2005 Winter Conditioning (official thread)

The way I understand it, Gonzo and Ginn both have 'all-caps' speed. I seem to have the impression (and don't ask where it came from, cause i don't know) that Ginn is FAST, and gonzo is QUICK--as in Ginn's got better top-end speed, while Gonzo has better acceleration

I could just be making it up, and let's face it... any way you cut it they're both hella fast.
This is what Steve tells me... Gonzo right off the bat is super fast, but once Ginn gets rolling there is no catching up.

...Concerning TG2, I recall reading recently that Coach T told TG1 that his son would play CB in red zone situations...

I'd really like to see that link...you may be recalling a thread on this site in which someone suggested that Ginn would be best suited for red zone defense in order to get him in on D yet minimize his exposure to injury (that, I remember).

Hey Mili,

FWIW I'm thinking it was over on BN in one of Helwagon's chats, IIRC. Sometime in the last month. It definitely wasn't a poster. It was a writer or reporter commenting on what TG1 told them Tress said concerning TG2's status on Defense.

We'll see...I still like the idea.

Qb

Before I begin, let me just state that, if I get to vote for who should start at QB for Ohio State, I'd vote for Troy Smith.

But I'd like to at least give Zwick the respect he deserves by comparing how each quarterback did through the season. And I'm comparing the two quarterbacks based on the most important stat (or possibly ONLY stat) - wins and losses.

First, Zwick: He beat a couple chump teams - Cincinnati and Marshall. He didn't look great against Marshall, I'll agree. But the win is a win. (Ok - some of you will say Nugent beat Marshall. I agree, but Nugent didn't seem to want to be QB.) He beat a really tough NC State team. Again, he didn't look great, but he didn't lose the game. Finally, I thought he looked really good against Ok St. Possibly his best game as a buckeye. Sure, the defense should get the credit for winning these games, but Zwick (like Brent Musberger's least favorite player - Krenzel) didn't lose them.

Then he lost to NORTHWESTERN! SUCK!!!!!! That may have cancelled out all of his good games the rest of the season. However, if you consider the offense scored a bunch of points (I forget how many - maybe 30?), and it was the defense that lost that game, maybe we shouldn't be so hard on Zwick for that one. The one time the offense actually does something is the time the defense doesn't even show up. He also lost to Wisconsin and Iowa - both really good teams.

Zwick's record: 4-3. Against "good" teams: 2-2. Against "bad" teams: 2-1.

Smith: He started off with wins against Indiana and Penn State. Hoo-rah. I think the only team that couldn't beat Indiana is the team of Kerry/Edwards. Then he beat Michigan State. (I know.. HE didn't beat Michigan State, but I have to give him credit for beating Michigan State if I'm going to give Zwick credit for beating Marshall or NC State.) And I'm not sure if Michigan State was a "good" team or a "bad" team. I'll put them in the "good" category. Anyway, he lost to Purdue - a really good Purdue team, that should have beaten Wisconsin and Michigan.

Going into the Michigan game, Smith's record: 3-1. "Good" teams: 1-1. "Bad" teams: 2-0. I think that the two QBs are pretty close, as far as their records go.

BUT (here's where I put all my support behind Smith) Smith beat Michigan. He not only beat Michigan, he STOMPED them. And it wasn't like Michigan State, where Ginn bailed him out - Smith looked awesome. He scrambled well, he threw well, he threw while scrambling well.

The ONLY thing I can find against Smith is his off-field problems. "They" say that that's why Zwick started the season, and why Smith lost playing time. And, of course, he was benched for the Alamo Bowl. If he can get his act together, I think he'll be the only quarterback I can think of to beat Michigan three times. AWESOME!

Dude, Welcome to the Planet.

Since you're new, I'll offer a piece of advice; before starting yet another Zwick/Smith thread, go back and read through 8 or 10 of the previous 100 threads dedicated to this topic.

Exactly...welcome aboard, but please use the search function located above. We try to run a "tidy" board free of numerous similar threads.

Enjoy the Planet.

I cannot wait for the spring game to evaluate our two QBs. I feel Smith is the guy unless his off-field problems are as big as some have rumored (as in there are more like santonio who do not feel he has made things right).

Good post, and welcome to the planet. Since we often have tons of threads going at any time, use the search feature in the menu bar to look for past threads on zwick and smith.

Not to turn this into a Zwick vs Smith thread any more than it already has, but this drives me NUTS, JZ threw for about 324 yards in this game and in the first half looked better than anyone behind center in quite some time. That said the second half was the opposite (aside for some nice crisp out passes at the end to put Nuge in position to do his thing).

I apologize for not keeping the threads "tidy." I didn't take the time to search for what has apparently already been discussed.

I don't remember the stats of most games. I don't know how many yards passing or running or punting Zwick had in whatever game. I just know that, against Marshall, he threw a couple passes where the safety should have called for a fair catch. And that's something Krenzel didn't do.

I think Zwick would be a solid Buckeye QB. And he showed that against Ok St. But I feel sorry for him. In my mind, Smith is the QB until he loses the job.

I think Zwick showed improvement, but it is smith's job to lose IF the suspension did not burn too many bridges IMO.

The true guy I feel sorry for is McMullen. He looked outstanding and possibly better than krenzel most of last year, and probably would have done better than him vs. UM. Zwick has potential, but McMullen stepped in and looked like a starter almost every time.

No problem about not searching, there is a learning curve at BP and you usually get reprimanded at first but no one holds it against you in the future. I made more mistakes than just this type of one when I got here. We all do.

I agree with you about McMullen. Back in 2001 when McMullen started vs. Illinois, I thought "Get him out of here! Krenzel's better!" I probably had no evidence at that point to support that, but I think I was right.

In 2003, thought, when McMullen went in and beat Penn State (should not have been as tough as it was), I was starting to think that it must really suck to be the guy who doesn't even get a fair chance. I think McMullen was the better passer, but Krenzel was the better quarterback.

You'd like to think so

Yeah I agree that McMullen was the better passer and CK the better QB. I supported the decision of Tressel to bring krenzel back in and while hindsight is 20-20, I think it might have gone differently with a healthy QB.

I think both of our QBs are gonna get a very legit shot after a 1/2 season each. Here's to hoping that QB is Smith, as I think he can make some better scrambling throws than krenzel, is clearly faster and more athletic, and we know how well CK did without being a great passer. Pair that with much better WRs (at least in terms of depth at the end of each year, 03 was good until Carter got hurt), and I think Smith could take us back to the NC game (winning will be a different story).

Troy Smith, a Heisman candidate, this year!

Troy Smith will be a Heisman candidate, this year! With the weapons at his disposal and his elusiveness he is a ESPN highlight waiting to happen!

On a different note, does anybody really think Al Dukes gets back in school? I'd like to see things turn out OK for him, but isn't he damaged goods, now? Would the school even want him? Guilty or not.
