UNC, Ohio St. to meet again

By Dan Wiederer
Staff writer

College basketball heavyweights North Carolina and Ohio State will once again square off in the first month of the season next fall when the Tar Heels travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the signature game of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
With 11 games on the docket the week after Thanksgiving, UNC and Ohio State will meet Nov. 28 at Value City Arena in a rematch of last year?s Challenge blockbuster ? a 98-89 Carolina win at the Smith Center.
The Tar Heels, who figure to start the season ranked in the top 5 if not at No. 1, will get an early look at an Ohio State team that made it to the national championship game this month, though at this moment it is uncertain whether Buckeyes stars Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. will still be around. Both players are projected to be NBA lottery picks if they choose to enter this year?s draft.

Northwestern at Virginia??

I'm actually fairly insulted here.

This looks like an ACC blowout. UNC kept all their best players. If OSU gets hit hard by departures, UNC will have a veteran team. BC will destroy an overmatched young Michigan squad. Northwestern has zero chance - zero - in the JPJA against Virginia. Minnesota's awful and will get smoked against FSU. Maryland's too good for Illinois, especially in College Park. VT loses a huge senior class, but they have enough quality returning players to take care of Penn State.

Wisconsin and Purdue should handle Duke and Clemson, but those are the only games the Big Ten should be favored in. GT-IU and NC State-MSU are probably the best games in terms of an even match, unless OSU returns their NBA hopefuls.

I'm very surprised by all the love given to Sidney Lowe's ball club. I'll take the Spartans hands down in the matchup.

If Oden leaves, Ohio State will face a serious matchup problem with Hansborough, especially with Koufos needing to take time getting acclimated.

Northwestern loses every year, so at least we get to sacrifice them to a top half team.

IU will be just as talented as GT, and has a far better coach.

And I like Minny against FSU. Tubby Smith could coach a high school team to the NCAA tournament. (and he pretty much did the last two years).

It is a little early to do full breakdowns of these games, but just give some initial thoughts...I would love for us to finally win one of these, and the Big Ten will be much improved next year, so I think we could win it next year...

Wake Forest at Iowa

- Pretty boring matchup, should be intersting to see if Lickliter can turn Iowa into a decent game...
Georgia Tech at Indiana

- This should be a real good game if Young and Crittenton return, but at the moment it looks like Young will be gone. I think IU has the edge here.

Minnesota at Florida State

- Have no idea what FSU has, but Minny has everyone returning from their putrid team this year, and Tubby as the coach...

Northwestern at Virginia

- Probably a pretty easy victory for Virginia...

Wisconsin at Duke

- Dook with another home game in this thing.:! Neither team will be that strong next year...

Purdue at Clemson

- SHould be a pretty good matchup with all the newcomers for Purdue...

NC. State at Michigan State

- Should be an easy matchup for MSU being at home and all the talent they will have next year...

Illinois at Maryland

- No idea what Maryland has coming back, but Illinois will be fairly decent next year...Might be a decent matchup...

Boston College at Michigan

- BC will wipe the court with scUM at the Breslin center...

North Carolina at Ohio State

- Gotta go with the Bucks, but it should be a good matchup and the Scott will be rockin'...

Virginia Tech at Penn State

- Va Tech should win this one easily...

in the acc/big ten challenge or just in general?

I meant in the Challenge but after looking at it they have played 2 home games next year makes 3, played 2 away games and the other ones were at neutral sites, 2 in Greensboro(right down the road) and 2 in Chicago, in big ten country, so really they have had 5 basic home games to 4 away...But they never seem to have to go play at another teams home court, only 2 out of 9 times...

i asked because i've already had this discussion. disregarding their ninth game (because we don't know anything about the tenth), the placement of the game sites has been rather fair. yes, duke has had to play 2 away games at venues that weren't home courts for the big ten teams. if i remember correctly, one was against illinois in chicago and the other was against iowa in chicago. chicago is just over an hour from champaign. iowa had to travel over three hours for their game. while it may seem mildly unfair, one should instead be upset with delaney for not forcing the iowa game to be played in iowa city.

anyway, i don't think that court locations have made that much of a difference. duke went into east lansing one year to play a spartan team that was ranked one spot off (5 vs. 6)... and beat msu by 22. duke is undefeated in challenge play because they've simply been better. oddly, unc is 3-5 in challenge play.

I'd easily put DJ White and Eric Gordon up with Crittendon and Young, and probably put them above - added in with the fact that Young probably won't even be there. And there's no question in my mind that Kelvin Sampson is a better coach than Paul Hewitt. The coaching matchup isn't close.

Don't doubt scUM next year. First-year coaches tend to have success, and Beilein has experience coaching less talented players.

I'd love, just for once, to smack that smug look off of ACC fans. There isn't one school in that league, outside of Virginia Tech, that I don't hate.

North Carolina Travels to Columbus in 2007 Big Ten/ACC Challenge

Ninth Annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge Matchups Set; ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU to Televise All 11 Games

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Matchups for the ninth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge have been determined with the event featuring top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner's Cup on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Ohio State will take on North Carolina in Columbus Nov. 28 on ESPN this year.

Ohio State will be participating in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the sixth-consecutive year. Ohio State first participated in the event during the 2002-03 season against Duke in Greensboro, N.C., a 91-75 Blue Devils' victory. Georgia Tech traveled to Ohio State in 2004 and won 73-53. The Buckeyes traveled to Clemson in 2004-05 and fell to the Tigers, 80-73. Ohio State defeated Virginia Tech in Columbus in the 2005 event, 69-59, for its first victory in the Challenge. The Buckeyes met North Carolina in the 2006 event. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 7 at the time in the Associated Press Poll, defeated the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes in Chapel Hill, 98-89.
For the third-consecutive year, the event will feature 11 games (an increase from nine in the six previous years) from 11 different college campuses and include two telecasts on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network. ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise the remaining nine games. The event this year will be played on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26-28).

If you mean that court locations don't mean much for Dook in this thing I can agree, but overall I think court locations is a big determining factor in some of the games that are closely matched...
