#20 Iowa 67, #7 Ohio State 60 (Final)

Bruener is a hack. Good baller, but still a hack.

We had our chances. I thought we lost our legs after the PSU game. Not anymore.

Great tourney for JJ. We have many to pick up when other can't. J'Kell lost his shot but continues to play great D. Good minutes for Ivan. Held the hack down for the most part.

Can't wait for the Dance. Here's to the Big Ten Champs.:osu:

I hate these damn conference tournaments. Can't say it enough.

If we end up a two seed in Bumfuck, Egypt and going up against a Kentucky while Iowa goes to Minneapolis and plays Little Sisters of the Poor I will be beyond pissed.
cool
EDIT: to make this post soemthing other than a waste... we'll take some time off here and find our shot.. we're going to need it along with hitting free throws

So you would be fine with these same officials in the Big Dance?
yes, b/c we'll actually have a backup center, instead of forcing dials to play scared in the second half. His second half fouls were cheap, stupid fouls, not bogus calls. But for the love, we lost this game b/c we didn't execute, not b/c the refs have it out for us.
I realize... Its just the guy cant be a complete incompetent to not be a warm sizable body? Make baldy's life a little rough down under. If he gets in foul trouble, whoopy. I just wish there was a way he could contribute more.
bell seems to be more of a perimeter big man, and he has not looked comfortable doing anything this season. I definitely don't want him on the floor during our quest for a 1 seed and big ten tourney. All of our key contributors have taken huge strides from last year. I look for Bell to do the same in the future.

Bingo. After the past week, everyone should have seen this one coming...it was only a matter of time until the opponent made the plays needed when given the opportunity.
can't say i disagree, though i will add that with a bench that consists of exactly THREE players, one of whom is hurt, it's only a matter of time before the kids run out of gas... not to mention having to play soft due to foul troubles...

the fact is, Matta did a phenomenal job this season, the kids played over their heads all year, and exceeded our wildest expectations...

hopefully the break will give them a chance to catch their breath, so to speak, and give them and edge in the Tourney... at first i was a little miffed that we got the 'Nova bracket instead of Memphis's, but then i realized that the Memphis bracket would have us playing the first round on Thursday, and that extra day of rest could be VERY helpful...

If the officials are as visible as they were today, then there were either a ton of close calls or they were horrible. I didn't see very many close calls out there. They called so many phantom fouls (many on Iowa), and missed so many obvious ones. That's unacceptable in a Big Ten Championship game. Unacceptable.

Still didn't lose the game for the Bucks. I don't understand the fear Matta had with playing Dials down the stretch even with the fouls. And when Dials did get in, we neglected him. When you're in a scoring drought, you go to your Big Man MVP. We didn't do that and we deserved to lose.

Iowa plays great defense. They made adjustments in the second half that flustered our perimeter players. It seemed as if the only points we could score were garbage, and didn't come from any set play. They had us scrambling on offense.... but...

We don't move on offense. You could see the difference when you watch Iowa on offense, constantly moving and setting screens. Our guys just stand around jerking off, waiting for Jamar to make something happen.

Oh please...give the Iowa defense more credit than that. Also, it was our third game in three days and we were only playing 7 guys.
well, i won't go quite as far as StadiumDorm, but the guys WERE just standing around in the last 10 minutes like they had no clue what to do... yes, i realize that Iowa plays good D, BUT they aren't the freaking '96 Bulls for Pete's sake!

ONE point in 7+ minutes is just ridiculous.

BTW, it was Iowa's third game in 3 days too. i know they are deeper, but the point is still valid.

Say what you will, this is a moment for pause. Truly. This game really meant nothing, as far as the big dance is concerned. It would have been GLORIOUS if we had won this game. But, It does seem to put the next game in to a certain perspective doesn't it? This is where it counts. This is where people start to detract. Likely, we will win the first game. The next will be a bit tougher. So....What do we say now. This is a team that connot hold up to the scrutiny of the NCAA Selection Committee? Or, do we say that we forge ahead, find a way to break the other guy down and win, or do we give it up in the first or second round? This is where our metal will be tested! This is where we draw a line in the sand. Where we distinguish ourselves from everyone else in the tournament. Again, this is where, as Buckeyes, we raise our spears, and rattle our Shields! This is where we decide whether or not we do or die. This is where we decide whether or not to BE champions. It is a fight. To the death. As it will always be if you are a Buckeye. But, it is a fight that can only be won if the entire nation is standing behind it. Kill them all, and be wary of anyone standing in our path.

Senior lifts Iowa to Big Ten title

Horner's 14 points in the second half conquer Buckeyes

By Cliff Brunt

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Iowa's Jeff Horner was tired of coming up short, so he did something about it.

The Hawkeyes lost in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals last season, then finished second in the regular-season race this year. On Sunday, Horner finally came out on top.

The senior guard scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and added 10 assists as No. 20 Iowa beat No. 7 Ohio State 67-60 in the Big Ten tournament championship game.

Horner didn't score until 4 seconds remained in the first half.

``It was tough getting loose,'' he said. ``I got that shot before the half and we got some momentum going into the locker room. In the second half, when they needed me to score, I was there.

``And other guys did a great job of finishing.''

Iowa earned a No. 3 seed in the Atlanta Regional,

The Hawkeyes will play 14th-seeded Northwestern State on Friday in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Adam Haluska added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes (25-8), who won their first conference tournament since 2001. Iowa extended its winning streak to five games and ended Ohio State's winning streak at seven.

Jamar Butler had 19 points and J.J. Sullinger added 15 for the top-seeded Buckeyes (25-5), who fell short in their quest to win both the regular season and tournament titles.

Ohio State earned a No. 2 seed in the Minneapolis Regional and will play 15th-seeded Davidson in the first round Friday in Dayton.

Ohio State's Terence Dials, the conference player of the year, had 10 points and nine rebounds despite playing only 22 minutes because of foul trouble.

``I'm the type of player that needs to play 30 (minutes) for this team to be really successful,'' he said. ``I think our guys did a pretty good job of playing when I wasn't out there. In the second half, (Greg) Brunner, (Erek) Hansen, Alex Thompson, those guys just started to wear on us a little bit.''

The fact that Ohio State stayed in the game without him is one reason Dials believes the Buckeyes are a threat to win the national title.

``That's the beauty of our team,'' he said. ``Our first seven guys can score 20 points at any time.''

Dials went out with his fourth foul with 5:24 left and Ohio State leading 57-55. The Buckeyes led the entire second half until Brunner scored after rebounding two of his misses to tie the game at 57. The Hawkeyes took the lead on a layup by Horner, then Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 2:56 left to give Iowa a 62-57 lead.

Horner scored on a short jumper with 2:02 left to give Iowa a 64-57 lead.

Ohio State scored only one more basket, a three-point play by Dials.

Dials picked up his second foul with 12:17 left in the first half and Ohio State leading 14-12. Two 3-pointers by Je'Kel Foster helped the Buckeyes extend their lead to 22-15. Iowa responded with a 10-5 run that included seven points by Brunner.

Butler scored six points in a 7-0 run that gave the Buckeyes a 34-25 lead and forced an Iowa timeout. Iowa bounced back with a 6-0 run to cut its deficit to 34-31 with 2:13 left in the half.

Horner, who averaged 20 points in his first two tournament games, didn't score until he hit a runner right before the half that cut Ohio State's lead to 37-34. He was proud that the Hawkeyes were able to come back.

``It's sort of like we're always the underdog,'' he said. ``But we just keep doing it.''

The Buckeyes made four 3-pointers in the first half, allowing coach Thad Matta to keep Dials on the bench until the start of the second half. Dials played only eight minutes in the first half.

Ohio State won't focus on the loss, or the fact that the Buckeyes might have lost out on a No. 1 seed, guard Ron Lewis said.

``We don't take nothing from that, we just keep moving on. We're going to go out and play our same game every game and keep going on and playing hard,'' he said.
