2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

Does that means he slides to #2? If so that is BS.

From the same link:

No. 1 -- Troy Smith
Each week, Smith puts more room between himself and the competition. As long as Ohio State keeps winning, Smith will remain the top pick on most voters' ballots. His decision making and big-play ability can't be overstated, and he continues to make the highlight-reel plays Heisman voters crave

This page will be updated each Monday.

If your refering to just the
As long as Ohio State keeps winning, Smith will remain the top pick on most voters' ballots
statement, they said the same thing last year about Vince Young on that ballet. It also has a history of dropping votes off for bad preformances, even if they win, like when Quinn had a bad day against GT.
The only thing that updates is the circle thing next to the players name and the text. The positions don't move till monday. and the votes.

To me, under pressure from a defense Troy runs circles around Brady Quinn. Pressure on Brady and he drops, pressure on Troy and he usually does something although today Illinois had his number. It just makes me sick the media hype Notre Dame has and Brady. Yes, he is a good quarterback but Troy has stepped up and won the BIG games when the pressure was on to win them and isn't that what the Heisman should be about. The man who can make the Big Plays and be the Leader when called upon.

BIG MOVER: STEVE SLATON

WEST VIRGINIA RB
Not only did Slaton's team lose, but he lost fumbles on consecutive carries -- the second of which was returned for a touchdown. He's still in line for an invitation to New York, but teammate Pat White might be more deserving.

The top five

1Troy Smith, Ohio State QB: Smith and the Buckeyes looked sluggish in the second half, but a win is a win -- and as long as that keeps happening Smith will be the man to beat. Sat.: 108 passing yards. Season: 2,006 passing yards, 22 TDs; one rushing TD.

2Brady Quinn, Notre Dame QB: Another strong showing for Quinn, who appears poised to take this thing if Smith & Co. falter. Sat.: 346 passing yards, four TDs. Season: 2,579 passing yards, 25 TDs; two rushing TDs.

3Marshawn Lynch, Cal RB: Showed his versatility in front of a large West Coast TV audience. Sat.: 81 rushing yards, one TD; 45 receiving yards, one TD. Season: 988 rushing yards, nine TDs; 261 receiving yards, four TDs.

4Mike Hart, Michigan RB: The only cog that consistently works on a sputtering offense. Sat.: 154 rushing yards, one TD. Season: 1,281 rushing yards 10 TDs; 122 receiving yards.

5Steve Slaton, West Virginia RB: He put up big numbers in the big game against Louisville, but gave up the big turnovers, too. Thurs.: 156 rushing yards, one TD; 74 receiving yards. Season: 1,215 rushing yards, 10 TDs; 161 receiving yards.

Really? I'm not sure which Heisman race you watched last year, but I don't ever remember anyone ever saying it was Vince Young's to lose. If anything, Leinart and Bush had it wrapped up from game 1.

As for your history of dropping votes, maybe on your PS2 that happens, but historically, the Heisman has been decided early and late pushes are rarely successful.

The only way Troy loses is if he plays bad against Michigan and loses while Quinn lights up USC in a win.

The Heisman is determined by voters, and anyone who has suffered through a presidential election campaign knows elections are won by one thing - sound bytes. For better or worse, we are not a society that looks at issues in great depth before voting. We hear or read a few things that the media feeds us, and we make a choice. The kicker is, the information that is conveyed by the media is almost always ten second snippets, or sound bytes, and that is as far as most go in data collection in making a decision. I see the Heisman race as little different. You think these voters are breaking down every game by Troy and Quinn? Right. Or is it more likely that they tune into Sports Center and see the one or two "sound bytes" that ESPN presents and then goes about watching the rest of the program? My contention is the winner of this race will be the one who has the most/best sound bytes, and right now that is unquestionably Troy. Quinn puts up some nice numbers, but have you seen a play by him even remotely electric as the one by Troy against PSU? No way. For my money, the only advantage that Quinn has right now is the ND factor, but he is way, way behind in sound bytes.

So is your point Troy won with his worst performance and Brady lost with his worst b/c Quinn's stats are better than Troy in his worst game.

Depends on how you define better... Brady threw 3 interceptions (I believe one was returned for a touchdown) with a wide open offense... Troy threw only 10 passes in the second half, every time Illinios knew the pass was coming... I'd say both had equally bad days (statistical wise).
