2006 NFL Draft Order and #1 Pick Discussion (MERGED)

:wink2:
Well, right now I'd put DDavis in the top 5 RB in the league, and before you fly off the handle, think about it for a second.

DDavis has played forty games in the NFL... and has amassed 4371 yards of offense, almost 110 total yards a game. He's also averaged 32 receiving YPG in that time. Consider what he's been surrounded by, and it's a big accomplishment.

Does anyone believe Reggie Bush can do better for 16 games in the NFL than what DDavis could do in a full season (extrapolating the stats, it's 1784 yards of total offense) with the Texans? I surely don't. Will he fill seats? If he does manage to put up numbers comparable to Davis, maybe. What about when they get the same results and they still don't win 6 games and David Carr gets pounded into the turf for another year? David Carr will be 27 next year, how long will he be able to stand? I don't think the Texans will pack the stadium with Tony Banks at the helm.

They've been going backwards, Seth Payne's their best defensive lineman. Jaime Sharper is gone. Aaron Glenn is gone. Chester Pitts is protecting David Carr's blind side (68 sacks of Carr this year), how can anyone say it's a GOOD idea to draft this guy? How well can he chip defensive ends? I wonder if he could double as a DE/LB? It's akin to the Packers drafting Aaron Rodgers last year. "Where's the one spot we don't need to improve? RB... let's get one of those!"

I will, however, buy into the 'Domanick Davis is a little injury prone' argument. He missed 5 games this year with a knee problem that persisted all year, but all it took was arthroscopic surgery to fix.

Also, I am a believer in 'there's two spots in sports you can never have enough good players, that's starting pitching in baseball and running backs in football.'

You prove a great point there, but the thing is the fans that are so demoralized about their team. If they draft Reggie, then they improve their attendance, drastically. It will be interseting to see this situation unfold. However, I think AJ Hawk definitely improved his draft stock tonight... Maybe the Texans would take a bite at him. :)
Unfortunately, I don't see that happening, lol. Anyways, you guys are right. The Texans really do need offensive linemen, but they'll have a really high 2nd round pick, and many other draft spots.

Exactly. They need to get the fans back into it. My friends in Houston said that the whole Houston community is absolutely distraught over the situation that the Texans were in. Reggie Bush is one of the most amazing backs I've ever seen perform at the college football level. Yes, he may have exceptional talent around him, but he is definitely a great player with extraordinary talent, and to top it off is a very modest guy, which should keep him out of trouble. Believe me, there are many offensive linemen that the Texans can draft, but there is only one Reggie Bush.

Yes, well trust me, having the Texans turn into a competitive team and rise their level of play all around will fill the seats up more than the weekly david carr/reggie bush punching bag show. It would be a shame to see Bush go to a team like the texans, and then not be able to fufill his potential because he got stuck on a team with a sorry offensive line, and every play he has the chance to be hurt because the whole house will be coming down on him. I say put him somewhere where he can succeed, and the Texans get quality help at 4-5 positions. They can draft down to get Ferguson, and then get some other players (other linemen possibly, or help on defense), and then some other draft picks to add depth to their team.

Trust me, no one wants to see Bush's career go down the drain because some trigger-happy GM wanted to make a fast buck. As Al Michaels once said, "If you start to listen to the fans too much, pretty soon you'll find yourself sitting next to them."

Raiders win coin flip over 49ers in draft

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - The Oakland Raiders won a coin flip over their cross-bay rivals in San Francisco for the sixth pick in April's draft, leaving the 49ers, in contention most of the season for No. 1, with the seventh choice.

Also...

First-round draft order

The complete order for the April 29-30 draft was announced Monday, with Houston at No. 1, presumably with the rights to Reggie Bush, the Southern California running back who is expected to declare his eligibility after Wednesday's Rose Bowl. The Texans (2-14) officially fired coach Dom Capers on Monday as New Orleans (3-13), which will have the second pick, did with Jim Haslett.

After the Saints come a group of 4-12 teams: Tennessee, the New York Jets and Green Bay, followed by Oakland and San Francisco.

After seven, the rest of the order among non-playoff teams is Buffalo, Detroit, Arizona, St. Louis, Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Minnesota, Dallas, San Diego, and Kansas City.

The order among the playoff teams is subject to change, depending on how teams do in the postseason, although no team can fall below other teams with the same regular-season record unless it advances to the Super Bowl. The winner of that game would have the 32nd and last pick, the loser would pick 31st.

Thus New England and Washington (both 10-6) are Nos. 21 and 22. If the Patriots advance and the Redskins don't, Washington would move up one spot, but New England could not fall below 22nd.

The order among the 11-5 teams starts with Carolina at No. 23, followed by Tampa Bay, Chicago, Cincinnati, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh.

Jacksonville, the only 12-4 team, is 29th, followed by Seattle and Denver (13-3) and Indianapolis (14-2).

The draft order is determined by weakness of schedule in the case of ties in the standings, and head-to-head games have no bearing.

Back to the Texans, Well... hmmm... is there any reason not to have them both (Davis and Bush) on the field at the same time?

A lot?

One goog way to get Carr sacked less is to run the ball more.:wink2:

Obviously that doesn't solve all their problems... but... you have to take Reggie Bush.

Fuck trading down unless you get someone's whole draft... There are going to be FA OL's available.... grab a couple and go... they aren't going to go to the Superbowl in one year... You can't do shit without talent. Go hard or go home.

I'm not saying the Browns are any good, but they were able to sign enough FA OL to make them a decent running team this year. Houston can probably do the same. Draft Bush, keep Davis and use them both. Bush can also line up at WR to get them both on the field. If someone offers the Texans a trade that would give them an extra second round pick this year and a first round pick next year while still being able to draft Ferguson this year they would have to go for it.

If you're comparing the Giants line and the Texans line, you are sorely mistaken.

That Texans line gave up more sacks than any team in history.

I'm just saying that if the Giants can go from one of the worst lines in the NFL to a 4 seed in the playoffs line without drafting any OL the Texans can sign enough FA's to be better next year. If they focus on run blockers they should be good enough that they can run the ball and make Carr not have to pass as much. It is hard to find offensive linemen that that are good at pass pro and run blocking. It's a little easier if you only need them to be good at run blocking. The Texans are more than a year away from doing anything so they might as well take the best player available and worry about the other holes later.

I just figured the Texans would want to better protect their costly investment (Carr) before investing in another costly investment that may flounder.(Bush)

I don't think Bush gets you more than 2 or 3 more wins next year at MOST.
