2006 Running Backs Discussion

Looks like I'm about to loose some serious v-bucks. I was sure Beanie would show more by this time. I thought that fumble at the NIU game would put him in the hole, but Tress has shown faith in him, he just hasn't been able to keep him in there very long... perhaps because he doesn't know the playbook... but that didn't stop MoC. If Beanie had shown the ability, he'd be starting. Right now he's still a season away. Damn!

What do you have against Pittman?

This could easily go in the Antonio Pittman thread but is a good argument why he is the main back right now (and will be for the season). Here's some stats comparing his first 3 games last year (Miami, Texas, San Diego St) to the first 3 games this year:

2005: 49 carries, 227 yards, 4.6 YPC, 0 TD's
2006: 52 carries, 343 yards, 6.6 YPC, 3 TD's
Difference: 3 carries, 116 yards, 3 TD's

IMO, his increased productivity early in the season is mainly attributed to two things:
1) Stronger than last year as evidenced by the number of defenders he has run over or carried for extra yardage
2) The passing offense is off the charts better now than at this time last year. Defenses have to defend against the pass first, run second.

And he makes people miss, which neither wells is very good at yet. Which is also a reason that he wont get less carries. He is just a better all-around back.

The season's here, and people are still looking at this the wrong way. It's not that Chris Wells is not as good as Clarett at the same point, as many people liked to say. Rather, it's that Antonio Pittman is way better than Lydell Ross, Maurice Hall, and JaJa Riley.

Clarett was sensational his freshman year. But he also made freshman mistakes and lacked durability - issues for any freshman back. I think the staff knows that with somebody like Antonio Pittman around, Chris Wells does not need to be pressed into situations where his lack of experience and durability become an issue.

What I hope happens is that the staff is saving Wells for the second half of the season. It's not that I think they're gonna be able to "surprise" anyone with Chris Wells - rather, it'd be nice to have a FRESH big back to pound on the worn out Big Ten defenses. If I remember correctly Branden Joe got the bulk of his carries late in the season, and I think he was effective because of that. Plus, by the end of the schedule, Chris Wells will be more experienced and more seasoned.

Check out the stats at the top of the board. Thats the reason that Beanie hasn't seen the field that much. Its not Beanie's shortcomings, its that Pitt is THAT GOOD. Beanie will get his turn, just so happens we already have a stud back ahead of him.

I think my views on Pittman got skewed by several things: 1) the state of the running game in 04. 2) the state of the offense in the first few games of 05 3) Beanie's showing in the spring game. Pittman ran extremely hard the last half of 05 and against ND. He also became a great outlet receiver, picked up his blocking assignments and showed premier back speed. He has certainly earned his starting position this year.

Slow down

If you read what Cinci has written (extensively) on this subject; you know he has nothing against our AP.

Well, he seems so disappointed that Chris didn't earn the starting spot and I don't understand why.

Slow down? I didn't know I was going fast in the first place.

Maybe he thinks Chris Wells IS that talented.

Also, maybe if you would have asked the individual what they meant instead of insinuated he had something against Pittman you wouldn't have gotten "slow down."

Now Pittman but, down the road WELLS in a second. He reminds me of a faster eddie george to a bo jackson type of player.
Pittman kinda reminds me of a bigger m. wiley to a smaller edgerrin james.
I've watched them both all through H.S. and backed up the OSU recruiting of PITTMAN. He was on all those going to state track relay teams at buchtel with his great football skills and that says a lot period. Everybody was like, why or who is he and look what he became. A STAR AT OSU
Wells .I started posting about him when he was a freshman in H.S. and he just blew me away.Someother site thought I had no clue talking about him when he was a freshman but, I still send them a nice ? ASKING THEM FOR SOME HELP.:)
I really thought he was the next lavar arrington his first 2 years playing . He looked so good as a RB but, HE looked like a superman at LB. His size/response/speed was all together ALREADY back then. I really thought he was 18 to 20 when he was a soph. I found out are mothers worked together and that was it for me. I knew he was going to be a buckeye before, he announced it. Look at some of my posts on his. I said , he's going to a buckeye a lot.

These 2 young men bring back greatness to being a RB at OSU

huh. personally i thought pitt was one of our handful of positives from the 05 texas game.

my only question for you is, what was it you expected beanie to show to this point that he hasn't? personally i thought he had completely lived up to his hype and more. im really curious to hear a negative, or atleast less positive review of his performance to date.

imo the only thing keeping beanie from starting is pitt. and i don't see that changing so long as pitt remains a buckeye. but imo beanie is every bit as ready to take on the starting position as moc was. i can't even say moc was a better blocker as i don't think i have seen beanie block in a game yet. holding his reviews on blocking from the spring game aren't fair at this point.
