Men's team draws from home crowd

The Ohio State men's track and field team competed in front of a home crowd Friday and Saturday for the second time this season. Despite cold wind and rain, there was an impressive turnout at the Jesse Owens Classic and the stands were full of cheering fans.

"There were a lot more people here than last year," junior Matt Comer said. "I think that it helps a lot with team performance."

Comer ran the men's 400-meter dash and finished seventh with a time of 47.71 seconds, followed closely by sophomore teammate Stephen Robinson, who finished eighth with a time of 47.79. Comer and Robinson were both members of the winning 1,600-meter relay team. The 1,600 relay was the last event of the meet.

Freshman Bryan Bunnell claims Big Ten title in the javelin throw

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team completed action at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign Ill., finishing in third place with 100 points. This marks only the second time in Ohio State history that the men's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams have finished in the Top 3 at their respective championships. The last time the Buckeyes accomplished the feat was 1941.

"I could not be happier," head coach Robert Gary said after the meet. "We vowed as a program last year to be in the Top 3 all three seasons (cross country, indoors and outdoors) and we really stuck with it. We had a balanced team effort in all the areas and just kept fighting. We lose a couple great seniors, but we have some great recruits being added. Most importantly, we have done a great job improving the overall culture of the program whereby we are a united team (all event areas) and are committed towards positioning ourselves to win a big ten title."

The biggest event of the day for the Buckeyes was the javelin throw as Ohio State swept the top two spots. Freshman Bryan Bunnell made his case for Big Ten freshman of the year, dominating the event with a winning toss of 219 feet, 1 inch. Patrick Filipi finished second with a toss of 216-11. The two Buckeyes bested the field by 6 feet, 3 inches.

Good article on the NCAA's website... this was posted before the Big Ten Championships... the Bucks were able to accomplish the feat of finishing in the top 3 for all 3 seasons (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track). Congrats to Robert, his athletes, and his assistant coaches!

Creating A Culture Of Champions

Last fall, the Ohio State men's cross country team placed third as hosts of the 2008 Big Ten Championships (Oct. 28), noting the team's fourth Top 3 finish in its last six tries. The men's track and field team followed suit with its own third-place finish at the conference indoor championships March 2 in Madison, Wis.

This weekend, Robert Gary, Ohio State men?s cross country and track and field head coach, looks to complete the challenge of securing Top 3 finishes at all three Big Ten championships in a single season at the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.

If Gary's squad of veteran sprinters, distance runners and throwers can win points in each of the events, the Buckeyes will record a feat that the Ohio State program hasn't achieved since 1941.

"The mantra of this season is earning Top 3 finishes at the Big Ten cross country, indoor and outdoor championships," Gary, a former Buckeye and two-time Olympian, said. "It's an accomplishment an Ohio State team has not reached for more than 60 years."

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team collected Big Ten postseason awards following the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill. Six Buckeyes took home All-Big Ten honors, including two on the first team and four on the second.

"I am very proud of our individual award winners," head coach Robert Gary said. "Our program really has learned to work towards many goals as a team. But it is very nice to recognize some of the individual awards as well. They are very deserving of these honors."

David Ebersole, a former walk-on, won the Big Ten championship in the hammer throw last weekend and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors with his mark of 211 feet, 8 inches. The honor is the first of his career. The Cleveland, Ohio, native won the award by besting the field by 2 feet, 6 3/4 inches. The toss ranks 22nd in the nation and ninth in the Mideast region. The toss also was a facility record for the Illinois Soccer and Track and Field facility.

Ohio State's men's cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams each finished in the Top 3 at their respective Big Ten Championship meets this season. COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State men's track and field team finished competition at the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

 Sophomore Jeff See earned a trip to the NCAA championships in two weeks with his third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. See came in with a time of 3:48.05. He heads to the championships holding the best time posted by a Mideast regional athlete this season. See also holds the ninth-best time in the country this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior David Ebersole added another honor to his solid senior season. Thursday the Cleveland, Ohio, native was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team. The senior spouts a 3.85 grade-point-average in accounting. He moves onto the national ballot to try and earn Academic All-America honors.

The district honor is the first of Ebersole's career. However he has been one of the top academic student-athletes for the Buckeyes for several seasons. Last season Ebersole carried a GPA over 3.5. He's already been accepted to attend graduate school in order to gain his master's degree in accounting. In 2007 Ebersole was a nominee for Academic All-America.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jeff See, Ohio State's lone NCAA qualifier, was in action on day two of the NCAA Championship in Des Monies, Iowa on the campus of Drake University.

See finished ninth in the preliminary round with a time of 3:42.51, coming in fifth in his prelim heat. See was fifth among underclassmen. See is one of the top mid-distance runners in the Big Ten since coming to Ohio State from Middletown High School in 2005 and is a four time All-Big Ten performer (three-time first team). See holds the school record in the outdoor mile and the second-best time in school history in the 1,500-meter run. He has three Big Ten titles to his named and earned All-American honors this year during the indoor season in the mile.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field had their final runner finish action on Saturday as Jeff See earned All-American honors in the 1,500-meter run.

See, a sophomore from Middletown, Ohio, took fifth in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championships to earn his second All-American honor of 2008. See finished in a time of 3:43.13. See earned his first All-America honor during the indoor season in the mile. See still has more work to do, however, as he will look to make the Olympic team at the end of the month at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
