'10 PA DB Cullen Christian (TTUN signee; transfer to Pitt; transfer to WVU)

I think it sucks that we couldn't at least get him on campus for a big game. Atmosphere alone has got to blow scUM's away. Where as 2 weeks ago it looked as if we may get 4 solid DB's in this class, we might only get 2 w/ how things stand right now. I like locking up a few and then cooling on recruits. Cooling on recruits and then hoping to get a few during the Army All-American / UA games or on LOI day is a dangerous game. That's how you end up with 4 year role players filling out the class vs. 1st and 2nd year contributors (play-makers) which we need.

c'mon, the sky isn't falling and certainly not on our DB recruiting. imo, your statement may be relevant in positions like DT, OL in the past 5 years. even given that, our OL recruiting has vastly evolved and improved from the year when we pulled in the Brew's Crew, and DT has seen some positive movement these couple of years. My point is that our coaches has had proven themselves more than capable of reeling in, sometimes raw, great defensive back talent, and, often than not, able to turn those talents into great skills. All in all, i am the least worried about our recruitment of defensive backs, let alone cullen christian. Like some posters above had mentioned, if this means that we will have enough ships and more attention to pull in Floyd and/or Hankins, i am ALL for staff's decision in Christian's situation.

Gateway's aerial attack routs Penn Hills

By Pat Mitsch, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, November 14, 2009

. . .

Then, after a Gateway false start, Kalkstein hit tight end Steve Vranka for 32 yards on third-and-20. Three incompletions later, on fourth-and-10 from the 38, Felder beat Cullen Christian up the right side, and Kalkstein hit him in stride for another score with 1:01 remaining.

Five plays into the second half, Armstead Williams, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior got behind Christian up the right side on third down, and Kalkstein hit him for a 54-yard score.

Recruits aren't fans - they don't really care about the game-day atmosphere.

Ohio State should get three or four more DB's in this class, but Cullen won't be one of them.

I don't know how you can tell, right now, whether Cullen will be a "4 year role player" or a "1st and 2nd year contributor (play-maker)". The same goes for any other recruit that you might have in mind. I remember how Ohio State fans villified Tressel for wasting scholarships on no-name prospects like Malcolm Jenkins and Chimdi Chekwa and Donald Washington, all of whom have had some success in the Buckeyes' defensive backfield in recent years.

The Buckeye staff has apparently decided to pass on Cullen, which means that either (1) they feel he is more likely to be in the former category (role player), and/or (2) they feel that he is not genuinely interested in Ohio State, regardless of which category he falls into (role player or play maker).

Scout $ - No OSU Trip For Christian

By Bob Lichtenfels
Posted Nov 14, 2009

Same info with some quotes from his Dad. Ohio State asked Christian to postpone his visit and his decision. Doesn't sound like the request is sitting well with him or his father. Now he's trying to get an OV scheduled to Pittsburgh for the Notre Dame game.

Sounds to me like the coaches didn't want to waste their time on someone they knew just wanted some freebies. JMHO

I don't agree w/ you on that one. Numerous recruits have committed on the spot after attending an OSU Game. Sure, there is more that goes into their decision than just the atmosphere @ a game, but I do think it does play a part. I wouldn't want to go some place where the fans didn't care about the result of the games and only 30,000 people show up to watch. I also think a lot of the kids that grow up in Ohio grow up wanting to play in a stadium like the shoe w/ 100,000 plus in the seats every weekend. You hear these kids quote the type of game day atmosphere in these threads as they return from officials all the time.

Which 3 or 4 do you still feel OSU are going to get?

I'm not saying you can tell that they are going to be great just b/c of his scout ranking or *rating, but if you get 3 or 4 quality 4* DB's in the class, chances are a few will pan out. I just don't like the late offers just to fill a class if we miss out on the guys we targeted early. Thats all I'm saying. There is a reason why the staff offers some kids earlier than others. Obviously they like some kids better than others as well or they would just throw out offers to every DB.

Sure, there will always be diamonds in the ruff in every class. And I do like when you see an occasional in-state recruit who really wants to be a Buckeye get a late offer. Especially in a situation like Cullen's where the staff maybe would have held a spot if there was a mutual interest. Maybe Howard this year.

GO BUCKS!!!!

Here are the uncommitted DBs whom we've offered (I included Elam because of his waffling on his verbal):

Anderson
Bryant
Elam (UF "soft" verbal)
Grimes
Joyner
Mitchell
Riggs
Shaw

If I've missed one, let me know...any three of these would be a great haul.

I agree. Any of those 3 would be great pick ups esp. after the seasons Anderson and Bryant are having. Joyner would be the icing though. After looking @ the current offers out, I do see a possible 3 (the 3 I mentioned), I just don't see a possible 4th from that group like JeffLordBuck sees.

Keep in mind we have Chad Hagan as a safety already committed...

that's true, wasn't including Hagen.

After looking @ the depth chart again and seeing what we actually have coming back next year in the defensive backfield (like some earlier posters have mentioned already about our depth in the back end), it does appear that we are good numbers-wise even if we would only happen to get a few of the remaining DB targets.

Okay, so give me a list ... and if there are any names on that list, how many of them were not "locks" to Ohio State to begin with?

Fans like to think that they help their team to win games ... and they also like to think that they help convince recruits to come to their school. In reality, neither proposition is true very often.

Well, if you count the spring game, Darrell Givens? :)
