2006-07 Big Ten Basketball Thread

Who won that ACC/Big10 Challenge??:wink2:

IMO they had favorable matchups and got more games at home than we did.

If we play UNC at home I think we get them. If Iowa gets Va Tech at home they would of got them. If Indiana get Dook at home, if MSU gets BC at home. It seemed like all the tight games were in ACC country and we got games like PSU/Ga Tech at home which is a no brainer wherever it is, and same with Wisky/FSU. We get those 2 on the road and two of those other games at home and I think the outcome might of been a little different.

If Wisky goes on the road against FSU they get them...

I know there are alot of ifs, but overall the games were close and we lost some tough games on the road and the game that really hurt was Illinois losing to Maryland, but if you look at those two teams, b4 the injuries to the two Illini guys and I think Illinois has been playing alot better than Maryland now.

The ACC has owned us. Even when we play at home we lose to them. IMO they have favorable matchups when they play the big 10  .
The only teams I see going anywhere in the tourny is TOSU and Wisc. the rest can be beat by anyone

CBF, I totally understand your reasoning and and respect it as well. I do also believe the Big Ten is more top heavy than the ACC, but I also believe the top ACC teams can easily compete with the top Big Ten teams. The middle of the pack ACC teams I think would dismantle the middle Big Ten teams, again in my opinion.

Eventually we need to go from opinion to fact. The fact is that the ACC takes the Big Ten to the cleaners year in and out during our tournament. Yes the tournament is early in the year and might serve as a better benchmark if it was later, but it is what it is. Until there is a better statistical benchmark, this is the best we've got.

If you want to use NCAA Tournament performance, the Big Ten and ACC were as follows:

2006
B10: 3-6
ACC: 6-5

2005
B10: 12-5
ACC: 12-4

2004
B10: 3-3
ACC: 14-8

Total
B10: 18-14
ACC: 32-17

Unfortunately, that's pure domination by the ACC considering they've only had 4 more teams make the tournament over the past 3 years.

The fact is that the ACC simply has been a better conference every year. Until recent history can prove me wrong, I will continue to believe that and will not let my Big Ten homerism get in the way of facts.

CBF, don't take it the wrong way, I always respect your opinion :)

Fwiw I agree with Golf and gal. Until we can consistently, as a conference, beat the ACC we are dog meat, second best, not as good. But hey That doesn't mean the Bucks can't go thru the dance and the ACC like a hot through melted butter. When it comes down to it that's all I care about anyway.
In conclusion If we don't lose another game this year I will be pleased as punch. The Acc can take a hike.

the tournament is about matchups. so seeding and matchups have a lot to do with this if you ask me. that being said over said time span the acc was better...

Conference ruling roost again
But a 1-2 showdown is a little different in basketball

February 20, 2007
Aguy named Bo is taking his team to Columbus for a No.1 vs. No.2 matchup against Ohio State. But this is basketball, not football. And while Bo Ryan's Wisconsin Badgers, who moved up to No. 1 in the Associated Press media poll Monday, and Thad Matta's second-ranked Buckeyes will play in the shadow of the Horseshoe on Sunday (3 p.m., Ch. 2), both have games to play before that.
Wisconsin, which visits Michigan State tonight, has a more perilous matchup than Ohio State, which plays host to Penn State on Wednesday. But both get first priority over the big game.
''Football and basketball are so different,'' Matta said Monday, mentioning the Buckeyes' 64-62 escape from Penn State last Wednesday. ''We've got a team coming in here that we beat by two points. And with 12 games as opposed to 30 games, it's harder for the fans to stay [pumped] up.

Iowa eyeing surge for tourney berth

By ANDREW LOGUE
REGISTER STAFF WRITER

February 20, 2007

Iowa City, Ia. - Wisconsin is No. 1 and Ohio State is No. 2.

Is anybody paying attention to the rest of the Big Ten Conference?

The Badgers and Buckeyes hold the top two spots in the Associated Press men's basketball poll, which was released Monday. The rest of the league, however, remains muddled in mediocrity.

Iowa (15-12, 7-6 in the Big Ten) remains one of six teams within a game of third place in the standings.

A late-season surge could result in a bid to the NCAA Tournament. A slump, meanwhile, means spending Selection Sunday waiting for the National Invitation Tournament to announce its pairings.

MSU savors shot at No. 1 Wisconsin
Tim Martin

EAST LANSING ? Michigan State gets a rare chance to tangle with a top-ranked team on its home court Tuesday.
The Spartans (19-8, 6-6 Big Ten) host new No. 1 Wisconsin (26-2, 12-1) in a game vitally important to their postseason hopes. A win over the Badgers would put Michigan State in the national spotlight and go a long way toward securing a 10th-straight trip to the NCAA tournament.
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Monday his team has a great opportunity to play against Wisconsin, at the top of The Associated Press poll for the first time in school history. But pulling an upset will be a tall order against a Badger team that Izzo considers a Final Four contender.
