No matter which Cavalier guarded him, the Spurs' Tony Parker found a way to get the job done on the way to 27 points and seven assists in Game 1.

SAN ANTONIO -- For Cleveland point guard Larry Hughes, a severe foot injury is the worst ailment a player can have while trying to stay in front of Tony Parker.
For rookie Daniel Gibson, facing a point guard with as much championship experience as Parker is a bad mismatch.
And for LeBron James, expending tons of energy trying to defend Parker is hurting his offense.
So what's a team to do?
"Well, I'm going to pray a little bit," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said yesterday. "That's the first thing."

SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs forward Robert Horry said he hid in the corner during media days while with the Houston Rockets and hoped Hakeem Olajuwon did most of the talking.

Teammate Tim Duncan said the first experience of going for an NBA title can be "overwhelming."
And Spurs guard Michael Finley said Game 1 felt like an All-Star Game with the incredible amount of hoopla.
Welcome to your first NBA Finals, Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rob Oller commentary: One-horse show won't cut it for Cavs in NBA Finals

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Cleveland Cavaliers better brush up on their ancestral heritage if they hope to save face in the NBA Finals.

A quick look at the Cavs' family tree shows the team nickname was formed in part on the "one for all, and all for one" philosophy set forth in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.
The Cavs have the "one for all" part down pat. His name is LeBron James, the one who is expected to do it all.
It's the "all for one" portion that needs work. If the Cavs can't find a way to win without relying solely on James, then expect the San Antonio Spurs to sweep the series.

Hughes to put best foot forward

Until he's told to give way to Gibson, Cavs' injured guard intends to keep doing job

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

SAN ANTONIO - Larry Hughes has heard enough.
Perhaps reacting to some criticism and calls for Cavaliers rookie guard Daniel Gibson to replace him in the starting lineup following San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker's dominating performance in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Hughes laid down the gauntlet.
If the Cavaliers coaching staff and his teammates feel like he can't get the job done on his wounded foot, then tell him and he'll take a seat. Otherwise, Hughes said, let him do his job.

Wise Guy: LeBron James relaxed on eve of Game 2

TOM WITHERS

SAN ANTONIO - Tony Parker, Tony Soprano. One's going to get hacked, the other might get whacked.
At roughly the same time the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs take the floor for Game 2 of the NBA finals on Sunday night, the final episode of "The Sopranos," HBO's series about a dysfunctional New Jersey mafia family, will air.
So what's a TV viewer to do? Lobs or mobs?
"I'll be more focused on Tony Parker," Cavaliers star LeBron James said, "even though I am a fan of Tony Soprano."
James had better be locked in following a nightmarish performance in his - and Cleveland's - finals debut, when he went 4-of-16 from the field, scored just 14 points and had six turnovers in an 85-76 loss to the Spurs.

I didn't see anything the other day to make me believe that SA won't win at home again tonight. If they do win I can see a real peril to the Cavs chances. The Cavs would just about have to win the first game at home or they will probably be dog food.

Hughes thinks he's healthy enough to help Cavs

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

SAN ANTONIO Larry Hughes is not giving up on making an impact in the NBA Finals.

The Cavaliers guard certainly was no factor in Game 1. Hughes scored just 2 points in 23 minutes during Thursday's 85-76 loss to San Antonio.

Hughes remains far from 100 percent after partially tearing the heel muscle in his left foot against Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals. Moments after Thursday's NBA Finals Game 1 ended, there was speculation as to whether Head Coach Mike Brown should consider a lineup change involving Hughes and rookie guard Daniel Gibson.

While understanding the situation, Hughes still hopes to be on the court for as long as he can.

"If it's better to have someone else in the lineup that guarantees us a win, then I'm all for it," Hughes said. "If not, I definitely want to get my shot and help the team out the best way I can."
