Peterson out for season with broken collarbone

Associated Press

NORMAN, Okla. -- Heisman Trophy hopeful Adrian Peterson broke his collarbone on a dive into the end zone Saturday, and the Oklahoma star running back will miss the rest of the regular season.

Peterson was injured on his last carry of the game -- a 53-yard scoring run with about 6:40 remaining that completed the 23rd-ranked Sooners' 34-9 win over Iowa State.

Peterson ran for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Peterson, a junior, who has 1,030 yards this season and entered the weekend as the nation's fourth-leading rusher, was second in Heisman voting as a freshman. He was playing for the first time in years before his father, who had spent about eight years in federal prison for money laundering.

"Just diving into the end zone and when he landed, he landed wrong," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "At this point it looks like the best thing, the earliest he would be ready to play, would be a bowl game."

This Heisman race just got a lot less interesting.

This is kind of a new thing for OSU. Will anybody be wearing #10 next year, or is there a grace period before they retire the number?

Hmm. Wolfe and Peterson should both be out of the race now. Kind of a double-edged sword, though. Now, Quinn and the hype-machine should gain a couple spots in the top 5 or so.
Good call. Peterson and Wolfe both falling out is probably the worst thing for Troy's chances. Now Quinn moves up by default, and gets the benefit of the USC game on 11/25 after Ohio State is already in the barn with their season over. Quinn could "steal" it with one proverbial Hail Flutie type play without any other clear #2 Heisman contenders taking away votes.

That said, I think there's a difference between the Heisman, which honors the "most outstanding player" in college football, and the typical award. That word "outstanding" suggests a level of excellence that Smith, in my mind, hasn't achieved.

But who has? Is there a player out there who has wowed anyone this season? The player with the best statistics is tailback Garrett Wolfe, but he made the mistake of accepting a scholarship at Northern Illinois. I say that tongue-in-cheek, because I don't think Wolfe has anything else to prove, even if he is in the Mid-American Conference. The Senior Bowl, which doesn't invite anyone that it doesn't think will interest the NFL, is going to invite Wolfe.

Come away from the dark force, Ivan. Come toward the light! :slappy:
