Not alot of Texas Tech "W"s in this story ...

Alamo Bowl would be nice scenario for Tech

Sunday, December 5th 2004
URL: http://www.redraiders.com/stories/120504/foo_120504021.shtml

The Texas Tech football team will find out today where it will spend the postseason.

Depending on the final Bowl Championship Series standings, that destination could be as close as the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, as far as the Holiday Bowl in San Diego or as cold as the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. (remember the snowstorm in 2000?).

Only the BCS computer, which at this point seems more evil than the computer on the movie "WarGames," will decide Tech's fate.

But for Red Raider football players and fans, the choice should be easy. They should be salivating for a return trip to the Alamo Bowl.

Sure, the jaunt down south is very accessible for Tech fans throughout Texas, giving the Red Raiders a sizable crowd advantage. And sure, the thought of eating Mexican food and washing it down with a cold margarita, all while kicking back on the Riverwalk, sounds very enticing.

But the biggest reason Tech should want to go back to the Alamo Bowl is because of opportunity.

Rare is it when a football team gets a second chance. But a trip to San Antonio would give the Red Raiders a chance to redeem themselves twice for the price of one game.

First off, there's the issue of playing in the Alamo Bowl itself. Tech is 0-2 in postseason games played in San Antonio. The Red Raiders fell to Iowa 19-16 in the 2001 game in front of a mostly scarlet-and-black clad crowd of 65,232 — the second largest crowd in Alamo Bowl history. Tech was the underdog but came within a completed desperation pass at the final buzzer from pulling out the victory.

That wasn't the case in Tech's first trip to the Alamo Bowl, which ended in an embarrassing 27-0 loss, also to Iowa in 1996. That defeat started a string of four straight bowl losses for Tech that didn't end until it beat Clemson 55-15 in the 2002 Tangerine Bowl.

Another invitation to the Alamo Bowl this year would give Tech an opportunity to end the curse for good.

But that's not all the Red Raiders can amend with another trip to San Antonio. Ohio State already has accepted an invitation to play in the Alamo Bowl this season as the Big 10 Conference representative. A matchup against the tradition-rich Buckeyes is an exciting opportunity for any team.

For Tech, it would have deeper meaning.

Like their history in the Alamo Bowl, the Red Raiders are 0-2 all-time against Ohio State, with their most recent loss coming in the 2002 season opener by a score of 45-21. The Buckeyes went on to the win the national championship that year. In 1990, Ohio State edged Tech 17-10 in what also marked the opening game of the season for both teams.

What better way for the Red Raiders to end their losing streak against the Buckeyes than to do it at the Alamo Bowl? What better way for them to end their losing streak at the Alamo Bowl, than to do it against Ohio State?

Unfortunately, neither Tech players nor fans get to choose their fate. But if it does happen, if the Red Raiders are invited today to play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, consider it the perfect situation.

Two bowls for the price of one: the Alamo Bowl and the Revenge Bowl.

Where * I * go to eat on The Riverwalk

OK ... since many of you will be staying on The Riverwalk, I thought I'd let you know where I go to eat (since I live here). On wit da local flava:

Boudro's
http://www.boudros.com/boudros/

Once rated as one of the Top New Restaraunts in the US (with a menu and price tage to match), Boudro's is a great place to ... hang out and watch the tourists and tourist barges go by (I usually do this on Friday, after work). Get an outside table, preferrably riverside, and order the Guacamole for Two. Its a tableside guacamole made from scratch right before your eyes, much like a tableside caesar salad that many restaraunts offer. And it comes with a basket of fresh torilla chips. To go with it, I have a few Prickly Pear Margaritas.

Zuni Grill
http://www.zunigrill.com

Once in awhile on the weekend, I'll go down to The Riverwalk with the newspaper and stop by the Zuni Grill before the tourists wake up (I know its time to leave when I start to see people walking around with black socks, tennies, shorts, a white belt and an Alamo t-shirt). They have great breakfasts, to include that South Central Texas favorite - the Breakfast Taco (my fav is Papas e Chorizo). They also have a great lunch/dinner menu, and I usually order the Blue Corn Enchiladas (yum). Don't forget the forget the Cactus 'Rita.

Paesano's
http://www.paesanosriverwalk.com

A wonderful Italian/Mediterranean restaurant that relocated from a location in one of the city's older neighborhoods. The best place to get a pasta or pizza fix.

Biga on the Banks
http://www.biga.com/

Used to be in a big ol' house next to Paesano's before Paeson's moved Then they moved, too). One of my all-time favorite SA restaraunts ... but not for the faint of pocketbook. Bruce always has wild game on his menu, including venison and duck. The Salmon Nachos and Wild Game Packets with Asian Chili Sauces always make me drool. Biga has one of the best Sunday brunches in town. Any evening, you can reserve the Chef's Table (Table 31, with a view of the kitche) and enjoy a tasting menu prepared exclusively for your table (six, seven, or eight courses, perfectly paired with wines of your choice).

Next: Barbeque

After That: Tex-Mex and Mexican

OSU vs. OSU

Cowboys Accept Bid to MasterCard Alamo Bowl

December 5th, 2004
URL: http://www.okstate.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=1426&SPID=143&DB_OEM_ID=200&ATCLID=90044

STILLWATER, Okla.— Oklahoma State is heading for a familiar post season football destination in 2004. The Cowboys announced Sunday afternoon they had accepted a bid to play in the 2004 MasterCard Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

The game will be played Wednesday, December 29 at 7 p. m., (CST) in the Alamo Dome and the Cowboys will oppose Ohio State from the Big Ten Conference. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

It will be Oklahoma State's second appearance in the Alamo Bowl (1997) and OSU's third straight post season bowl appearance under head coach Les Miles.

"We are thrilled to accept an invitation to play in the MasterCard Alamo Bowl," said OSU Director of Athletics Harry Birdwell. "This is not only a tremendous reward for an outstanding football season but a compliment to our great fans who have shown such tremendous support throughout the 2004 season. We look forward to joining thousands of OSU faithful in San Antonio for this great bowl game."

The 2004 MasterCard Alamo Bowl will be Oklahoma State's 16th bowl appearance since the school's initial post season appearance at the 1945 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The Cowboys are 10-5 in their 15 previous bowl appearances.

For just the second time in school history, Oklahoma State is playing in a third straight bowl game. The Cowboys are coming off of the 2002 Houston Bowl and the 2003 SBC Cotton Bowl. OSU played in the 1983 Bluebonnet Bowl, the 1984 Gator Bowl and the 1985 Gator Bowl.

Oklahoma State will head for San Antonio with a final regular season record of 7-4 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 4-4. The Cowboys were ranked in the two major to 25 polls 10 of the last 11 weeks. OSU's regular season included non-conference wins over UCLA at the Rose Bowl and home field victories over Tulsa and SMU.

The Cowboys had Big 12 Conference road victories over Colorado and Missouri and home wins over Iowa State and Baylor.

Oklahoma State was led by an offense that featured tailback Vernand Morency who rushed for 1,454 yards on 250 carries and scored 12 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Donovan Woods had an outstanding rookie season, passing for 1,491 yards and rushing for 364 more. Woods had 10 rushing touchdowns and passed for
13 touchdowns in 2004.

O-State's leading receiver during the regular season was D'Juan Woods who had 29 receptions for 650 yards and six touchdowns. Woods was a second team All Big 12 selection after averaging 22.4 yards per reception.

Tight end Billy Bajema and offensive lineman Sam Mayes, both seniors, were the Cowboys' two consensus All Big 12 first team selections in 2004. Bajema had 18 catches for 264 yards and a touchdown. He is also being honored this week as a National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete as well as a first team Academic All American.

When the Cowboys face Ohio State in the MasterCard Alamo Bowl it will mark the second meeting, all time, between the two schools. OSU faced the Buckeyes in 1989 in Columbus with Ohio State taking a 37-13 win.

Ticket information for the 2004 MasterCard Alamo Bowl is available by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at OSU (1-877-ALL-4OSU). Tickets are also available by logging on to the official bowl web site at www. alamobowl. com.

Whats been going on in Stillwater

This should beat a great football game. I've waitied 12 years for the Buckeyes to come to San Antonio. OK about the opposition: Looking at the 2004 Oklahoma State squad, some *interesting things* have happened during the season ...

1) They whipped Colorado on October 9th 42-14.

2) They ALMOST beat Oklahoma, losing by a field goal 38-35 (at home).

3) Oklahoma State lost to Texas, but still managed to put up 35 points.

The Cowboys have a balanced offense, with a pretty darn good tailback in Vernand Morency (1,454 yards/12 TDs this season). Donovan Woods is their QB, a red shirted freshman who threw for 1,491 yards and 13 TDs while rushing for 10 more.

Their band sucks ... no contest there for TBDBITL, whatsoever.

:osu: Go Bucks !

The Alamo Bowl Buckeyes Discuss Oklahoma State Challenge
By Bucknuts.com Staff
Date: Dec 4, 2004

We have coments from Jim Tressel, Simon Fraser and Troy Smith on OSU's Alamo Bowl opponent, Oklahoma State. Plus, we take a look at the Cowboys. The game is set for Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Every year there seems to be drama with the Bowl Championship Series. Last year, Ohio State seemed headed to a rematch with Miami (Fla.) in the Orange Bowl. But when the parings were announced, OSU instead was shuffled off to the Fiesta Bowl to face Kansas State.

This year, it seemed that Cal would fill one of the two at-large berths in the BCS with unbeaten Utah taking the other. But when Texas moved by Cal into fourth place in the BCS standings – and accordingly assuring itself an at-large bid – the dominos began to fall.

Texas replaced Cal against Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Then, the Big 12’s bowl ladder changed as the Cotton selected Texas A&M and the Holiday got dibs on Texas Tech.

That left the Alamo Bowl to select Oklahoma State to face Ohio State in its game. This match-up of 7-4 teams will be played Wed., Dec. 29, at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

OSU coach Jim Tressel met with the media to discuss his team’s Alamo Bowl opponent.

“We thought it would be Texas Tech or Oklahoma State,” Tressel said. “It was a little bit according to what trickled down from the BCS situation. I guess Texas ended up getting in the BCS, which is great for them. We knew it would be one or the other.

“Oklahoma State is a very physical team, coached by an Ohio guy (Les Miles). It will be a great challenge.”

The Cowboys ran the ball 77 percent of the time this season.

“Everyone we’ve talked to in the Big 12 and that has played them says they are very physical and they have great athletes,” Tressel said. “They get after it. I’m sure it will be the opposite end of the spectrum from what Texas Tech’s attack would have been.”

Tressel was asked for what he knows about Miles.

“I’ve known Coach Miles for a lot of years,” Tressel said. “He is an Ohio guy who coached at Michigan for a while. He’ll have some built in feel for Ohio State. I have admired the job he’s done since he’s been at Oklahoma State. It seems like every year they get a little bit better. Every year, they seem to do something that gives them a chance to take another step.”

OSU quarterback Troy Smith said he recalls watching Oklahoma State on television earlier this year.

“I know it’s a worthy opponent,” Smith said. “I know they’re going to be up for the challenge and so are we. Just getting a chance to go out and play a game and rekindle the fire we had against Michigan, we want to end this season on a positive note.”

Defensive end Simon Fraser said he was glad to finally have an opponent to prepare for.

“We were preparing for both (OSU and Texas Tech),” he said. “Now it brings the story to a different aspect because now we know who we’re playing. It’s real difficult to go to practice and not know who we’re preparing for.”

Fraser said the Buckeyes must prepare for the challenge of facing OSU back Vernand Morency, who rushed for 1,454 yards and scored 12 touchdowns this year.

“We know there will be a challenge in front of us,” he said.

Also Notable

* OSU kicker Mike Nugent, named the team MVP earlier Sunday, will learn if he is selected as the Lou Groza Award winner at a function Tuesday night. He will also participate in the College Football Awards Show Thursday.

* Tressel discussed his team’s schedule for the rest of the week.

“We’re going to be in final exams, so through Wednesday it will be very little other than some running and lifting,” said Tressel, who will head to San Antonio Thursday for a media event. “Then on Thursday, we’ll get back after it a little bit.”
