#15 Oral Roberts vs #2 tOSU, Fri 3 ET on CBS

Hey trying to keep some positivity....
Here's some positivity: I'm positive Holtmann needs to improve. Today wasn't the first time I've seen a poor performance by him and his staff. The decision in regulation to inbound the ball to Brick Washington and let him dribble out the time and take the last shot when he had been horrid all half was one of the worst decisions I've seen a coach make. It was like schoolyard basketball. They didn't need a coach with a whiteboard for that. Yet he gets paid pretty well to draw up these Mensa-level plays.

I don't know about "lots" since today's 2 v 15 loss rarely happens, but the undefeated defending champions losing the title game in 1961 stung.

The Bucks were ranked #1 the entire season before losing to the team now known as the Juggalos.
True, it doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen. And I know it isn't much comfort, but was this team really a #2 seed? They were 21-9 with a 3-5 (now 3-6) record over the last month. Yeah, this is a weird year with the COVID crap, but do any of us think this was one of the 8 best teams in the country? I didn't. In the history of 2/15 tourney upsets, I'd say this was one of the least surprising.

If they shot their season avg at the stripe (76.3%) they would have made 5 more points (rounding down), enough to win
If they shot their season avg of 3s (36.5%), they would have scored 9 more points (rounded down), enough to win
If they turned it over at their season average (11), they probably would have won.

But all three below average? An overtime loss.

Both teams had 18 free throws. Bucks only made 9. Oral Roberts made 14 and that (77%) was below their nation's-best 82% for the season.

ORU was actually well below their three-point shooting percentage at 31% today. They usually hit 39% yet they won anyway. :bonk:

Totally agree....And on top of that to come out an basically say they wanted it more is just BS.....your job is to prepare and motivate your players. If someone isn’t getting it done then pull them and put someone else in.

2011 UK. Not embarrassing, but worse. That was the best team in the country, better than the '07 squad, and should've made the FF at worst. Still not over thst night.

But that Kentucky team reached the Final Four. The next season they won the championship.

Oral Roberts will lose their next game and won't come close to ever winning a championship.

The Bucks played an awful, awful game across the board. Just totally lethargic, sloppy, boneheaded...any other lousy descriptors you can plug in there. Frankly, they were lucky to get to overtime given how awful they played. They made the worst defense in the country look like the best UVA Pack Line defense.

If ORU would have hit their season average in free throws, they would have made 1 more (rounding up)
I'm not looking up the 3s numbers, but I'm going with 31% or 39% would not have made that much of a difference. If both teams hit those averages, OSU wins.

For me the turning point came midway through the first half. Ohio State led 23-15 and ORU had 4 straight empty possessions - could've pushed the lead into double figures.

Instead the Bucks had 8 empty possessions out of 9 and ORU went on to outscore OSU 21-10 the rest of the half.

Ohio State, a No. 2 seed, drew No. 15 seed Oral Roberts in the first round of the Big Dance and Lundardi believes the guard play of the Golden Eagles will be too much for the Big Ten side.

"Give yourself a gold star if you know that the nation's leading scorer, Max Abmas, plays for the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, scoring about 25 points per game," Lunardi said. "ORU can play and the victim is going to be Ohio State. Believe it or not, a 15 beating a 2, it's happened eight times in the tournaments previous 35 years. Why not nine? Somebody has to shock the world. I think it's Oral Roberts."

Adding insult to injury is that this buttmunch called it. :ohbrother:

Yep. I knew the Bucks were in trouble when they didn't blow it open when ORU went ice cold. Just kept settling for jumper/brick after jumper/brick instead of attacking them inside or slashing to the rim. I still though they'd pull it out at that point, but figured it'd be too close for comfort. I was pretty sure we were sunk by about 6 minutes into the 2nd half when they just couldn't pull away, or even get a lead for that matter. Such a frustrating game.

A few comments:

1. This team (and the players) have been streaky and inconsistent all season, and this game was no different. Unfortunately in this game they just weren't playing their best (or even close to it).

2. I don't know the personality of any of the players; but I'm sure at "crunch time" some of the players didn't really want to take that "crunch time shot" for fear of missing it. As Coach McGinty told Shane Falco: "Winners always want the ball when the game's on the line." This is true in basketball too. Washington is a "winner", he carried the team through a lot of games this year. I really don't begrudge him for wanting to take the "important late in the game" shot(s).

3. I do believe that Liddell (unsuccessfully) tried to win the B1G Conference Championship Game. He missed on a couple threes and had a real bad turnover. I'm guessing that (just maybe) he was hesitant to try to singlehandedly win the game again and deferred that to Washington.

4. With all that being said, I have no idea what plays Holtmann called, who he wanted to attempt the late game shots, and/or what his opinion is about Washington handling the ball and shooting was. If Holtmann is guilty of anything (in my humble opinion) it is not mentally preparing this team for ORU. The team looked good in the B1G Tournament, read all their clippings, was a 16 point favorite over ORU, and probably thought they would easily win in blowout. They weren't mentally ready for a hard fought game.

To be honest I still can't believe Washington missed that final 3 point shot. He was as wide open as anyone ever could be for a game tying 3 point attempt. Justin took a wild horrible 3 that banked off and came back to him and he dished to a wide wide open Washington who I bet hits that shot 70% of the time just not that time. It is rough to relieve over and over all the things that went wrong from the point of up 4 points at the end of regulation.

I know a lot of you don't think I hurt as much as you do because I am a fan of other teams especially Kentucky but trust me this one hurts me just as much. Just because I follow other teams doesn't mean these losses especially like today are any easier to take.

I don't understand how we lost this game I mean I see the numbers I get it 50% from the line 21% from 3 and 15 turnovers but I can't understand how a team this good on offense struggled so bad to such a terrible defensive team.

The 50% FT shooting stands out the most because this was one of the best FT shooting teams in the nation and we had our best shooters missing those.

CJ missed 1 and he almost never does but you give him a pass because you can't make them all.

Washington missing those 2 in clutch time was something I never expected I was so happy when he got fouled I assumed both go in.

That last 3 point shot though will live with all of all and especially with Washington all off season.

Losing is always tough but losing to a team your expected to beat and beat easily is really a rough thing to have to live with.

This team over achieved this year I never dreamed to start the season they would get so many great wins get to the Big Ten Finals and go OT and get a #2 seed.

Hope most everyone is back and give it another go next year.
