COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team posted solid numbers in the Zips Open Friday night in Akron, Ohio, in its final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships.

"We had a great tune-up weekend going into the conference meet next weekend," Ohio State head coach Robert Gary said.

The Buckeyes were led Friday by season-best performances by weight throwers Lenny Jatsek and David Ebersole. Jatsek won the event with a toss of 69 feet, 9.75 inches, which is an NCAA provisional toss and the eighth best mark in the nation. Jatsek's toss also is the top toss in the Big Ten this season. Ebersole hit a NCAA provisional length with a toss of 67 feet, 7 inches. Ebersole toss is third in the Big Ten this season and 11th nationally.

Also in the field, Kyle Burns took the top spot in the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet, 7.5 inches. On the track, Chad Balyo won the mile in a season-best time of 4:09.61. The Buckeyes had the top three collegiate finishers in the 3,000-meter run as Adam Green took second in a time of 8:24.27, Alex Bailey third (8:24.63) and Christopher Olinger fourth (8:28.82).

Anthony Cole won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80 and Aaron Johnson took third in a time of 6.94. Brian Hartline made his debut with the Ohio State track team, taking second in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.19. Jonathan Francois took third in a time of 8.31.

"We are starting to really come together, led by our weight throwers Lenny Jatsek (seventh in the country) and David Ebersole (11th)," Gary said. "Both hurdlers, including Brian Hartline, look like they can make finals at the conference next week. Our 4x400 ran 3:12 by themselves, Kyle Burns had some great attempts at 17'1" in the pole vault and Chad Balyo had a strong mile by himself."

Men?s T&F: Ohio State Opens Action at Big Ten Championships - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

At the start of the day the team was in 6th, but as the article mentioned, a lot of people in the finals plus throws team looked great in warm-ups yesterday (like 70+ ft good in the weight) so a lot of points hopefully from there. Got a bit unlucky with the pole vault and shot yesterday, but it happens. No surprise with Hartline, though I've been told to watch out for a sub 8.00 run...it's doable if his start is solid. Wisky is running away with it (literally), but the team feels 2nd or 3rd is a legit goal.

OSU roundup: See wins mile, Buckeyes place third in Big Ten indoor track

Monday, March 3, 2008 7:04 AM

Led by Jeff See's win in the mile, the Ohio State men's track team finished third in the Big Ten indoor track and field championships in Madison, Wis.
OSU capped its effort with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Matt Comer, Curtis Leuenbrerger, Elon Simms and Stephen Robinson finished in 3 minutes, 13.22 seconds.

The men's program took a huge step to jump into the 3rd position.
Gary feels the team is even better outdoors (possible additions of football players and star sprinters Stuart Smith and Aaron Roberts getting back on track). He is doing a heck of a job and I wish the University would build a real indoor facility for them.

What on earth is happening with the women's program?

Will they combine again if it keeps going like this?

I agree... it is great to see Gary and this team succeeding... and a little earlier than I thought too. :)

It's in the works... some plans are calling for a new indoor facility to be built next to Jesse Owens Stadium, others call for an entire renovation of the French Field House (I'd prefer a new state-of-the-art building but I'm a track guy, not a budget guy).

It would be a mistake to combine the programs again, hopefully the AD office sees that. The big issue is keeping Ohio talent in-state... all the great female athletes leave for greener pastures. OSU needs someone who can persuade those girls to be the building blocks of a program.

Day Two Results

COLUMBUS, Ohio
- The Ohio State men's track and field team completed action in Madison, Wis., in the 2008 Big Ten Championships Sunday. The Buckeyes finished third with 82 points. Defending national champion Wisconsin won the team title with 127 points.

The third-place finish by the team marks the second time in the last 10 championships that the Buckeyes have finished in the Top 3. The third-place finish is the best for the Buckeyes since finishing third in 2001. With the cross country third-place finish at Big Ten's this season, it marks the first time since the 1928-29 season that both the indoor track team and the cross country team have been in the Top 3 at their respective conference meets.

Junior Jeff See claimed the third Big Ten title of his career Sunday as he won the mile for the second-consecutive season. With the win See becomes the first Buckeye to win back-to-back conference crowns in the mile. See won the event in the in a time of 4:22.21. With his win in the mile and second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run, See scored 18 points in the championships by himself for the Buckeyes, making a strong case for Athlete of the Championships which will be named later this week.

I too am surprised how quickly things have turned around, but again, the new leadership must be unbelievably refreshing to anyone and everyone involved with the program. I think it is also commendable that Gary has assessed the conference and made the wise decision to really focus on the sprints and throws, instead of turning into a distance school which is usually the case with young distance-background head coaches.

Looking forward to following Nationals and outdoors including "The Dual" with Michigan April 5th at JOMS.

I hope the state of the women's program doesn't delay an indoor facility. I also hope a change is made with the women's program before the rumored 8 year contract is completed. Things are getting worse there.

NCAA Championships Information

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The NCAA released its national championship qualifiers on Monday and four members of the men's track and field team will be making the trip to Fayetteville, Ark., this Friday and Saturday for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

Senior Anthony Cole will be making his second-consecutive trip to the championships in the 200-meter dash. Cole earned his spot with his time last weekend at the Alex Wilson Last Chance meet in South Bend, Ind. The time for Cole was a season-best of 21.07 and is the 13th-best among athletes competing in the championships. Last season Cole missed the finals of the 200-meter dash. Cole is the only Big Ten sprinter in the field.

Junior Jeff See also will be making his second-consecutive appearance in the championships in the mile run. See is the back-to-back Big Ten indoor champion in the mile and is the only Ohio State miler to earn consecutive Big Ten mile titles. The Middletown, Ohio, native earned his spot in the championships with his time of 4:00.05 at the Meyo Invitational Feb. 9. The time is the second-best in Ohio State history, the seventh-best among athletes competing and the best time among provisional qualifiers. See will be the only competitor from the Big Ten and the time also is the 12th-best time by an American in the indoor mile this year on an oversized track.

Senior Lenny Jatsek will be competing in his second NCAA championships after posting an NCAA automatic qualifier mark at the Big Ten championships with a toss of 70 feet, 6 1/2 inches (21.50 meters). The toss is seventh-best among competing athletes. Jatsek first attended the NCAA championships in 2006 as a sophomore, also in the weight throw. In his NCAA championship appearance in 2006, Jatsek earned All-American honors. The Walton Hills, Ohio, native also has earned three-consecutive All-Big Ten honors in the weight throw, including consecutive Big Ten championships in 2006-07.

Senior David Ebersole will be making his first career NCAA championships appearance after posting a NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Alex Wilson Last Chance meet of 68 feet, 1 inch (20.75 meters) in the weight throw. The toss is 14th-best among athletes competing in the event. With Ebersole making the championships the Buckeyes will have two athletes in the weight throw and be the only school in the country with two competitors in the event.

I don't think that the women's program would delay building that facility, especially if the men's team continues to improve. If anything a new facility would help attract some female athletes to tOSU.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team representatives completed action Saturday at the 2008 NCAA Championships with seniors David Ebersole and Lenny Jatsek in the weight throw and Jeff See in the mile.

See became the first Ohio State miler to earn All-American honors since Rob Meyers in 2003. See took seventh in the NCAA mile final with a time of 4:05.75. See earned a spot in the final with a time of 4:06.10 in the prelims inside Tyson Fieldhouse. Among non-seniors See was fourth and looks to carry this momentum into the outdoor season. While redshirting the outdoor season in 2007, See set the school record in the outdoor mile with a time of 3:58.70.

Jatsek grabbed 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 68 feet, 1 3/4 inches. With the toss, Jatsek earns All-American honors for the second time in his career. He was also a All-American in the weight throw in 2006. Ebersole took 12th in the weight to close out his collegiate indoor career. Ohio State was the only school to have two throwers in the event.

"I know the guys are disappointed," Ohio State head coach Robert Gary said. "But it really is a great honor just to make it. It really is impressive how tough it is to qualify. All of our guys ran or threw near their season bests and with Jeff and Lenny earning all-american honors".

The Buckeyes will take a week off and then out their outdoor season in Coral Gables, Fla., with Miami Conference Triangular.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State track and field program had three members named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American teams on Sunday.

Junior Jeff See earned the first All-American honor of his career with his seventh-place finish in the mile Saturday. just heard about the festivities surrounding the dual with michigan next saturday. band, cheerleaders, varsity athletes from other sports will be there. jt will be doing the starting gun for either the 4x100 or 4x400 (can't remember right now). there will be a cookout for the team and the track alumni after...sounds like it should be a really fun atmosphere. also, they are getting some sick uniforms next year that only a handful of schools have. pretty exciting stuff for the team no doubt!

There is no doubt that Gary is moving the men's program along big-time(especially with events like this and cross country reunion/hosting Big 10's in the fall). He has some great energy and certiainly bleeds scarlet and gray.

I disagree with his focus on Ohio because I think OSU track should recruit much more nationally and even internationally, but I'll give him credit towards really building something solid.

Can you imagine if OSU got EVERY great Ohio high schooler? I guess that it what he is working towards.

May need some help from football to stay top 3 outdoors though!

Hartline Happy to be Back on Track

Buckeyes receiver working on speed
By MATT MARKEY - BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS - It's more than five months until the start of football season, but Brian Hartline is spending his time trying to run away from people. The Ohio State wide receiver is putting his speed to work back on the track this spring.

Hartline, who will be a red-shirt junior for the football team in the fall, had not participated in track since the spring of 2005, when he won state championships in both hurdle events as a senior at Canton GlenOak. It's been all football since then for the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Hartline.
"I'm competitive, and when I walked away from track, I did miss it," said Hartline ...
