2006-07 Big Ten Basketball Thread

Amaker is the most dillusional coach in the country, I sware to God. He must carry an index card with that quote around in his pocket because that is his canned response after every loss. If I were a UM basketball fan I'd be up in arms right now. Although they haven't had elite talent and have had some injury problems, there is no reason at least one or two of his teams shouldn't have made it to the dance...and they're not gonna make it this year either.

It's just their turn. We had to suffer through the Cooper and O'Brien(who could have sent the entire program in the shitter for years if we didn't get Matta to clean it up) years. Enjoy it now because eventually good things will happen for them.

the basketball team at the end of ayers era...
bruces last couple of years and what was left...

if you ask me i believe obie left the bball program in better shape than he joined it.

Well, I remember he had one of the biggest turnarounds in NCAA history but he did more than drive the program into mediocrity. He gave it a horrible reputation which Matta is turning around. We could've lost Oden, Conley, and Cook along with the rest of the "Thad 5" because of O'Brien.

Indiana is in a dog fight at Iowa...

Down 49-48 with 13 minutes left...

Iowa's tough at home but still. It's hard to figure this Indiana team out. They can play us tough at home and beat Wiscy yet they can get beaten convincingly by a mediocre Illini team and struggle with a bad Iowa team.

Good win for Iowa today, tough for Indiana.

Until the Big Ten can prove themselves against OOC opponents, I believe this is a terribly down year for the Big Ten with Indiana losing today. I don't think anyone outside us and Wisconsin have much of a prayer in the tournament.

I don't know depending on matchups there are some guys like Haluska and Neitzel that can score and keep their team in a game and get them over the top, and Indiana is a very solid 6 seed that might be able to do a little damage...

Overall I would say we are looking at 5 teams and possibly a 6th...

I'll assume we have 3 in for sure. I'll assume Michigan has no shot as they simply buckle under the slightest of pressure.

Iowa has won 1 road game all year, yes that's right, 1. Their 1.5 man team of Haluska and Tyler Smith will have to basically win out or have 1 loss if they want to make the tournament at a current 13-10. I don't see them winning at Wisconsin or Mich St. either.

Illinois will be a bubble team most likely. At 17-8 I see them winning 4 of their final 6 and finishing 21-10 going into the Big Ten Tourney. Being 9-7 in our conference at that point, I think they need at least 1 if not 2 wins in the tournament to be sure to make march Madness. It could happen. Of course Illinois has 2 wins all year on the road, against pathetic teams such as Minnesota and Missouri.

Mich St. will be lucky to go 4-3 in their final 7 games, and I think will go 3-4, putting them at 20-11. In my mind, they need 2 wins in our Tournament to get in for sure. If they fall early, they are in trouble. They also have the possibility to fold much of the remainder of the season. I think their fans are losing some faith as they are taking some cheap shots at "innocent" people in order to feel better. Oh and MSU joins Iowa with 1 road win all year.

I'm going to say 4-5 teams make it in this year. Our mid-tier teams simply cannot perform on the road, and that is going to cost them dearly. Wisconsin and the bucks are the only Big Ten teams with winning road records. Mommy isn't there to cheer you on in March.

OSU, UW, IU are shoe-ins.

MSU might be close, but I think the committee will give an Izzo-coached squad the nod.

Illinois... very thin layer on that bubble. What is their best OOC win? 17-6 Bradley (who is 1 game over .500 in conf)? They're lucky they skip a 2nd osu game down the stretch.

Iowa & Michigan will get left out.

You also have to keep in mind that with the conference tourney that a team like Iowa/scUM gets hot wins 3 games and gets in...

I also think with the RPI of us and Wisky and if Indiana could continue to play solid they could pull the overall stregth of hte conference up...

You also have to keep in mind that the big East and big 12 are down so we could sneak that extra team in there, unless they put 4 in from the MVC...

Interesting article on the big ten.

Mike Lucas: Coaches say Big Ten deserves more respect
By Mike Lucas

After playing three games in seven days (from Sunday to Saturday), and winning twice, including the first road victory of the season, University of Iowa men's basketball coach Steve Alford was in much better spirits on Monday's Big Ten teleconference than some of his brethren.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As the linchpins of two of college basketball?s top five teams, Alando Tucker of Wisconsin and Greg Oden of Ohio State are monopolizing mention of potential Big Ten players of the year. There might be none in the league more valuable to his team, though, than Iowa guard Adam Haluska.

Coaches stick up for the conference

The Big Ten seems to be fighting a perception problem similar to the one it faced during football season.
In football, Ohio State and Michigan were the 1-2 punch and Wisconsin a third wheel with an easy schedule. That image gained momentum after OSU and Michigan lost in Bowl Championship Series games.
Sure ? the theory goes ? Ohio State and Wisconsin are good. But after that, many college basketball outlets believe the conference is a hodge-podge.

Cont'd...
