2004 Pre-Season Practice (official thread)

Yeah Ohiobuck94 it is a thankless job and I can remember Hanford Dixon of the Browns when he played corner. He got beat a couple of times and he said he just had to shake it off and move on. CB is one of your most dreaded positions to fill cause you feel like your on an Island out there all alone. In order to have balls to play that position, you better back it up because if you get beat or make a mistake - then you are left out in the cold and the armchair fans are comin after ya. Football fans can be pretty brutal and greedy at times.

thank god nobody owns the facts and can't premium them up. next thing you know we won't be able to refer to players by name since that is premium info from their parents licensed out to sucknuts.com.

boeckman put up some nice numbers, i wonder which string he did most of his damage against.

How did Boeckman get 34 passes off when Zwick and Smith only combined for 39 ?

Good question. You'd think they would try to get Zwick and Smith as many attempts as possible. The completion percentages look pretty good all the way around. Haw and Pittman seem to have done well. Wonder if they limited Ross to keep him healthy?

Thanks for the info. Obviously, all the stats are not in but it looks like the running game went well and that we focused on the short to intermediate passing game (which was a weakness last year).

Any info on how Ross and Hall did running the ball? How about sacks? Did anyone look good rushing the QB? :)

GO BUCKS :osu:

Football: Please don't ask us to explain the scoring system, but we do know the final score.
The offense retained the scarlet jerseys for the remainder of the football season with an 81-69 win over the defense in the jersey scrimmage in Ohio Stadium today.
We're just beginning to go through our notes on the scrimmage of OVER 170 plays, but for now, here are some of our quick impressions:
* The Buckeyes are loaded at middle linebacker. Both Anthony Schlegal and Mike D'Andrea played exceptionally well in the scrimmage. That was expected of Schlegal, but D'Andrea's play was a very pleasant surprise. The battle for playing time at middle linebacker is probably still not over.
* At quarterback, all three quarterbacks had their moments, both good and bad. All three threw one interception, but all three also showed they could move the football team. Justin Zwick moved the offense 80 yards to a touchdown on the first drive, but both Troy Smith and Todd Boeckman also showed the offense could move with either of them at the helm.
* Ted Ginn Jr. played both ways, but did not appear to be high on the depth chart on either side of the ball. Ginn played with the third-team defense and played sparingly on offense. Unofficially, he had one reception. The first team cornerbacks were Dustin Fox and E. J. Underwood. The second team corners were Ashton Youboty and Harlan Jacobs.
* The single biggest offensive play of the game was a run by Eric Haw, who turned the corner around left end and went down the west sideline for 35 yards before being tackled at the 16-yard line.
* Believe everything you have heard about Roy Hall being a power receiver. Hall simply refused to be tackled on several plays. It takes more than one DB to bring down Roy Hall after he catches the ball.
* The Buckeyes threw a lot of balls on quick routes, particularly to tight ends and h-backs. That was in response to the blitzing being done by the defense.
* Prior to the scrimmage, the Buckeyes conducted drills in the punting game. The Buckeyes are going to miss Andy Groom and B. J. Sander.
* Jason Caldwell may have found a home. Caldwell moved from tight to defensive end this year, and the big senior seemed to have a knack for harassing quarterbacks and made some plays in the game.
More to follow later.

My single biggest fear going into 2004 and it appears it's not getting any better. Tressel Ball will not work without a weapon at punter. Kick coverages teams hopefully are benefitting from all the depth and speed on this roster right now, we are going to need a stellar performance in this area.

results from both the spring game and the jersey scrimmage seem to indicate that the runnign game will be much improved with the additions of haw and pittman.

If I were a pessimist i would be concerned with our defensive front 7, since they haven't had much success stopping two freshman runnign backs, running behing an offensive line that it very young.

The offense scores points in typical fashion with touchdowns and field goals, but also gets one point for every first down and an extra point for plays in excess of 20 yards. The defense gets points for three-and-outs, negative plays, turnovers and defensive scores.

Hall and Ross each had 21 yds...Ross on 9 carries and Hall on 4

Nineteen different players caught passes

The first-team defense allowed the offense to score on the opening drive, but otherwise seemed solid

A.J. Hawk led the defense with 13 tackles and a sack(what a shocker). Mike D’Andrea had six tackles, including a sack, and an interception.

Defensive standouts wereTyler Everett (five tackles, one interception), Donte Whitner (five tackles), Marcus Freeman (six tackles, one sack, one caused fumble), Nate Salley (five tackles), Sirjo Welch (four tackles, one caused fumble), Bobby Carpenter (five tackles), Chad Hoobler (five tackles, one interception) and Schlegel (eight tackles).David Patterson had a pair of sacks, while Jason Caldwell, Quinn Pitcock (for a safety), Marcus Green, Joel Penton and Jay Richardson each had one.

sounds like Ross still isnt running very well. Good to hear about Hall though. Over 5 yards per carry and he isnt 100% yet

OSU offense shows signs of promise
COLUMBUS -- Perhaps the 2004 version of the Ohio State offense will have a bit more juice than last season's group.
Who would've thought that? The Buckeyes lost three of five starters up front, two-year starting quarterback Craig Krenzel, two receivers and a tight end. But that array of talent was rated the nation's 93rd best offense last season.
This year's group has new names with new talents, and dare we say better ability? It appeared so on Saturday as the offense beat the defense 81-69 in a contest with a scoring system that included points for first downs, three-and-outs, turnovers, touchdowns, field goals, etc.
The Buckeyes ran 177 plays, got a touchdown pass and an efficient performance from apparent starting quarterback Justin Zwick, and a touchdown run from possible backup quarterback Troy Smith to earn the Scarlet jerseys for the remainder of summer drills.
"We've got a long way to go, but we ran 177 plays today and got a lot of young guys got the experience of what it feels like to play (in Ohio Stadium)."
Tressel refused to discuss a pecking order when it came to his quarterbacks, with Zwick and Smith both vying for the starting job.
"As a coach you try not to have an opinion until you grade the film," Tressel said.
On the surface, Zwick seemed to run the majority of his plays with the No. 1 offense and against the No. 1 defense. He finished the day 14-of-24 for 116 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He also ran five times for 13 yards. His best drive of the day was the first one of the scrimmage.
Zwick engineered an 80-yard march, fueled it with three runs for 25 yards, completed all three of his pass attempts and capped it by scrambling out of trouble and throwing a 1-yard TD dart to Santonio Holmes through traffic in the back of the end zone.
"The offense took it right down on that first drive and got an 11-0 lead, that was good to see," Tressel said.
On the down side, he was sacked in the end zone for a safety, missed a wide open Holmes in the end zone on his final drive, and seemed to turn an ankle late in the scrimmage.
Smith had a tough start. At one point he had 10 carries for minus-17 yards. But the Glenville graduate improved as the day evolved. Smith wound up 12-of-20 passing for 89 yards and an interception. He also finished with 14 carries for 13 yards. Running the No. 2 offense against the No. 2 defense, Smith's one TD scoring drive began at the 50 and was bouyed by four of his runs for 30 yards. He capped it with a nine-yard scoring run around right end.
Third-string quarterback Todd Boeckman seemed to get the most snaps. He completed 21 of 35 passes for 191 yards with an interception. He played much of the time with the No. 3 offense and against the No. 3 defense, although he also took a few snaps with and against the No. 2s.
Defensively, safety Tyler Everett is now running with the No. 1 unit in place of Donte Whitner. Everett made a leaping interception of a Zwick pass. Also, linebacker Mike D'Andrea, who started with the No. 2 defense but also played with the starting unit, looked impressive picking off Troy Smith and collapsing Smith with a sack. Defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock sparkled as well up front.
