'13 OH F Nigel Hayes (Wisconsin Verbal)

Nigel Hayes looks the part of a big-time player. He has a strong, sturdy build and long arms. Hayes does a good job of blocking shots and is solid at the defensive end. He is a superb athlete capable of highlight reel dunks. However, he is not great offensively and does not seem to have much of a jumper as he is working on transitioning to the wing, but has time to develop.

Hayes, a 6-foot-6 forward out of Toledo?s Whitmer HS, is a Class of 2013 prospect with offers from Toledo, Xavier, Central Michigan, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Akron as well as interest from Memphis, Ohio State and others.

Xavier is the school recruiting him the hardest and the only one he has visited. He has no trips planned.

On whether he has a favorite: ?No, not really, or Ohio State and Xavier.?

Hayes? brother is an incoming freshman football player at Ohio State and although he too plays football, he said he will definitely be playing basketball in college.

Of a commitment timetable: ?It?s still out there, I?m just trying?that?s a later time.?

More than meets the eye

Nigel-Hayes-averaged-13-4-points.jpg

Nigel Hayes averaged 13.4 points and led Whitmer to the Division I state championship game. THE BLADE/JEREMY WADSWORTH

In the classroom, Whitmer's Hayes has a 4.1 grade-point average, while on the court he averaged 13.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season. One of those numbers is more impressive than the other.

His coach, Smith, contends that anyone who judges Hayes merely by his statistics is missing the point.

"He could have averaged 23 points a game, but we wouldn't have been 24-3 if he had done that," said Smith, whose team advanced to the Division I state final, where it fell to Pickerington Central.

At 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, and with guard skills, Hayes could end up at a major college program. ESPN rates him Ohio's fifth best player in this class, behind No. 1 Loving and No. 3 Donnal.

Thus far he has elicited offers from Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, Central Michigan, and UT, and Smith said tournaments the next two weekends are "very, very big for him."

Based on the prestige of other suitors, UT won't be favored to land Hayes -- but that's not a given, his coach said.

"I think the world of Tod Kowalczyk. He's a heck of a basketball coach," Smith said. "Until Nigel narrows it down, I'd say yes, they absolutely have a chance."

I am somewhat surprised by this offer:confused:

Yeah me too, but the coaches must have liked what they saw at summer tournaments. We are getting pretty thin on numbers, and swinging for the fences recently with national recruits... while coming back empty handed. Other than Ross and Scott, we've had minimal success outside of regional Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan recruiting.

It seems like a move to get a body with some potential, but certainly not a sure fire top prospect, reminds me of a Trey McDonald offer. A bit early for this IMO, but Matta knows what he's doing.

Agree. Maybe we are spending too much time in Bayou country but I guess it's trust the coaches.

I think he might have a little more potential than Trey but (I better not say anymore)

No inside info besides knowing the Toledo basketball scene pretty well, but my best guess is that Marc lobbied pretty hard for Matta to extend Hayes an offer. They have been best friends for years and have played basketball together since at least the 7th grade. That kind of chemistry is almost impossible to replicate, and could potentially be a spark for the entire team. But I agree that this is an interesting offer; without the back story, it probably wouldn't have happened.

With all due respect to your knowledge of the Toledo basketball scene, I seriously doubt if Matta would do a package deal especially since Loving gave a verbal close to 2 years ago.
