2004 Pre-Season Practice (official thread)

Do we view the lack of scoring TD's as a positive for the defense or do we become more concerned about the offense's effectiveness?

I think the default assumption has to be that the Defense is as good as we're expecting/hoping....

I also tend to think that the Defense has an advantage in these situations... In the sense that its tough for the Offense to catch them off guard... because anything they've practiced... the D has seen before.

I think I read somewhere that both Nuge and Huston made 2 FG's each and Nuge missed 2 long ones (50+). How many teams scored 26 pts on our D last year? Even if the O only put up 2 TD's they somehow scored more points, which is a good sign. I like the fact that the starting offense was good enough to drive 80 yards on the first drive and score on the starting defense.

I don't think I'm going to be able to make it 2 more weeks until the first game. Hurry up dammit!!!

Whoever said the defense had an advantage may have been more correct than most of use realize. This is the same offense we have been running for years and it is still under the same offensive coordinator. The defense is now under a different leader, and while he may keep the scheme the same it will be a different feel and how he calls the game may be different. I am glad to see the offense was able to move the ball. With so few touchdown reported (no official stats) but a high score by the offense, that leads me to believe there were alot of first downs and little things like that that would give the offense points.

On another note, I am glad to hear that D'Andrea is really turning heads. He came in with more hype and more impossed expectations than any player should. I am glad the coaches did not put any more pressure on him by playing him when he was not ready. We may have been better with D'Andrea playing over Pugac but if he struggled it might have been a bit harder for him to find the confidence to battle Schlegel for the starting spot this year. Let just hope for a big year from him.

O?

I agree that the offense showed some promise, especially in scoring on their first possession against the first team D.

However,

keep in mind that this was 177 plays run by OUR offense. They typically ran a little more than a third of that number in each game last year. With that in mind, the D's performance looks pretty good.

This is consistent with comments from Herbie and Fittie yesterday. They both said that the scoring system should be revamped becaused the D looked better than the O and still lost.

That's fine by me. Woody always said that he was worried whenever his offense was able to move the ball on his defense. About 3 months before he was fired, Earle mentioned that the offense was moving the ball well on the defense. Defense wins championships, whether it wins jersey scrimmages or not.

I haven't seen a whole lot about Tony Gonzo. I still think he could be the sleeper in this receiver group, simply because he has more under his belt than Lyons and Dukes, plus Childress has proven that he is about 1/10 as good in games as he is in practice. But it didn't look like Gonzo did a whole lot in this scrimmage. I wonder how much he actually saw of the field, and in which group?
