2007 Heisman Trophy Discussion

Made the same point about Alex Smith pages ago!

Maybe I mistook the flavor of your post, but it seemed to me you argued the opposite - that Alex Smith did receive Heisman consideration despite being labeled a "system" quarterback. I am arguing that Smith finishing 6th in the vote with those numbers and that team success was not legitimate consideration. And, there was no similar comparative basis upon which to label Smith as a system guy at that point in Meyer's coaching career.

Alex had 29 and 22..... I did not know that.

No, but Alex did average half a yard more per carry, he just had some running backs that Coach Meyer allowed to score rushing TDs.

Besides, if total TDs scored is the most important criterion, then Colt Brennan should have automatically won the award last year considering he had 58 total TDs, passing & rushing, before their bowl game (& 5 more after their bowl game). That's more than half a TD more per game than Tebow this season, right?

I would have sent Dixon over Daniel. A shame he got hurt. :(

Agreed. It's unfortunate that an injury may have taken both his team and personal achievements away.

Alex Smith had similar numbers to Tim Tebow in his second year under Urban Meyer, and despite his team having a better year, and being ranked higher in every poll, Alex Smith did not finish in the top 5 vote getters for the Heisman Trophy. So it would be at least as fair not to have Tebow in the top 3 if an Alex Smith didn't finish in the top 5.

Actually, Alex Smith finished 4th in the Heisman voting in 2004, his second year under Urban Meyer at Utah.

Heisman Trophy balloting
Player.....................1st...2nd...3rd..Total
Matt Leinart, USC..........267...211...102..1,325
Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma..154...180...175....997
Jason White, Oklahoma......171...149...146....957
Alex Smith, Utah............98...112...117....635
Reggie Bush, USC...........118....80....83....597

Thanks for the correction. I confused it with Colt Brennan's finish in last year's Heisman race.

Remember when some media people had Boeckman on their lists? Ugh he fell by the wayside.
I think Tebow will win, but his rush TD's are overblown. How many of those were <1 yd in, and how many would go to RB's in any other system? Is Meyer afraid of handing off to backs?

Which would be borderline criminal... I wish him luck in the bcs, but he's had about 3 ugly outings despite a hideous schedule...

And despite that and missing three games due to injury, he's still the best passing QB in the country. This is going to be one of those instances where they recognize the career, and not the the performance of the current season. I think "borderline criminal" is a tad strong for giving the award to the all-time TD leader in the history of college football. Everyone talks about Tebow and his "51 TDs". Brennan had 63 TDs last season, and has 46 this year.

Tebow's rushing TDs this season:

1 yd (WKU)
3 yd (Troy)
16 yd (Troy) note this TD was scored with 2:50 left in the game and already up 52-31
7 yd (Tenn)
5 yd (Tenn)
9 yd (Miss)
6 yd (Miss)
2 yd (Aub)
9 yd (LSU)
2 yd (UK)
2 yd (UGA)
3 yd (UGA)
1 yd (Van)
1 yd (Van)
5 yd (USC) that's South Carolina, not Southern California
1 yd (USC)
3 yd (USC)
2 yd (USC)
5 yd (USC)
2 yd (FAU)
23 yd (FSU)
5 yd (FSU)

Only 2 of his 22 rushing TDs went for dougle-digit yardage (including one in garbage time when he had no business being on the field other than padding his stats), and 12 TDs were from 3 yards or less.

Might be unfair. As unfair an opinion as leaving Tim off the top three picks. I mean, it's his perfect right and all, but to ignore Tim totally on the vote is so - well - weird - that my natural take would be to look for reasons to explain it, and that is all I can come up with.

As to him being buds with Chirs...link? I mean, not doubting you, but I've never seen that. And as you may have gathered, I've got on my Orange and Blue shades on this one. I admit it.

I don't know if I can provide a link but after the NC game they went down to Florida to do one of those skill challenges and they were hanging out together plus Troy has said he's friends with Leak. I'll post a quote if I can find one.

The fans' view of Florida differs greatly from the actual team. We're the ones who are hostile towards the Gators. The players and coaches have mostly shown respect for them.

I don't agree with Troy not having Tebow in the top 3 but I'm willing to bet for whatever reason that is, it isn't because he's still mad about the NC game. He's a class act all the way.

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan owns or shares 29 NCAA records, including the career touchdown mark of 131.

HONOLULU -- Moments after rallying Hawaii from 14 points down in the final four minutes to beat San Jose State in overtime, Colt Brennan stood before his mud-covered teammates in the middle of Spartan Stadium and delivered a passionate message.
"We kept saying 'believe,' " Brennan hollered. "Believe the rest of the year and we will go undefeated. This is what it's all about. Every one of you guys, I love you."
Brennan's bold prediction, captured by television cameras, was made in mid-October. Two months later, having led the Warriors to a perfect regular season, Brennan is a Heisman Trophy finalist.
"I was just saying what I felt," he said this week. "It just came out, and sure enough we believed the rest of the season, and here we are."

Thanks. That is Intersting, any QB could have scored most of those, but their teams don't use their QB as a battering ram like that. He is a great player, but the 20/20 TD stat is not as amazing as people say it is.
