2007 ACC/Big Ten Challenge (official thread)

If Oden leaves, Ohio State will face a serious matchup problem with Hansborough, especially with Koufos needing to take time getting acclimated.

Hopefully now that we're at home the refs won't swallow their wistles and let Hansbrough travel all game.

I don't think Hansborough will necessarily be that much of a factor - Koufos will not match up against TH which will probably free him up to play help defense and go after his shots. We will have Hunter, Twigs, Madsen and, if necessary EW and DL to throw bodies at TH, so I think he can be neutralized.

If Conley leaves, Tywon Lawson is the real matchup problem. No one but Conley is as fast as he is. Hopefully Lighty or Turner can use their height advantages to neutralize his speed.

Why? When is the last time Virginia made it out of the second round?
Roughly about the last time Northwestern even had a winning record. And, I might add, they've never made the tournament.

But what does that have to do with anything? UVA shared the ACC regular season crown with UNC. Northwestern shared the Big Ten toilet with Penn State. I was hoping for an even matchup. Indiana, maybe? Michigan State? Wisconsin? We've got unfinished business with MSU because the last time the two teams played, the game was called because of the slippery floor.

- BC will wipe the court with scUM at the Breslin center...
At the what? :tongue2:

Tar Heels freshman Wright to enter draft

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) ? Brandan Wright enjoyed playing for Roy Williams and knew North Carolina could contend for a national championship next season. He just couldn't pass on the chance to take care of his family by entering the NBA draft.
"I was definitely torn in my decision," the freshman said Monday during a news conference. "There are so many positives and negatives in me entering the draft. But I feel like the positives outweigh the negatives."

Monday, Nov 26

7:00 p.m. ESPN2 Wake Forest at Iowa

- Really haven?t been able to get a read on either team. I do think that Wake has more talent, but the fact that the game is in Iowa could help? Will know more after Iowa play Bradley Friday night.

Pick: Iowa (1-0)

Tuesday, Nov. 27

7:00 p.m. ESPN Georgia Tech at Indiana

- I think this one could get ugly. While Ga Tech will be coming off a win over Notre Dame they have losses already on the early season to Winthrop and UNCGreensboro. With this game being in Indiana, I see this being a double digit point game.

Pick: Indiana (2-0)

7:30 p.m. ESPN2 Minnesota at Florida State

- I really think that Minny could surprise some people this year. They have
everyone back, and Tubby is a solid coach. FSU has 2 losses on the season and will probably have 3 as they have an upcoming game with Florida. They lost to South Florida and Cleveland St. I am going to go with Minny in this game.

Pick: Minny (3-0)

7:00 p.m. ESPNU Northwestern at Virginia

- This will be ugly...The best thing for the big ten is that they have the worse team on the road against a middle of the road ACC team.

Pick: UVA (3-1)

9:00 p.m. ESPN Wisconsin at Duke

- I really like this matchup. I thought Illinois played Dook very tough besides for a couple stretches where they just struggled with their guard play. The toughest part of this matchup for Wisky is that the game is at Cameron Indoor. Wisky should be able to dominate the inside and have some solid leadership with Butch and Flowers, but I am going to go with Dook with this game being in durahm.

Pick: Dook (3-2)

9:30 p.m. ESPN2 Purdue at Clemson

- Another matchup that I like. Clemson just moved into the top 25 this week at number 24. They play alot of people and the game is in Clemson. This would be a huge game for the big ten to steal and Purdue does have the talent to steal this game, and this is a game where Purdue's lack of bigs will not hurt them that much. They are very athletic and I expect to see lots of points in this game. Still going to go with Clemson, but do think this will be a great game.

Pick: Clemson (3-3)

Wednesday, Nov. 28

7:00 p.m. ESPN N.C. State at Michigan State

- Should be an easy game MSU at the Izzodome. NC State has one of the best frosh in the country in JJ hickson, but he is not going to be enough in this game. Should be a double digit win for MSU.

Pick: MSU (4-3)

7:30 p.m. ESPN2 Illinois at Maryland

- I would love it if this game was at Ill. I think these two team present an evenly matched game. I really liked what Illinois showed against Dook other than their ability at guard, but I think Dook exposed that with their ability to keep throwing guys at Ill. This is a game that Ill is very capable of taking but I will go with Maryland due to it being in college park.

Pick: Maryland (4-4)

7:00 p.m. ESPNU Boston College at Michigan

- Don't really think that BC has as good of a team as they have had in the past couple years, but Michigan isn't going to present much of test to them. I see a win for BC here.

Pick: BC (4-5)

9:00 p.m. ESPN North Carolina at Ohio State

- I really like this early season test especially after the NIT. We are really getting tested early on. We have the talent to stay in this game, and we even present them some mismatches, with KK stepping outside, and we have the athletes to guard UNC. The thing is they are too deep and while I am hoping we can stay in this game and pull it out, I think it ends up a 10 point or so win for UNC.

Pick: UNC (4-6)

9:30 p.m. ESPN2 Virginia Tech at Penn State

- I really feel that PSU is going to pull this one out...Va Tech lost most of their team from last year and this game is at PSU, and they have their team back from last year. Va Tech struggled with Elon the other night, and only have 1 game under their belt right now...PSU will have a solid test against South Carolina tomm. night.

Pick: PSU (5-6)

That would put us on the losing end once again, but I really don't see any reason why one or two of Illinois, Purdue, Wisky, or us couldnt pull our games out. It would also be reasonable for Va Tech, Wake or FSU to win...

Either way it seems that we are matched up pretty well this year and would love to see us finally win this thing...

Well, isn't the Big Ten already down 1-0 with Duke blowing out the Illini last night?

Really, the only solid picks for the Big Ten are Indiana and ... (chirp chirp). Every other team could go down.

For the ACC, go ahead and pencil in Duke, Virginia and North Carolina as winners. Duke looked really strong last night. The only teams that will beat Duke are teams that have a significant advantage athletically. That's not Wisconsin. And I'm sorry, but Ohio State simply is not ready to compete against Carolina. Hansborough will own Koufos if KK can't man-up down low.

Man these are some pretty strong statments...I think MSU has the much better team than NC State...

Also not sure you can just pencil in Dook...Yes they are a very solid team, and will be a home, but Illinois was dominating the game down low with rebounding and easy buckets, and if you want the best team in the front court in the big ten you would look at Wisky...and with Flowers and Hughes in the backcourt they have some athletes...Not ready to mark that one up...

Also I will never right the Buckeyes at home off against anyone, not even if it is UNC...I said it will probably be a ten point win, but UNC struggled the other night with Davidson and I would like to think we are on par with Davidson and if we shoot the ball well from the outside we can stay with anyone in the country...

I agree they are the "better" team and I would pick the Spartans, but I wouldn't write it down in stone. Izzo-coached teams have had a tendency lately to play up and down to their opponents.

Duke has about 28 players on their bench that can shoot the 3 ball.

While that maybe true they are in the Izzodome and I think they will start to play like a vetran team, like they are and the young frosh will continue to improve...

But NC state is not a team that is going to pose a big threat to them...

Wake Forest at Iowa Pick: Iowa (1-0) My pick is Wake Forest (0-1)

Georgia Tech at Indiana Pick: Indiana (2-0)
My pick is Indiana (1-1)

Minnesota at Florida State Pick: Minny (3-0)
FSU has way more talent, but Leonard Hamilton is a horrible bench coach. Tough to pick this one, but I like Tubby; the Goophers (2-1)

Northwestern at Virginia Pick: UVA (3-1)
I agree. (2-2)

Wisconsin at Duke Pick: Dook (3-2)
I agree. (2-3)

Purdue at Clemson Pick: Clemson (3-3)
I'm actually going to go with the Boilers (3-3)

N.C. State at Michigan State Pick: MSU (4-3)
I agree. (4-3)

Illinois at Maryland Pick: Maryland (4-4)
I agree. But I'll take it another step and say this game could be played in Chicago, Champaign-Urbana, or on the planet Venus and the Terps would still stomp the Illini, who are in for a long year IMO. (4-4)

Boston College at Michigan Pick: BC (4-5)
I agree. (4-5)

North Carolina at Ohio State Pick: UNC (4-6)
I agree. (4-6) This one could get ugly IMO.

Virginia Tech at Penn State Pick: PSU (5-6)
I wouldn't pick the Nits to beat Otterbein. VaTech. (4-7)

...it seems that we are matched up pretty well this year ...
Well, we disagree on the matchup thing, but this is not a good year (at least early) for a very young Big Ten conference. I'd probably pick differently if these games were to be played in February.

Good post!
