Game Thread (2004) Game Seven: Indiana - 10/23/04 (W, 4-3/1-3)

I'm not joining the crowd on this one. It's not even 5 minutes into the second quarter and it's already been stated that no matter how good Smith plays today it still against Indiana. I can see where the poster that said it's a no-win situation for Smith. Play good - it was against Indiana. Play bad - I can't believe he couldn't get it done against Indiana. When you've lost three in a row a good game by anybody against any opponent and that person or team should get some credit for that game.

No one is saying that TS can't come out of this game looking good. Hell, we've completed passes to OUR players in the endzone. That in of itself is an immediate improvement.

What we can't claim, regardless of the outcome of this game, is that Troy Smith is going to be our savior. And that's exactly how he's going to be made out.

Towards the end, all some people saw were Zwick's mistakes. Right now, all some can see are Troy's successes.

Nice damn play Salley.

Anyway, who says we can't be excited about Smith, without taking it so far that we're building up unreasonable expectations for him? True, I feel no matter what he does this game, it's premature to call him our QB of the future. I don't know how saying that creates a no win.

Second overthrow to receivers that up until this week he probably hasn't had many reps with since the summer.

Exactly. So we can't get down on him for his mistakes, because this is his first start.

So if you accept that, how can you not accept the statement that provides balance to that. Which is that we also can't read too much into his successes?

Troy looks good so far. We look improved overall so far. That's great news. Certainly none of us wanted to look like the worst team in the Big Ten again this week. The only point being made here (even if some REALLY don't want to see it) is that it's going to take more than one game against one of the worst teams in the conference for us to really KNOW anything about Smith as a starter.

BUT we can enjoy it when he looks good, and continue to be cautiously optimistic about another opportunity for him to start next week.

Anyone making this a personal issue, hoping for the success of one player over another -- has a serious problem and is not really a fan of the team. They're a fan of the player first. My position is a little different. I don't care who the individual under the helmet is. I care how they play. We might as well be saying "QB10 is looking good this game. I hope he looks good next week too. I hope this is going to represent a real turning point in our offense -- but in order for that to happen, a TON of other things have to happen. Our OL has to improve. Our running has to improve. Our playcalling has to improve, and NONE of those things have anything to do with QB10."

Pro-Smith, Anti-Smith, Pro-Zwick, Anti-Zwick, fuck all that noise. Pro-Buckeyes period, or I don't know what people are doing here.
