Orlando Boone punter Johnny Townsend, who is committed to Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class, received a nice little surprise on Monday after practice.
The 6-foot, 200-pound senior even thought the news that he had been named an All-American might have been the work of some practical jokers, but it didn't take long for him to find out it was for real.
Townsend, who averages 43.8 yards per punt this season, has been named to the East roster for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played Jan. 5, in San Antonio, Texas.
"It's incredible ... just a huge honor. When I first found out, I was a little in shock because it seemed so unreal," Townsend said. "To get an opportunity to play in such a big game like this is just a huge honor.
"I wouldn?t be able to do it without coach Nick Fleming at Dr. Phillips or and coach Michael Husted at NCS [National Camp Series], who both helped me get to this point."
Fleming, a former Florida Gators kicker, is an assistant coach with Dr. Phillips this season. He has been heavily involved with area kickers in his weekly kicking camps. Husted is a former NFL kicker who now devotes his focus to his own business Husted Kicking.
Townsend joins former Boone players WR Marvin Bracy (2012), now at Florida State, and OL David Harding (2008), now at Duke, as recent Boone All-Americans. They both played in the Under Armour All-American Game.
He also makes the fifth Ohio State commit to be invited the 2013 Army Bowl. Townsend joins fellow future Buckeyes ATH Ezkiel Elliott of John Burroughs School (St. Louis, Mo.), DT Michael Hillof Pendleton (S.C.), OT Evan Lisle of Centerville (Ohio) and CB Eli Woodard of Voorhees (N.J.) Eastern.
