'13 OH F Nigel Hayes (Wisconsin Verbal)

I grow tired of these athletes thinking they are entitled to money. Is there no love for the game? The accolades, the media attention, being the BMOC, networking for the rest of your career, having a forum to audition for professionals...none of that matters, only money? Those awesome facilities and travelling conditions (charter planes), where do you think those came from? How much money does each player get? Does the 5th player off the bench at Wright State get the same amount as the fifth player off the bench at an SEC school? What a joke....college athletes are lacking for NOTHING. We've all seen it. If it's not enough for you, go get a better deal playing "pro" ball somewhere where no one watches and no one cares.

If in fact Hayes was soliciting and accepting money based solely on his status as an athlete I cannot see how this is not an NCAA violation. Supposedly there have already been donations made to the account mentioned. There is no difference between that and $100 (or $1000) handshakes. He just told them where to deposit the money instead of shaking their hand while he took it.

I'm not really in favor of paying the players per se, as there are a lot of issues that come with that. But why can't athletes at least make money off their image?
because football players at tOSU would make tons of money and quite easily, while those going to western michigan wouldnt... thus giving tOSU a huge advantage... well another one.

CBS Sports Preseason All-America
Third team
Nigel Hayes | Wisconsin | Senior | Forward

Wisconsin's going to get another great year from Hayes, who's at 16.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists for his career per 40 minutes. Hayes, a combo forward, was the Big Ten pick in the preseason for player of the year. He'll team up with Bronson Koenig and Ethan Happ for a great trio in Madison, but we've got Hayes making All-America because his shooting percentage almost certainly should go up, and his all-around numbers will likely spike as well. Plus, Wisconsin's bringing back almost everyone, so this should be a 4 seed at worst.

I'm thinking Ohio State really "missed the boat" by not getting this guy. I wonder how much of his brother's (Kenny Hayes) problems* (i.e. football situation at Ohio State) contributed to Ohio State not getting Nigel.

*Hayes, a defensive end who was a 2011 recruit for the Buckeyes, played for Toledo Whitmer High School. Known as “Kenny,” Hayes was redshirted his first year at OSU, then had to sit out spring practices in 2012 because of recurring headaches. He was released by the Buckeyes at his request so he could transfer to the University of Toledo in 2012.

Hayes and Loving went to the same junior high school together. I think that Loving went to a better high school with stronger academic standards.. I also believe that there might have been a little bit of friction between these two guys but that is just me..

There were absolutely some academic concerns there. If what I heard is true (and it was from a pretty good source), Hayes tried to transfer to St. John's Jesuit from Whitmer twice, but could not get in. I believe academics are what ultimately led him away from Ohio State as well. It seems like he's really grown up since then.

The other thing that would absolutely come into play - Title IX. You can't just pay the athletes playing money-generating sports. You'd have to pay all of them, including the women, even though many of the other sports exist because of the revenue generated by football and men's hoops. What would ultimately happen is a lot of those other sports would disappear at the collegiate level.

To fix the farce of student athlete exploitation, you must destroy the system that supports the actual student athletes in non revenue sports so you can let the largely fake student athletes capitalize on their earning power in their athletic field of study.

It's a farce cut one that benefits all in life changing ways. The only improvement that does not cripple the system is a small addition to their stipend and better benefits.
