'13 OH F Nigel Hayes (Wisconsin Verbal)

Three recruits to visit Minnesota on Friday ... and other notes
Posted by: Amelia Rayno under College basketball, Gophers players Updated: September 5, 2012

A few notes as we anticipate the start of basketball season ? team practice officially starts in mid-October, sooner than you think:

First off, the Gophers start campus visits rounds this week with three Class of 2013 recruits coming on Friday:

Nigel Hayes: a 6-7, 215-pound power forward from Toledo, Ohio, with good range and the ability to score on his own in the post. Besides Minnesota, Hayes has offers from Stanford, Wisconsin and Ohio State that he?s seriously considering. Right now, it seems like Minnesota might be the school he?s edging out.

Stanford, like other elite academic institutions (i.e., Harvard, Vanderbilt, Duke) has a number of slots they make available for athletes who otherwise would never in a million years qualify for admission. Not saying this is the case with Nigel, of course, but if you're good enough at hoop or grid you generally can find your way in.

Wisconsin head coach = Bo Ryan
Minnesota head coach = Tubby Smith

Just sayin': If it was me, I'd be edging out Wisconsin.

Nigel Hayes: "I'm looking for a school ... where I can win multiple championships."

Recruit Nigel Hayes is seeking in a school is the ability to ?win multiple championships in my college career.?

And so far, he hasn?t eliminated the University of Minnesota as a provider of that goal.
After officially visiting Minnesota last weekend, Hayes ? a Toledo, Ohio native -- left impressed overall.

None of the three recruits in for the weekend -- Gavin Schilling and Cedric Hankerson were the others ? gave a verbal commitment, according to a source.

?I came in thinking Minnesota was a nice program,? Hayes said. ?My impression was they?re nice, but my impression afterward was that they have a lot more to offer than I previously knew.?

In particular, he was interested in the Gophers? strength and conditioning program ? which focuses more on speed and power than raw heavy lifting. He like the team?s ideology about an up-tempo style of play (the Gophers haven?t always succeeded in that, but coach Tubby Smith has long stated that they want to play that way), the style that fits his skills, he says. Even though Hayes didn?t visit the Carlson School of Business, he likes the possibility (?When it?s all said and done I want to be a CEO,? he said. ?I don?t know of what yet, but that?s my goal?). He said Smith had a good sense of humor. And the raised court in Williams Arena that creates so many complaints?

?I thought it was nice, actually,? Hayes said. ?It?s kind of more, in my mind, like a stage as in it?s above everyone else, so their attention is focused higher, like directly on you I guess in a way.?

The arena, however, looked much smaller than it did on TV, he said.

Hayes visited Wisconsin the previous weekend (he said the Badgers and Gophers programs were ?hand-in-hand?) and still has scheduled visits with Stanford and Ohio State. Only after all his visits, Hayes said, will he start to weigh the options and make a decision, likely before his senior high school season starts.

One thing that will NOT be a factor is city size. Hayes said he has no preference between the ?big-city? feel of Minneapolis or the college small-town feel of Madison.

But if he does pick a Big Ten school, which is likely, his coach Bruce Smith said physically the big kid will fit right in immediately.

?My son (Ryan Smith, Purdue) just got done playing for four years in that league and I know how physical the league is,? Bruce Smith said. ?He?s certainly got an advantage there because he?s not going to have to go in and alter his body like a lot of kids that play in the Big Ten have to, from high school ? he?s going to be ready to play physically right away.?

Hayes making school decision soon
Posted by: Amelia Rayno under College basketball Updated: October 9, 2012

Toledo recruit Nigel Hayes has now finished all of his planned official tours and is gearing up to make a decision soon, he said, between his four schools: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Stanford and Ohio State.

"I don?t have a specific date but I do know it will be done before my season starts [on Dec. 1]? he said.

Hayes said the biggest factors that will play a role in where he goes will be: how comfortable he is with the coaches, the developmental opportunities, playing time and academics, as well as input from his parents.

Right now, his mom?s favorite is Wisconsin. His step-dad is impartial.

Hayes is planning to major in business and the business program that most stood out to him was Stanford?s he said.

Stanford also ties with Wisconsin for the best atmosphere/campus, he said. ?Stanford?s was just a beautiful campus, being in California and all but Wisconsin was just a great college town and it seemed like it would be a great place to go to school,? he said.

Stanford won for facilities and equipment as well.

Notice a trend? Hayes mentioned that he really like Minnesota coach Tubby Smith and that his parents did also, and he mentioned a great game experience at Ohio State with coaches and players, but overall, Wisconsin and Stanford were mentioned the most.

Read what you will into all that, and it is by no means a full picture of his decision-making. Regardless, according to Hayes, we?ll all know soon.

Stanford won for facilities and equipment? I find that hard to believe. Wisconsin and OSU both have palacial basketball facilities that were built less than 20 years ago. Stanford's Maples Pavilion was built in the 60's and only seats about 7,400, and it looks like a fairly ordinary building from the outside.

I'd bet his comment didn't relate to the performance venue, but rather the facilities made available for training and recreation.

Stanford campus is also fabulously beautiful.

Atmosphere/campus was a separate category from facilities/equipment, though. IMO, Maples is so far behind the Kohl Center and the Schott, it's not reasonable to think they could make up the difference with a better practice facility/weight room - I think you've got to weight the facility you're playing in as by far one of the most important parts of the facility/equipment equation.

Maybe, but Stanford has put a number of players in the league with those 'subpar' facilities.

If I was good enough for a D1 full-ride in any sport I'd be hard pressed not to choose Stanford.

The older he gets, the more Hayes is looking body-wise like Deshaun. I'm not saying he's on DT's level at all. I am saying that Nigel seems to be a fit from a physical (and skill) standpoint for the type of player that Matta is looking to use at the 4 in his system.
