2006 Running Backs Discussion

my only question for you is, what was it you expected beanie to show to this point that he hasn't? personally i thought he had completely lived up to his hype and more. im really curious to hear a negative, or atleast less positive review of his performance to date.

I know this isn't directed towards me, but the only negative I have against Beannie is fumbling in the red zone against NIU. That is forgivable though as he is a freshman (and will make some freshman mistakes) and that was his first game in front of 105,000+ rabid fans. Other than that I think he has looked good and has shown flashes of his potential greatness.

if you have that you should hate eddie george for losing 3 fumbles against Illinois inside there 20 yard line and OSU losing the game. Thats why his freshman year was bad for him.

I even hate to say that about him. He was by far the nicest person I ever got to know from the team including my friends. I told them they should take his human studies classes. :)

Where did I say anything about "hating" Beannie? I just pointed out that his fumble the only large mistake I've seen him make, gave him a pass for it and praised him for what he's done good. Every player will make some sort of mistake this season no matter if we want them to or not... Pittman will fumble the ball, Troy will throw an interception, etc. so I'm not holding Beannie's mistake against him.

Check Pit's Thread. I suggested it and everyone thought i was crazy.......

What are you CRAZY!?!?

No, with the right set of circumstances I could see it happening. With 2 good backs behind him and a retooled O, his number are more than likely to drop next season. A good season this year might be better for him in the draft. Time will tell.

There are a lot of quality backs this year: Peterson, Bush, Lynch, Irons, Darby, Hunt, Hart etc. There may be less rb depth in the 08 draft, but I'm not that familiar with those youngsters.

Will Chris end up stealing that many carries from Pittman next year? OSU will definitely run the ball more next year with a stronger defense and young QB.

If CWells is stealing Pittman's carries next year, I think scouts would realize that losing carries to a promising back like Chris is not an insult. I don't think Pittman will be drafted as a #1 RB in the NFL. Most teams use a running back by committee system these days.

OK, say we are fortunate enough to win the NC this season AND Pittman rushes for 1300-1500 yards again ... does he go pro? I'm actually surprised that no one is considering this possibility.

I'd say right now that it's a 60% yes, 40% no type of situation. If Pitt has a great season, he'd probably want to consider it. Beanie will continue to get more carries into next season, and this may be Pitt's best chance to shine.....getting a heavy chunk of the carries.

This is really going to depend on where Pitt might go in the draft. Looking across the football landscape right now, some (all?) of the best and most productive backs are Sophs and Juniors (Petersen, Snoop Stewart, Slaton, Hart, Pittman). Garrett Wolfe obviously leads the Seniors. If Pittman were to come out, I think that there's every reason to expect that he'd be one of the first five backs picked, in which case he goes. Running backs love to go early if they can, because they take such a beating. At one point, the number people pointed to was eight years as a starter in the league and you're done. Depending on injuries and durability, that can be six years or less. If you can skip one year of college ball, that's worth millions.

Having seen what we've seen this year, he's a second rounder at worst right now, IMO.

As far as the Wells vs. Pittman argument, I think we don't have one. :) At this moment, Pittman is turning out to be better than almost anyone expected. He's really grown as a back, and made progress every year, unlike some other guys we had. I can remember the arguments back a few years ago on that site which shall not be named, about RB development or lack thereof. A lot of those chicken little claims can be laid to rest now.

It's also a good idea to bring Beanie along gradually, without putting too much pressure on him. He's going to be a great one, that's for sure. Five to ten reps a game is enough to get him some meaningful time, plus it keeps Pittman well-rested. As mentioned, I want to see how he looks blocking and picking up blitzes. I'm also encouraged to see him being worked into the passing game.

If Pittman does leave early, I'd expect Mo Wells to split carries with Beanie next year. He's making some good progress, and I think that he's going to be a much bigger part of the offense down the road. Smaller stature backs have been successful in the Big Ten in recent years, so I don't buy into the argument that you've got to be a 240 pound bruiser to get it done in this league. He showed some strength in the Cincy game, and he's going to be even stronger a year from now. I like the potential of what he can do.

If they win a NC, with CW behind him and with Troy leaving I would be gone in a heartbeat. A 3 year player that gained 1300+ yards in a season will make a lot of money in the NFL.

First round? Who knows. But he will be a very rich young man. Case in point the other other Wells, Johnathan Wells.

I dont think he will unless he can go high first round :oh:

A whole lot of good points in here now. If Pittman gets 1400 yards this year and stays why would JT take carries away from a premium back. I sure wouldn't no matter how good anyone is. I agree C. Wells is going to be a bruiser. I might run the ball more to get Wells more carries but I wouldnt take any away from Pitt. Heck with those two we could go back to "3 yards and a cloud of dust":)
I think the remark about going in the top 5 RB's is right on for him to turn pro. And I agree that he would be crazy not too. Right now I think he is ranked about 15th in the nation so he would have to improve that and with all the quality backs around he may not get into the top 5 assuming that they all have decent or "as expected" years

How's this: Until the Minnesota game last year I didn't feel like the Bucks had a running game.... was it the line? was it the RBs? was it the coaching? I didn't know, but it was the third year in a row from the home of the running back and I was tired of it. It cuased me to overlook what Pittman did from there on out. I was stunned at the end of the year to see that he'd managed more than 1300 yards... then he couldn't go in spring training and I saw CW.

I couldn't see how you could keep that talent out of the line up. But Pittman started earning his right to be the starter in the middle of the Minnesota game last year and has, through his performance thus far this year, kept Wells on the bench.

Tressel is nothing if not loyal... just ask Steve Belisari... the spot is Pittman's he until fails to earn it. Wells would have to get in and really tear the place up to create any change in that. It's a great situation for the Buckeyes. They have a proven 1.3 K back and the opportunity to "season" a future All American. Nothin' wrong with that 'cept I'm gonna lose my virtual ass, and for that I blame no one but myself and certainly not Antonio.
