2006-07 Big Ten Basketball Thread

It's losses like these that are going to make the Big Ten look more and more mediocre than ever. You really can't trust anyone to win a game other that Wisconsin and us. I'm returning to a prediction of 4 teams to the NCAA unless something spectacular happens...

MINNEAPOLIS ? It was easy to see who the star of the show was yesterday at the reunion of Minnesota?s 1982 Big Ten championship team.
Detroit Pistons coach Flip Saunders, an assistant coach on that team, received a rousing ovation and was serenaded with chants of "We want Flip! We want Flip!" when he was introduced with other members of the team during a timeout in the second half of Minnesota?s loss to Ohio State.

I think the Big Ten will get 5 bids.

I think Illinois ends up 9-7 in the regular season and gets a bid. I also think that MSU will get in. They got the toughest possible conference schedule, and the committee will recognize that.

I'll agree with Illinois. I think they should make it with their cupcake schedule coming up. MSU is another animal. They will be lucky to go 2-2 with two home-home games against Wisconsin and one home game against Indiana. If they do go 2-2, that puts them 21-10, 8-8 in the conference, 2-7 on the road, and 1-4 against top 25 teams (seeing as Texas is now out). They would need at least 2 wins in the conference tourney, IMHO, to make it to the NCAA tourney. It is possible of course, but it is also very possible they finish 1-3 and lose on day 2 of the tournament, finishing 21-12 and most likely having their bubble burst.

The thing is the committee doesnt use wins against he the AP polls top 25 they look at the RPI top 50...

I think tOSU, Wisky, and Indiana are locks, unless IU would lose all the rest of their games...

Illinois could struggle with with the recent injuries, but they should win out which should put them in...

Iowa is a team that if they win out the regular season with 2 tough games, but at home against Purdue and Illinois and then win a game or 2 in the big ten tourney they will get strong consideration.

MSU has a tough stretch, but if they can go 2-2 with one of those wins being over Wisky they could get in.

Michigan could possibly get in, but they would need a 3-1 record and probably a win in the tourney...I see another year in the NIT for them.

Purdue has 3 easy ones and a game @ Iowa. They should win out which would put them at 10-6 in the conference and that should get them in.

So overall I think that we will get tOSU, Wisky, Indiana, Purdue for sure.

Then I think that Illinois if they win out they get in and if MSU could come up with a 2-2 stretch they could get in. Also Michigan and Iowa still have shots.

I think Michigan will be fired up for our game, knowing that if they win they will probably get in the tourney...Could be a scary game for us being the last game of the season on the road, after a big test against Wisky and Michigan feeling that they need the win to get into the tourney...

Curious as to why no Purdue?

I see Purdue going 4-1 over their last 5 games, which will put them 21-10, 10-7 in the Big Ten, 3-9 on the road, and 1-4 against ranked teams (Georiga Tech is no longer ranked)

I'd say they have just as much of a chance as MSU, given MSU had a much better SOS. I think Us and Wisconsin are in 100%, Indiana 95%, Illinois 75%, MSU 40%, Purdue 40%, Iowa 25%, nothing from there on.

I would say that a 10-6 record in the big ten is pretty good. A win against Virginia is a good win, b/c they will are a top 50 RPI I believe. I agree that they have struggled on the road, but down the stretch in the last 10 games they have played pretty well...Their only loses will of been to us twice and they played us pretty tough. They alos have a win over Indiana in that stretch.

Depaul, Mizzou, Oklahmoma are all decent wins too...

I also don't seem them being an early exit in the big ten tourney, which would should give them at least 1 win.

I also think that Michigan still has a chance if they can win some big games...Not a great chance, but they should still be in the discussion...

Even Indiana is 3-8 on the road. Maybe it's just the fact that I tend to be very tough on the Big Ten in basketball because of their constant humiliation by the ACC. Then again maybe it's your Big Ten homerism

Either way, I can guarantee when I'm filling out my brackets, the only two Big Ten teams I'll have winning a game at all will be Wisconsin and us. I hope I'm grossly underestimating the Big Ten's potential.

First I just want to point out how hard it is to win on the road in college bball.

Also lets take a look at the ACC/Big 10 top to bottom...

I would say that we have the more top heavy league.

- UNC vs. tOSU or Wisky is a wash and a great matchup on a neutral court.

- Virginia vs. tOSU or Wisky who ever doesnt finish # 1 is clearly a huge advantage to the big ten. Also Purdue already took care of business against Virgina.

- BC vs Indiana is also a wash on a neutral court. I think BC has gotten a little over deserved hype, but they are a solid team. MSU played them tough in the ACC/big ten challenge @ BC. IU is a better team than MSU.

- Va Tech vs. Illinois - Not sure on this one. Both have had their struggles, but Va Tech has had some big wins...Also Iowa took Va Tech to the wire at Va Tech.

- Dook vs Iowa - Dook is a team that once they really started playing some tough teams they have struggled, and Iowa has played a lot better once they hit conference play. Also Dook won a close game against IU in the big ten challenge, but I would say IU and Dook have taken opposite paths since then and Iowa lost a close one at Va Tech.

We could go on, but I don't think the ACC is that much better than the big ten. It will eventually come down to matchup in the tourney...

I really think that big ten as a conference has some pretty solid teams and see them getting 5 or maybe even 6, and I disagree with the statement Wisky or tOSU are the only teams going to win in the conference in the big dance.
