We did get our first action from Donte Whiticker and Mike Coolia according to Andre Ware.

I also think there may have been a David PETERson that played inthe 2nd half, but something tells me Andre just mispronounced that one.

but non of these guys have played as well as San Antonio Holmes

I know Cordle is a redshirt, but I swear he played Sat. I am almost 100%

sure I saw him at center (I just checked and he is #64). Are their some

redshirt rules I don't know about? I don't see any point in ruining a year of

elegibility for mop-up duty, unless I am wrong about him being out there.

The guy with the catch last week was a walk-on (not Hartline). Troy Smith

was going nuts on the sideline when he made the grab.

My biggest concern next year is the Linebackers. We have D'Andrea coming back and that will be huge. Freeman, Hoobler, Kerr, and Laurinaitis should all be competing for the other LB spots. But are there any other freshmen or incoming freshmen that look like a competitor for a starting LB spot?

Curtis Terry has seen some time on special teams, and looks like a physical specimen. What what I've read about Homan and Moeller, not to mention Lenix, I think the competition will breed some good youngins to back up Freeman, D'Andrea, Laurinaitis & company.

It won't be like we will have a bunch of wide-eyed, snot-nosed kids out ther playing LB next year.
DeAndrea has been around forever, and Kerr will be in his 3rd year in the program. Freeman has seen significant action. Laurinaitis has got his feet wet this year. Barring injury to the starters, we should be very good again at LB. Not as dominant as this year, but not a liability either.

The experience of next year's LBs isn't what concerns me. What does concern me is whether or not these kids can play. Even in years where we had a great starting 3, the coaches always found time to rotate the 2nd stringers in.

The 2nd stringers haven't gotten any significant PT this season, and certainly not in any critical game situation. To me, that raises a flag: do the coaches have no faith in these kids to make plays?

At the LB spots, there should always be room for guys to play, if they can. In '02, Hawk, Carpenter, & D'Andrea saw a lot of game action behind Grant, Reynolds, & the Kaiser. Nai'l Diggs saw a lot of time as a redshirt Frosh behind the Big Kat, KJ, & Rudzinski in '97. I can go on, and on, and on .. it concerns me that the coaches haven't felt the need to put any of the back-ups on the field this season at critical times.

Well, we haven't blown that many teams out early like we did in the first half of '02 and back in '97. Kerr and Laurinaitis have been on the field each time the game was fairly secure. D'Andrea is just coming off his injury. Freeman is still hurt. We'll be fine.

I agree, a healthy Freeman would start on any other team in the nation and I've liked the little bit I've seen out of Laurinaitis.

Will D'Andrea be playing linebacker next year or Def. End?

Mili: "Well, we haven't blown that many teams out early like we did in the first half of '02 and back in '97."

Yeah, but my point is that regardless of blowouts, Tress & Coop played the young LBs during critical games and at critical times. Look at all the PT Hawk got in the mid-season Big Ten games & in the Fiesta Bowl in '02. Same for Diggs in '97, and any great LB.

I haven't seen Kerr or Laurinaitis on the field for any significant PT, and that concerns me.

"D'Andrea is just coming off his injury."

D'Andrea has been hurt way too much for me to hang my hat on him for next season.

You could be right, but I just haven't seen anything from these LBs that makes me comfortable heading into next season.

Thump: "Will D'Andrea be playing linebacker next year or Def. End?"

Given that we have more D-Linemen ready to play next year than LBs, by process of elimination I think D'A will play MLB.

Maybe they end up using him to Carpenter a little bit, but I'd still think his Exp. at MLB will help out a young LB corps.

I really like how they are using Carpenter on the end right now. That guy is quick is hell off of the ball.

I'm assuming in the NFL he will go back to the normal LB position instead of playing down so often.

Also, I guess I haven't payed close attention but when did Carpenter begin playing predominantly down?

BTW, did anyone else notice that he didn't hardly play any of the, I believe 2nd or 3rd quarter against Illinois?

The only LB I recall playing any decent amount of time in other than garbage time was Hawk, and we all know the reason why now. D'Andrea came in for a play in The Game in 2002 when Wilhelm came out for a stinger and then went back in, but other than that I don't recall seeing D'Andrea or Carpenter much other than in mop-up. I don't think anyone is saying our LB corps next year will be as good as this year's, or even really close, but keep in mind you're comparing next year's LB crop with arguably the best LB trio ever, not only in Ohio State history but college football history.

BayBuck: "Same could have been (and probably often was) said about Kudla coming into this season, but he's turned out to be fairly decent."

Mike Kudla's injury history has nothing to do with Mike D'Andrea's, and doesn't impact it in any way. There's no parallel to be drawn here, unless knee and back injuries are contagious.

Mili: "The only LB I recall playing any decent amount of time in other than garbage time was Hawk, and we all know the reason why now."

But that's my point. I haven't seen a Hawk, or a Diggs, or a Katzenmoyer behind the starters (even if it was just one guy) who'll be ready to step in and star next season. Could he be there? Sure. But I haven't seen it. For all those guys we mentioned, you knew this kid would be an impact player next season, regardless if he was a back-up as a freshman.

There's no way we can have a great season next year without a stand-out, Lombardi caliber LB somewhere. Not in this scheme. Look at our starters on D next year: there's not one guy on the entire defense that you can say right now will be an All-America candidate, or even know with some degree of certainty that he will develop into that.

"keep in mind you're comparing next year's LB crop with arguably the best LB trio ever, not only in Ohio State history but college football history"

No question about it. But trio aside, I'd still feel a lot better if we knew that we had a kid next year whose ready to take the leap.
