College Latest: Clemson, Tennessee, OSU Win
September 25, 2005 – Two tries from lock forward Wayne Chemerly saw #11 Tennessee down #14 Purdue in Knoxville, Saturday.
Purdue took an early lead off a penalty goal but a minute letter Chemerly gave his side a lead they would never relinquish as he bulled over. The second row forward did the honors again later in the first half to secure a 10-3 lead at the break.
Scrumhalf Brett Jones slotted a penalty kick to make it 13-3 before freshman flyhalf Andrew Melroy scored. Jones' conversion made it 20-3. Purdue scored a try with three minutes left to make it 20-10.
Meanwhile #9 Ohio State rebounded from their big loss to Penn State with a 25-10 defeat of #14 Bowling Green. The Buckeye forwards did the better job in presenting solid possession, allowing them to attack more effectively. Meanwhile, despite having slightly more ball overall, the Bowling Green Falcons were repeatedly stymied by a tough OSU defense. Much of the second half was spent in and around the Ohio State 22 meter line, but that produced no Falcon points.
Ranked #20 Dartmouth was expected to lose by a fairly wide, but respectable, margin to #5 Army, but they almost pulled off the upset, losing 32-25 and knocking on the door. Dartmouth's superiority on the edges kept them in it and was eschewed for a more direct approach late, to their detriment.
Said heroic fullback Andrew Caspary, "we though if we could get it wide we had a good chance to score, but unfortunately during the last four penalties inside the 22, the try line just looked real close and the forwards tried to bull it in. It was a hard game but I was pleased with how we played."
"Dartmouth played well, much better than last year," said Army scrumhalf David Lodwick. "Their defense was strong and tough. We were a little concerned about their strength when going wide."
"In the last few minutes we knew we had to be strong on defense," added center Andrew Locke.
Clemson (#18) rose to 2-0 with a fairly workmanlike 37-14 victory over Albright College.
Flyhalf Brett Ferriera opened the scoring and Clemson also got tries from center Mike Ireson, and All American scrumhalf Dutch Jones in the first half. But they didn't close it out and a scrappy Albright team made it 20-14 at the break.
Clemson worked harder to keep their pattern in the second half and Ireson was especially good. No. 8 Mike Fitzgerald, hooker Jason Hinchman, and Jones again closed out the scoring.

After a Sean Miller put Air Force up 7-0 Colorado stormed back to lead 17-13 at halftime. It wasn't until late in the second half that Air Force took the lead, with wing Rosey Deas scoring and then scrumhalf John Cordova sneaking around off a ruck to add a try to his 14 points with the boot.
Both teams scored tries late to make it 32-24 in the end. It was the first loss for Colorado this season, but one that certainly shows they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
