#17 Ohio State 94, #22 Michigan 85 (final)

jwinslow,

Matta plays a 4 out 1 in system. Ohio State does not have a PF this year. Sylvester is not their PF. We would be undersized with Lewis at 6'4, but like I said before Lewis is two times the rebounder Sylvester is, so it really wouldn't matter.

have you seen Dials pass the ball out of a double team effectively? not often... but he's still starting.

Who is going to guard a 6-9 forward?

Sylvester defended him, and he took one shot, and only grabbed three boards (despite being their leading rebounder).

I agree with you on your comments. Dials does a poor job passing out of the double team. Sullinger would guard a 6'9 forward, hes been doing it all year, and has been quite effective.

I really like Lewis and he can do it all

wow Butler is really coming on as a PG
I see him being the best PG at OSU in some time .He will be better then Penn by time he's a senior. A true player at PG with speed, vision and outside shooting.

how many 3's 14 or more.Thats nuts having a team capable of doing that in a game.
Matta is such a great coach and I can't wait til next year with all those great shooters and having ODEN dominating inside. That should be illegal. lol

what about on defense? And would lewis be twice the rebounder sylvester is if he is being boxed out by Michigan's monstrous forward?

sullinger forced some shots tonight, and got benched for it (or so it seemed). edit: perhaps not with those stats.

Nope, according to ESPN.

Stop the presses. I think ESPN got that one right. :wink2: I didn't see him at all, either.

Boy, scUM sure as hell helped us by not giving it to Sims late in the game. I'm sure alot of that was better defense, but on several possessions, they didn't seem even to look for him.

Horton was not particularly good tonight. I'm okay with that.

Tough, tough break for Dion Harris. He was great early on in the game and seemed to be the only real threat from outside.

Butler was terrific. The mid-range jumper he hit with the shot clock running down was huge! A couple of outstanding drives for layups, too.

Je'Kel continued his hot shooting, even though he only took a couple the entire second half. More great defense and solid passing.

I think we only had 6, maybe 7, turnovers the entire game. I would put that as reason number 1 why we won this game.

*ichigan sucks!

Sullinger did get benched down the stretch, but it wasnt for forcing shots. He was 5-7, 3-3 from 3 point land, and finished with 13 points. Not exactly forcing shots in my opinion.

And would lewis be twice the rebounder sylvester is if he is being boxed out by Michigan's monstrous forward?

In a 4 out 1 in system it is very hard to box out, that would not be an issue.

Great points Smitty. I'm not sure how you can argue that Sylvester should be gaining more P.T. 10 foot airball jump shots, and sloppy ballhandling do not warrant more playing time in my book.

The argument that Sylvester should stay in based on defense is questionable at best. He's tall, but lacks half the athleticism of Lewis..........or even Harris for that matter.

Mayes was out due to an injury from Tuesday's practice.

Ivan Harris came up big in the first half. His offensive contributions put the spark in our offense. I believe he hit the first three.

When their kid went out with the ankle (Harris?), Michigan never seemed to recover.

In the last five minutes, we played very well. Imagine if we had finished like that against Indiana, Michigan State and Iowa? This team is learning.

Matta and his staff deserve a lot of credit on their homework and game preparation. Iowa destroyed Michigan in their last game from the perimeter. And did you see the defense they played when Michigan came out of that time-out midway through the second half? Dials stepped in front of the entry pass after Michigan tried a screen. It looked like a designed play and Dials was in position to intercept the pass. That's great coaching!

Nice match-up on Sunday. Our perimeter offense (tops in the Big Ten) against Illinois perimeter defense (tops in the Big Ten). This came from Bruce Weber on ESPN after the game.

how many times did you notice sylvester out of position on D tonight? I saw Dials/Twigs get beat a lot, I didn't notice Sylvester hardly at all. I also saw him create 3-4 turnovers and notch a few blocks. He forces it at times on offense, but also creates great things on offense.great idea (a 6'4" PF?!!!). We definitely could afford to become even smaller

Here was Syl's line tonight.

M. Sylvester,
27 Minutes, 3-10 FG's, 2 Reb's, 4 Assists, 3 fouls, 6 points

1 Steal, 1 blocked shot.

Not exactly a chaotic night defensively.

sylvester is a SF playing PF. If the bucks had another player like DIALS to HELP HIM. THEY WOULD BE A TOP 5 TEAM

Thats there main problem only having one big guy down low Just think of all those great shooters and drivers with a couple DIALS down low. to have an inside game so dominatent that would make them even more dangerest to score

I could never remember the buckeyes having anyone or more then 2 players shooting a high average from the 3's. This team has 6 that can do it in any game.

I forgot to add that this was a HUGE win for the Bucks tonight. There is nothing sweeter than going into Ann Arbor and winning......especially against a good Michigan ballclub. I said it earlier, this team has emerged a favorite to win the Big 10 this year.

Excellent analysis.

This team is continuing to learn and grow, and I'm loving watching every mnute of it.

I for one was not concerned in the least bit being down 21-8 early in the game.

What did we do? Go on a 21-8 run ourselves to come back.

Give the kids a lot of credit sticking this one against a quality opponent and in a hostile environment.

The game Sunday against the Illini is going to be huge!

Lewis would get destroyed at the other end of the floor by this physical specimen. Sylvester did a good job muscling him away from the basket when he got the ball early in the game. Maybe some games we could go small, but I just don't see it working against this lineup

Not exactly a chaotic night defensively.
Stats don't tell the full story. He stole the ball, dunked it, then on the next possession tipped the ball away and butler ended up with the steal.

JWinslow, we're watching different games I guess.....neither is good, but when I watch Matt on D, im either seeing a lazy defender who continually gets out a step late, or hes just slow and gets beat....whenever hes in zone and the ball is on his side you can count on penetration b/c as he comes out, it takes one pump fake and hes out of bounds as the ball goes to the hoop....

Me and Billmac were watching the same game. Sylvester played REAL decent out high (loved watching that huge block on the fast break), but down low guarding the 4 and playing help defense, he was terrible. I shouldn't even say he played help defense, because he wasn't helping. When Dials/Twigs would get beat by his man, Sylvester should be crashing down on the guy... and I didn't see him do it ONCE the entire game.

If you see a replay the drive where Sims tips the ball THREE times at the hoop (getting it on the fourth try), you'll see Sylvester right in front of him on the third tip- not trying at all to block Sims out, go for the ball OR the foul to stop him, nothing. Call it laziness, call it lack of intensity, effort, or technique, but Sly played terrible defense down low tonight. EDIT: and it wasn't just on that play either! It was like that the whole night. Watch the tape

I mean, we played terrible down low D for 3/4 of this game AS A TEAM, but if Sly is going to be guarding a big man down low, he HAS to play better D than he did tonight (and Dials/Twigs certainly didn't help him tonight). They got WAY too many easy buckets tonight.

Butler's career-high leads Ohio State past Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) ---- Jamar Butler scored a career-high 20 points to lead Ohio State (No. 17 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) to a 94-85 victory over Michigan (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) on Thursday for the Buckeyes' first win at Crisler Arena since 2002.

The victory moved Ohio State into a three-way tie with Michigan State and Illinois for second place in the Big Ten. The three teams trail Iowa by a half-game.

Courtney Sims had 26 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Wolverines (16-5, 6-4), who lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Chris Hunter's three-point play gave Michigan a 73-70 lead with 8:45 to play, but Ohio State (17-3, 6-3) answered with a 14-2 run, during which it was 7-for-7 from the field, to go ahead for good.

The Wolverines led 21-8 early in the game before the Buckeyes (17-3, 7-3) heated up. Ohio State hit 12 of 16 3-pointers in the first half, including nine of its last 10, and led 49-43 at the half.

The Buckeyes' 15 3-pointers were their most this season and marked the second time in as many games Michigan surrendered more than 10. Iowa made 13 3-pointers in Saturday's 94-66 win over the Wolverines.

Je'kel Foster added 17 points for the Buckeyes, who also got 14 from Ron Lewis and 13 from J.J. Sullinger.

Michigan guard Dion Harris had 14 points before spraining his right ankle midway through the second half. The Wolverines also were without swingman Lester Abram, who missed his second straight game with an injured left ankle.

Daniel Horton had 15 points and 10 assists for Michigan and Ron Coleman scored 15 points.
