2006-07 Big Ten Basketball Thread

I can see the future, and it says?

Well, it probably says "Ann Arbor is STILL a whore", but I am more curious what the future holds for the Buckeyes hoops team. I play in a college hoops fantasy league and I am trying to figure out if I should still buy the Buckeyes right now despite their high price. Basically, to be worth it for me, they would have to win the Big Ten tourney and make it to the Final Four. Anything better than that and I make out great, otherwise it will kill my chances.

So after watching the road win at Purdue and seeing Wisconsin get dropped by Indiana, are the Buckeyes poised to make run to the finals? At the midway point of the season, what do all you Ohio State fans expect from here on out?

scUM blows an 11 point halftime lead and loses to a mediocre Iowa team 69-62. How much longer are they going to stick with Amaker?
Per UM rivals board... TA's actual post game quote:

You have to hand it to Iowa. They are a great team (rpi #118). I'm really proud of our guys though. We never gave up and unfortunatly tonight just wasnt our night. I'm perplexed by why everyone in the crowd was booing near the end. We cant win them all, right?

Amaker is the most dillusional coach in the country, I sware to God. He must carry an index card with that quote around in his pocket because that is his canned response after every loss. If I were a UM basketball fan I'd be up in arms right now. Although they haven't had elite talent and have had some injury problems, there is no reason at least one or two of his teams shouldn't have made it to the dance...and they're not gonna make it this year either.

Indiana Ends No. 2 Wisconsin's Streak

By The Associated Press
For Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson, it was an unusual and welcome sight. A.J. Ratliff scored 18 of his season-high 20 points in the second half and the Hoosiers held off No. 2 Wisconsin 71-66 on Wednesday night, snapping the Badgers' 17-game winning streak.
After the victory, the Indiana faithful stormed onto the court to enjoy the win. Sampson, the former Oklahoma coach who took over at Indiana before this season, wasn't exactly comfortable.

Indiana Upset Leads to Wild Celebration

By STEVE HERMAN
AP Sports Writer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? A.J. Ratliff's scariest moment came after the game was over. Ratliff scored 18 of his season-high 20 points in the second half and Indiana held off No. 2 Wisconsin 71-66 on Wednesday night, ending the Badgers' 17-game winning streak. But before Ratliff and the rest of his teammates could get off the court, several thousand delirious fans stormed out of the stands and onto the floor in celebration.
"I'm claustrophobic anyway," said Ratliff, who was quickly mobbed by the Indiana fans. "I was just trying to get to the locker room. It was funny, but it was kind of scary at the same time."

REW SHARP U-M hoops has built a culture of neglect

January 31, 2007
BY DREW SHARP

The University of Michigan must decide whether it's serious about basketball. If not, fine. Just stop wasting our time with empty claims of a commitment to excellence. Accept neglect as the program's mission statement, and admit you're too scared to compete.
Tolerating underachievement has damaged the Michigan brand name as much as looking the other way in the face of scandal.

Gophers topple Wildcats

February 1, 2007
The Associated Press
EVANSTON -- Jamal Abu-Shamala scored 19 points and Dan Coleman added 17 to lead Minnesota to a 62-55 victory over Northwestern on Wednesday night.
Abu-Shamala went 5-of-8 from 3-point range and hit 7-of-11 shots overall. He hit the first of three consecutive 3-point attempts for the Gophers as they turned a two-point edge to a 59-50 lead with 1:25 to play.
Lawrence McKenzie added 11 points -- including three second-half 3s -- and five assists for Minnesota (9-13, 3-5), which won its second in a row after losing five straight. Northwestern (11-10, 1-7) defeated Minnesota on the road Jan. 20 for its only win since Big Ten play started and had won six straight in this series.

Amaker needs a miracle to save his job now

Thursday, February 01, 2007

Every coaching regime gone bad has a point of no return, a time when you knew there'd be no happy ending.
This might be it for Tommy Amaker. That moment.
It should be it. n a game they had to win, against a team they were supposed to beat, the University of Michigan blew a 12-point second-half lead and, once again, utterly and totally collapsed. The Hawkeyes built their unlikely 69-62 victory with a 20-1 run during which Amaker's team seemed absolutely helpless, unable to get a quality shot, or handle the ball, or make a defensive stand.
Any Michigan basketball fan had seen it all before. This is, ultimately, what Amaker's teams do....

It should be evident that, ethics aside, Kelvin Sampson is a really excellent basketball coach. His Whosyers are not the 3rd-most-talented team in the league, but they are clearly the 3rd-best team. Great win against the Badgers.

He has a similar history to that of Thad Matta when it comes to 20 win seasons.
