2006 BCS, polls, Bowl Predictions and computer ratings

Really good question tibor - a little digging here on obvious seasons ('68, '02, early '80 etc) does not show any such 1/2 or 2/1 ranking.

I don't know if this is the only instance, but it shows it happened at least once before.

You have to put Rutgers/West Virginia/Louisville ahead of ND since they have no losses.

Why?

I think three teams control their destiny...Ohio State, Michigan, and USC. The rest need help to get in. If ND beats USC, an undefeated West Virgina or Louisville would probably get in.

Not likely. ND is projected to have a top 10 schedule (per the old BCS SOS method). Louisville is projected to have a schedule in the high 30s. West Virginia is projected to have a schedule in the 60s.

It's been said for years that the BE is weak enough that an undefeated BE team might get jumped by 1-loss teams. I don't know why everyone is freaking out at the suggestion that ND could be that team.

Given the propensity of the ND hype machine, they'd be the perfect candidate to do it.

I agree all the way with the ND . Too many teams would have to lose. WV could beat Louis and tOSU will beat Meech. So even if ND beats USC do they climb above all the unfeated? Lord I hope not. I wouldnt put it past the media to try.
:osu:

To many teams will lose by virtue of the schedule:
1. tOSU plays Michigan very late. Thus, one of them must lose
2. That same week, ND plays USC. The whole concept of "controls its own destiny" assumes for sake of argument that the team wins out. Thus, ND beats SC for our purposes.
3. Louisville plays West Virginia

Just by that alone you have 3 teams dropping out. Since ND only needs to get into the top 2 to go to the BCS, they don't have to compete with an undefeated Michigan or tOSU.

They just have to beat out the Louisville/West Viriginia winner (assuming that winner doesn't lose some other game) and other 1-loss (assuming they win out) teams like Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, and Cal.

If you have any doubts about this happening, you don't know much about Notre Dame. They would have a 50-50 shot of doing this without the computer help. With the computer help (which helps them in the BCS and gives pundits something to point to) it is a lock.

ND controls its own destiny. Win out and they will be playing for the BCS championship. The tOSU/UM, ND/SC, and WVU/UL games assure it.

I bet Weis hopes you're wrong. I can't imagine ND wanting to face off with OSU or SCum again so that they can get blown out for the NC. I bet he would much rather face off with one of the Big Least or ACC teams. Of course I could be wrong. Weis would have an extra week to prepare than he did last season. :p

Nice to see the big 10 on tap.

when was the last time OSU/scUM were 1/2 or 2/1 in the AP poll?

As I posted earlier September 1976 was the last time that OSU / Mchigan or Michigan / OSU were both 1 / 2 in the AP Poll.
Yahoo

The Big Ten becomes the first conference in six years to have the top two teams in the media poll. Nebraska and Kansas State of the Big 12 were 1-2 in October, 2000.
The last time Big Ten teams held the top two spots in the AP poll was 1985, when Iowa was No. 1 and Michigan was No. 2.
Ohio State and Michigan were Nos. 1 and 2 for two weeks in September, 1976, but Bo Schembechler's Wolverines were on top of Woody Hayes' Buckeyes back then.
This year, Jim Tressel's Buckeyes have been No. 1 since the preseason. Their archrivals to the North have been making a steady climb, starting the season at No. 14.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines play Nov. 18 in Columbus, Ohio.

Save yourself some time. I did that research a couple weeks ago. The answer, along with some others that pepole will be wondering about, is in the tOSU-scUM game thread.

EDIT - I've moved that thread onto the main board. The Q/A's are in post 121 (top of page 9 for most of you).

Discussion of the matchup, and historical aspects of the rankings, should occur in that game thread.

I loved Howie's comments about Tressel.

It was something like "Jim Tressel is as good as it gets." He also said that "I love their QB, their coach." He said something else after that but Barry Alvarez (I think) said something over him.
