10/8/05 - Columbus, OH
The Buckeyes continued to roll up the scoreboard this weekend when they hosted Illinois State. A chilly afternoon with a steady wind served as the background for this match up. The Buckeyes kicked off to Illinois State and were soon able to regain possession. Wing Andrew Kender was able to recover one of his kicks and take it all the way across the try line for the first score in the 5th minute. The Bucks then kept driving down the field and captain Phil Nightengale ran over some Illinois State defenders to record himself a try in the 12th minute. Three minutes later wing Nick Bell received a pass from a 40 meter run by Doug Olson and got his first try. In yet another three minutes freshman prop Knab scored a try in his first A-side game. In the 25th minute 8-man Jewitt recorded his first try of the game. 2 minutes later wing Andrew Kender was able to score his second try. Three minutes after that wing Nick Bell recovered his kick in the try line for his second try. Three minutes later flanker Charles Bleakmore ran through several defenders to add five more points to the board. Three minutes later after the Buckeyes blew through an Illinois State ruck, flyhalf Tonderai Kambarami ended up with the ball on a breakaway and scored after throwing a would-be tackler on his back. After rearranging several positions after the half, the Buckeyes came out and started the half a little flat. Then during the 11th minute, 8-man Jewitt sparked a light for the Buckeyes by scoring his second try. After a couple runs by out center Mike Adler, inside center Alex Moller came through on a breakaway to score his first try of the day. Four minutes later wing Nick Bell was able to score from Altieri’s breakaway. After the ensuing kickoff flyhalf Doug Olson broke through the Illinois State defense and ran for 80 meters for his first try. The Bucks then pinned Illinois State back by their try line and center Alex Moller ran the ball in after receiving the kick. In the 34th minute lock Cody Albright (scrumhalf in the first half) took a breakaway to add five more points to the scoreboard. Two minutes later, Nick Bell took a pass from fullback Dane Robinson and ran down the sideline to add another five points. The Bucks then scored one last time with 8-man Jewitt scoring in the 38th minute. The scored ended with Ohio State 95 and Illinois State 0. Kender converted 3 kicks and Olson converted 2.

After the half the Buckeyes were able to drive down the field but were unable to put up any points until the 35th minute. Ohio State overruns Virginia Tech
By Brian Lowe
#8 Ohio State has positioned itself as one of the teams to beat come playoff time in the Midwest with a 50-12 win against Virginia Tech Saturday night in Columbus, OH.
The Buckeyes led by just 13-7 at the main break, but stormed home with five second half tries to earn the W. Virginia Tech closed the gap to one point early in the second stanza when they scored from a miscued OSU kick, but that would be as close as the visitors would get. Ohio State made a positional change after that, sending in replacement flyhalf Doug Olson, who changed the complexion of the match with astute ball distribution.
Other Buckeye players who impressed included the backrow combination of Jake Legros, Brandon Jewett and Bubba Bleakmore. Prop Dave Knab, a freshman from Cleveland played well, as did lock Eric Shulte, a sophomore who the Buckeyes converted from center. Another player of note who started in the B side game was center Tony Dieppa who notched a hat-trick of tries and will likely get some game time in the A side.
“It was a tight game that really only broke out in the last 25 minutes,” Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told American Rugby News. “We made some mistakes early on, but then settled down and took over, especially our eightman Jake Legros, who we played in the second row. We started hitting our lineouts and all in all, I’d say we were pretty happy with the result.”
OSU’s scheduled game against Middle Tennessee State on Sunday was cancelled as several MTSU coaching personnel are involved in Hurricane Katrina insurance assessment work and couldn’t make the trip.
Elsewhere in Midwest Pool play, the University of Northern Iowa again showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs by downing Purdue 23-18. Illinois State took care of Wisconsin 44-13, while Bowling Green beat Minnesota.
