2006 NFL Draft Order and #1 Pick Discussion (MERGED)

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2283797

It looks like the Texans will take Bush. Thank the Lord.

I feel bad for Bush. I would not like to have to go play in Houston, where its like 110 degrees everyday, and then get a weekly beating with no offensive line to protect you. I know people say "just go pick up some o-linemen in free agency" like it is the most simple thing in the world.

Haha maybe Bush pulls a Matt Leinart and stays for his senior season so he doesn't have to go to Houston.

Wow. You could not be farther off (Well, I just disagree... I could be wrong). First of all, even if it is 110 degrees every day in Houston (which it's not), they practice indoors. Houston showed major strides at the end of the season, and played everyone very closely (yes, even Indianapolis). I don't think that he'll stay, just because of the new signing bonus rule for rookies being enforced in 2007. That could be a huge reason why so many underclassmen have left this season.

As for Lendale White... it looks like he will be leaving, too.

If the Texans do indeed select Bush, I feel bad for him for an entirely different reason. He will be seen as the guy selected over hometown hero and Texas GOD Vince Young. The fans will be on him from day one. Any little mistake he would make, he will be relentlessly booed. I think Vince coming out backed Houston into a corner. If I was drafting for them, I would take Bush. I think Bush is a once in a generation type player. he can hurt you in so many ways. But I also think he may struggle unless the Texans make an effort to put a line in front of him. Texas showed that he is not invincible. Unfortunately he would go into Houston with a huge cloud over him. The fans and media down there aren't going to listen to reason that they have a pretty damn good QB in Carr already on the team, and that Bush is the smart choice. They want Vince, and thats it. Who can blame them though. As a fan, you want the hometown boy and conquering hero to play for your team. Its similar to the Cavs getting the #1 pick when LeBron was there. The difference is, there wasn't an equally talented player in LeBrons draft, and the Cavs didn't already have a good SF to build around. Tough break for Bush. I think he's a class act and an amazing football player, but he has the odds stacked against him if he goes to Houston.

I think that Texan fans would love to have Vince Young on their football team, but they probably also realize that they have a great prospect in David Carr. Most of the fans in Texas are very classy fans, and I would be shocked if they were against drafting Reggie Bush. They were the ones that were dying to draft him earlier in the season, and sure, Vince Young hadn't mentioned leaving for the NFL, yet, but I'm almost certain that the Texans know what they want. They should draft Reggie, and then trade Domanick Davis (if they feel that that is necessary), and stack up on offensive lineman. Although they have made some poor decisions with their organization, I believe that Bob McNair will do what he believes is best for the team and the fans of the Texans' organization.

I meant just living there in general, aside from practice, couldn't be that favorable. I'm not saying that it is really that bad to live there, (hell it could be worse, could you imagine getting drafted to New Orleans and having to deal with that?) but I mean just the fact that he would be the center of attention, and not much to protect him would make the start of his career very difficult. Plus, like NFBuck said, being chosen over the hometown-hero guy could add even more pressure than there already is.

This is true of "smart" football fans, but a majority of every fan base isn't quite that. Vince Young is a hero in Texas, and I can't imagine many casual Houston fans seeing the benefit of drafting Bush over VY after Vinces' Superman impersonation in the Rose Bowl. I think he'll be fine wherever he ends up, there will just be some growing pains in Houston until he hits his stride...especially if VY ends up a Titan.
