Game Thread (2004) Bowl Game: MasterCard Alamo Bowl - Oklahoma State - 12/29/04 (W, 8-4/4-4)

Bizarre that it doesn't include football. Although the more I think about it, I guess I understand why. Also doesn't include, and no one laugh, but we are basically the lock for a championship every year here, synchro swimming.

Hard to talk up synchro on a football forum, lol, but we have had 24 national championships in the past 28 years in that arena alone.

That is dominance, even if you're just gracefully thrashing around in the water.

So should we sound off here if we're going? I'm in -- tickets are already bought -- gotta find out my exact section number. Looks like I'll be staying in Austin with friends there who are going to the game with me, but we'll definitely be spending a few evenings down in SA with the rest of the Buckeye faithful.

Is anyone else DRIVING down from Columbus? :2004:

I'm pretty sure the reason it doesn't have football is b/c the NCAA doesn't actually do the football stuff. It is a different organization.

And the fact that most of the football championships are "mythical" b/c pretty much any team could claim a national championship. I think a few years 3 schools have a national championship. Ok State should have one b/c we went undefeated, but our school didn't claim one for one reason.

It's true any team can claim one, but there are obviously years where there's really no dispute about who the top team is. It would be interesting to go through some time and measure how many teams could claim inarguable titles for football. I don't think there would be that many.

Ya, I totally agree. That would be a great thing to look up. But I'm to lazy!

Ok, I have a link...

Good post. Just hope that Teddy Ginn never has a shot at a punt return, b/c as you probably know he's deadly. Tied the NCAA single season record for punt return TD's in a season- he only started returning punts HALFWAY THROUGH THE SEASON! I'll be in S.A. and am sure it'll be a great game.

During Okie St's last six games, they gave up 31+ points four times (including giving up 42 second-half points to Texas) while being held to 20 points or less in three of those games.

As for us, the offense has come to life under Smith's leadership during the last game and a half. In the second half of the Purdue game, only two turnovers deep in Boilermaker territory kept the offense from scoring more than the 14 points it did...and those turnovers were great lessons for Troy. The offense then proceeded to score 30 points on Michigan, and should've scored 11 more on those two first-and-goal-from-the-two situations. On the defensive side, they've been superb when Snyder has decided not to play soft zone and instead play close man-to-man and turn up the heat on the rush.

I think we can handle Okie St, especially if we play ball like we did the last six quarters of the season.

BBQ in San Antonio

If y'all are coming down for The Alamo Bowl, ya gotta have some Texas Barbeque. Barbeque is a hallowed thing here in the Lone Star State, not to be taken lightly. Some Texans think cooking with BBQ sauce is a sin. Others swear by it. Anyway you look at it, San Antonio is a great place for carnivores. And BTW: we call charred cow flesh Brisket (not tri-tip - sorry Caleefornians).

There are four big barbeque places in town (not counting the Bill Miller chain; that would be akin to saying Taco Bell is a Mexican restaraunt), and countless smaller ones:

Tom's Ribs
http://www.tomsribs.com/

My favorite, located either at Vance Jackson & I-410, Nacadoches Road, or Stone Oak Parkway. Tom Norris' Baby Back Ribs are to die for. If y'all have a bigger appetite than I do, go for the The Big 3: Baby Back Ribs plus your choice of two other meats (smoked brisket, BBQ chicken, smoked turkey breast or smoked sausage). Get out the plastic bib.

County Line
http://www.countyline.com/index.asp

Good stuff, Maynard. You can find County Line restaraunts across Texas, and there are two locations in San Antonio. One is on The Riverwalk (next to the Hard Rock Café), within walking distance of you Buckeye Fans staying at a hotel on the river. Same kind of thing on the menu, with the gut-buster being the Five Meat Smokehouse Combo. The County Line uniquely ships its ribs worldwide (http://www.airribs.com/).

Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q
http://www.rudys.com/index.html

There are Rudy's Bar-B-Q restaraunts throught Texas (one in Lubbock, where that other team is from) and some in New Mexico. Two of 'em are in San Antonio, one near SeaWorld (west side of town), and the other in Leon Springs (on I-10, just north of town). I love their Smoked Turkey and Cream Corn. While the Tom's Ribs and The County Line are traditional sit-down restaurants, Rudy's features cafeteria-style BBQ: you order whatever you want by the pound, throw in a few sides, a cold beer or two, and head for the picnic tables outside (yes, you can sit inside, too).

Grady's Bar-B-Q
http://www.gradysbbq.com/

Hometown born 'n raised, Grady's has been serving BBQ in San Antonio since 1948. There are six of to shoose from, and I usually go to Grady's Texas Star Inn on Bandera Road (northwest part of town), and the one on South Zarzamora is close to where I work. You can order by the pound at Grady's, or choose from their list of Specialty Plates. While not BBQ, I like their Catfish Dinner (when I feel like eating healthy). Don't forget the cold beer.

Next: Tex-Mex and Mexican

I love it when intelligent fans make their way over here to discuss a game...especially just after the matchup announcement. It's obvious that you are all pretty passionate about the Cowboys. I was rooting for Ok. State against OU, so I know how good your offense can be even against a good defense...and ours definately has more holes than in the past. We know Morency and D'Jaun Woods are stars, but the X factor for your offense (as well as ours) in this game is going to be the play of the quarterback (Donovan Woods/Troy Smith) once the play starts to break down. We can't run, and it will be hard for you to run once our team starts to key on Morency...so containing the QB on third down will be a HUGE priority. I believe Donovan has 10 rushing TD's on the year, and Troy Smith sliced up the M*ch*gan defense.

I think the game will be decided when we have the ball because you've mentioned that your defense has trouble on third down, and we struggled to convert on third (or any other down) most of the season. If our offense plays like it did against M*ch*gan, I like our chances. I really think we will have to put up at least 24 points to stay with you. I feel a little better knowing that Tressel historically saves his best performances and game plans for the scUM and Bowl games (Miami, K-State). This matchup worries me a lot more than T. Tech would have because they are all finesse and you guys have the potential to physically beat up a team.

I'm really glad you all decided to join, and I hope at least a few of you will decide to stay on regardless of the result. We already have a few good fan contributors from USC as well as an ND fan and a couple crap eating scUMmers...but it's great to hear outside opinions about our Buckeyes. You'll find that many of us wear scarlet colored glasses :) . I think the biggest adjustment will be saying OK. State and Ohio State rather than tOSU...which we are used to doing.

How nice is it to see some upcoming opponents come visit us for some good discussion and football talk. Glad to have you here, Cowboys. I'm really looking forward to the game. With the improvement our Buckeyes have shown in the second half of the season, they should be ready to go and make it a good game against your guys.
