The Texas Tech football team will find out today where it will spend the postseason.
Depending on the final Bowl Championship Series standings, that destination could be as close as the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, as far as the Holiday Bowl in San Diego or as cold as the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. (remember the snowstorm in 2000?).
Only the BCS computer, which at this point seems more evil than the computer on the movie "WarGames," will decide Tech's fate.
But for Red Raider football players and fans, the choice should be easy. They should be salivating for a return trip to the Alamo Bowl.
Sure, the jaunt down south is very accessible for Tech fans throughout Texas, giving the Red Raiders a sizable crowd advantage. And sure, the thought of eating Mexican food and washing it down with a cold margarita, all while kicking back on the Riverwalk, sounds very enticing.
But the biggest reason Tech should want to go back to the Alamo Bowl is because of opportunity.
Rare is it when a football team gets a second chance. But a trip to San Antonio would give the Red Raiders a chance to redeem themselves twice for the price of one game.
First off, there's the issue of playing in the Alamo Bowl itself. Tech is 0-2 in postseason games played in San Antonio. The Red Raiders fell to Iowa 19-16 in the 2001 game in front of a mostly scarlet-and-black clad crowd of 65,232 — the second largest crowd in Alamo Bowl history. Tech was the underdog but came within a completed desperation pass at the final buzzer from pulling out the victory.
That wasn't the case in Tech's first trip to the Alamo Bowl, which ended in an embarrassing 27-0 loss, also to Iowa in 1996. That defeat started a string of four straight bowl losses for Tech that didn't end until it beat Clemson 55-15 in the 2002 Tangerine Bowl.
Another invitation to the Alamo Bowl this year would give Tech an opportunity to end the curse for good.
But that's not all the Red Raiders can amend with another trip to San Antonio. Ohio State already has accepted an invitation to play in the Alamo Bowl this season as the Big 10 Conference representative. A matchup against the tradition-rich Buckeyes is an exciting opportunity for any team.
For Tech, it would have deeper meaning.
Like their history in the Alamo Bowl, the Red Raiders are 0-2 all-time against Ohio State, with their most recent loss coming in the 2002 season opener by a score of 45-21. The Buckeyes went on to the win the national championship that year. In 1990, Ohio State edged Tech 17-10 in what also marked the opening game of the season for both teams.
What better way for the Red Raiders to end their losing streak against the Buckeyes than to do it at the Alamo Bowl? What better way for them to end their losing streak at the Alamo Bowl, than to do it against Ohio State?
Unfortunately, neither Tech players nor fans get to choose their fate. But if it does happen, if the Red Raiders are invited today to play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, consider it the perfect situation.
Two bowls for the price of one: the Alamo Bowl and the Revenge Bowl.
