They take pride in this website around here, which if one is so inclined could navigate with even a few too many beers, and still be able to find the answer they are seeking. I love this place, it almost explains itself by the way the information is broken down. They just grow impatient from time-to-time with getting the same lazy "i know where to find it, but if you could just re-post it..." questions. I'm not jumping, I'm just hoping you look back on what has already been hashed out next time for your answers. It's why you can still find the information.

Thanks schwab...

I am going to rename this thread 2007 OSU recruiting for the regulars since that is what it dealt with almost entirely. I am going to start a new one the pertains to 2008.
