Game Thread (2004) Game Three: @ NCState - 9/18/04 (W, 3-0)

I like CFBnews.com, but for them to still rank FSU and TSUN ahead of us shows that they're in denial about those teams. Did they factor in the Stanford 37, BYU 10 score into what it means to get beat by ND?

And FSu had no offense and no heart during clutch time.

tisk tisk, shame on you all. This is tressel, this is justin zwick, this is mike nugent, simon frasier, aj hawk, bobby carpenter, quinn pittcock, and D'animal. This is santonio holmes and Roy Hall and Bam childress and Ted Ginn... We are playing a team that was GOOD as in NOT great last year but they just lost the best player the school has EVER HAD.. sure its on the road.. sure they have chuck amato, tremain hall, richard washington and derrik morris oh yea and TA mclendon... so what? WE ARE OHIO STATE! WE ARE THE BUCKEYES!

So we got a big head against marshall.. We still WON.. they havent even played a division one school yet.. I am NOT scared of this QB.. Both teams we have played so far had veteran senior QBs who could pick on our inexperience. I fully expect Ashton and EJ to be far more than adequate at covering these recievers now that they dont have a marksman like rivers throwing to them.. So that just leaves the running game which should be fine as well since we that will be what we key on this week.

Zwick is only going to keep getting better, Joe will be back and i expect that to make a HUGE difference in the running game. Plus, Pittman should be healthy and ready for some reps in this game as well. We will be fine. and I dont believe this game will be as close as last years or even last weeks game.

In Tressel we trust.

It's going to be a tuff, close, hard fought game. We really need to win the turnover and field position battle. I am optimistic that because they have a relatively young, inexperienced QB, that we will get one or two interceptions. Hopefully it will be inside the NCst 50 yd. line and we can play on a short field or maybe even take it to the end zone.

If our Defense or Special Teams can score a TD, that will go a long way in a close, hard fought game and definitely pump up the boys in scarlet & gray.

We also need someone to step up this week, like Holmes did last week, and be a big difference maker on Offense. You got to know that they will be double teaming Holmes every step along the way, and so R.Hall, Bam, Ginn or even Ross or Pittman need to become a big playmaker.

GO BUCKS!
Beat NCst!!

How much of our defense has Tressel kept close to the sweater vest until now?

 1. Marshall QB said that on the TD pass that "we called a play to run against the 2-deep zone they ran all day".
 2. NCSt receiver (Tramain?) was interviewed by Ian Fitzimmons today. He said that we run "a lot of zone" and that they were game planning for that.
Tress usually runs true to form, but throws a change up at a tough opponent at exactly the right time. These infrequent departures from the norm always surprise and usually work. Remember the wheel route to Clarett vs. Michigan in '02? How about the option to Mo Hall in that game?

The point here is that our defense, while not quite where it needs to be yet (17 plays right down the gullet are unacceptable); we could be in for a big play or 2 from the 'D' on Saturday.

Let's go Derek - suck it up. He "saw" OSU last year as well - from the sidelines.

Pack lineman eager to see OSU

Former N. Meck star signed with, but never played for Buckeyes

KEN TYSIAC

Raleigh Bureau

RALEIGH - Derek Morris missed out on a lot when he asked to be released from his scholarship at Ohio State in 2002.

He wasn't around as the Buckeyes went on to win the national title that season. He didn't get to play for Ohio State offensive line coach Jim Bollman, whom he admires as a person and a coach.

Morris joined N.C. State in January 2003. Even during August, when he knew Richmond was the first game on N.C. State's schedule, he couldn't deny his excitement about Saturday's game with Ohio State.

"To tell the truth, Ohio State is a really special game, just because I never got to play there," said Morris then.

It's a difficult week for him to be rehabilitating a sprained ankle. Although he is scheduled to start at right offensive tackle, he is listed as questionable and might not know until Saturday whether he will be able to play.

The injury is merely the latest setback in a career that has seen many.

A first-team USA Today and Parade All-American at North Mecklenburg High in 2001, Morris signed with Ohio State. But the school didn't rule him academically eligible in the fall of 2002.

He has said he wasn't allowed to practice because the NCAA was investigating him, though he won't discuss the reason for the investigation. He finally was released from his scholarship and enrolled at N.C. State. He broke a toe in preseason camp last fall and sat out a five-game NCAA suspension.

"Everything was so good coming out of high school and everything was on a good page and at the right pace," Morris said. "And all of a sudden, a real stop sign just came, and I really got frustrated."

Things finally turned around for him late last season. N.C. State coach Chuck Amato said it took time for Morris to learn the terminology and to succeed against strong, agile college defenders.

Morris started N.C. State's final five games. In the offseason, strength coaches Todd Stroud and Pat Meyer ran him so much that he hated running.

He kept doing it because they told him they saw the potential for something great in him. N.C. State's offseason conditioning program required players to run 20 110-yard dashes in a prescribed time, but Morris did more.

Before the conditioning runs, he got on the treadmill to run as much as a mile and a half. He would think about his goals as he did it.

"Derek, do you want to reach the ultimate goal?" he said he asked himself. "Do you want to be the best tackle in America? Do you want to be a first-round draft pick some day? You've got to go do this."

Then he would jump rope. And lift weights. And then he would join the team for the conditioning runs.

He got down to 327 pounds for preseason practice after he once carried 367 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame.

Morris has always had plenty of talent. His genes alone assured that. His father, Derek Morris Sr., played at Delaware State and attended minicamp with the New York Jets before playing in the Canadian Football League.

His uncle, Mercury Morris, rushed for 3,877 yards and won two Super Bowls in his career with the Miami Dolphins. His mother, Marilyn Morris, played volleyball as a youth.

They advised him to have fun and be the best, and he's finally doing that again. When he prays, he thanks God for giving him the opportunity to play with a great group of teammates.

If his ankle allows, he will play Saturday against the team he wanted to play for out of high school.

"That was something I really wanted to do and never achieved, and that hurts," Morris said. "So of course it's a special game to go play against them and show them what they missed out on and what N.C. State has."

I don't wish any ill will to Derek at all. I talked to him when he was here and he was a great kid. His mom was very nice and well spoken as well. I was sorry to see him go. I hope NC State wins lots of games with him at tackle. Just not this week.

NC State's picked to finish, what, 8th in the ACC? Something like that at their conference meetings a month ago.

If we can't beat them, then this is just a rebuilding year and we should not expect much.

I happen to think we're going to kick their ass.

ass kicking... I don't know about that. I think tOSU wins, and it would be nice to see Tuck get away from that two deep and maybe run a few more blitzes and some man free. Let Whitner take off a couple of heads and maybe get a pick.

I see big things from Roy Hall. NC State is going to key on Santonio which will free Roy up. I think the passing game is going to open up the running game this weekend.(It's usually the other way around) I just don't think the pack can keep up with our overall team speed. The defense is going to be keyed up after a letdown vs. Marshall. Hawk and the other members of "the BEST set of linebackers in the country" will keep TA in check.

OSU - 38

NC State - 13

one of the games of the week from collegefootballnews.com

Ohio State at North Carolina State- Are people really so silly that they do not think that North Carolina State is a top notch team? This team is absolutely loaded, particularly with Jay Davis stepping in at quarterback and looking so sharp early on. Of course, that was against Richmond, and this is a big step up. Justin Zwick is playing in his first road game as Ohio State quarterback, and they need only ask arch rival Michigan how first road games with new quarterbacks can go. Throw in that last year’s game was a classic, and this one has all the makings of being another instant classic. At season’s end, we’ll all look back at this game and realize it was a match-up of two top fifteen teams.
