Carmel High School receiver Austin Roberts has the right mix of size, strength and speed.
It doesn?t hurt that the senior-to-be has the benefit of instruction by an NFL coach at his fingertips. His father Alfredo Roberts is the Indianapolis Colts tight ends coach and a former NFL tight end.
Austin, who been invited to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January, has more than 20 scholarship offers. Among the schools he is heavily considering are Ohio State, Florida, Miami (Fla.), Alabama and Louisville. UCLA became a dark-horse possibility when it offered Thursday, Austin said.
In the class of 2014, the 6-2, 215-pounder is ranked No. 1 in the state by ESPN and Rivals.com and No. 3 by 247sports.com.
?He?s got some favorable rankings and that?s good for him, but you still have to make sure you do the work on the football field,? Alfredo Roberts said. ?I just try to keep him focused. In my day, there weren?t as many distractions.?
When he attends practices or games, Alfredo is just a father watching his son. Later, he switches gears while evaluating video with his son, offering advice on how Austin can grow as a player and leader. Alfredo also has regular outings with Austin and twin brother Avery, a backup Carmel receiver, along with Greyhounds quarterback John Lampe.
?When he is on the field the field, it?s my domain, I got the whistle on and I?m coach Roberts and I coach him like I?m coaching Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener,? Alfredo said. ?I know he?s not going to play like those guys, but I expect him to do a certain thing a certain way.?
