IMO, this offer might be too little too late....

Welch Commits To Notre Dame
By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette
Notre Dame picked up its fourth verbal, non-binding commitment for the Class of 2010 on Monday when tight end Alex Welch chose the Irish, according to multiple web sites including Irish Sports Daily.
The 6-foot-5 Welch, from Cincinnati, played at Elder, the same high school as current sophomore Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph.
The No. 10 rated tight end in the country according to Rivals.com, Welch chose Notre Dame over Ohio State and a host of other schools who offered him scholarships.
Welch joins wide receiver Daniel Smith, defensive end Chris Martin and offensive lineman Christian Lombard as Notre Dame commitments in this class.
It also adds to an impressive tight end haul for the Irish since Charlie Weis arrived in South Bend.

Irish close the book on tight ends

When tight end Alex Welch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame in mid-May, it seemed like just a matter of time before he committed to the Fighting Irish. That is exactly what happened over the weekend as he pulled the trigger on Sunday night.
"I called coach (Charlie) Weis and told him," Welch said. "He was excited. He said I made his Memorial Day weekend."
Welch also closed the book on tight ends for Weis' 2010 recruiting class. The Irish have a young and talented group of tight ends returning next season.
"They told me they were only taking one tight end this year," Welch said. "I knew that before I committed."
Among Notre Dame's returning tight ends is former Elder star Kyle Rudolph, who became a starter his freshman season for the Fighting Irish.
"Him being there is a plus," Welch said. "I can learn from him. But I made the decision on my own. I just thought personally Notre Dame is the best place for me. It's a place I can succeed."
Welch isn't worried about the number of tight ends already on Notre Dame's roster.
"They run a lot of two and three tight end sets," he said.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder had two dozen scholarship offers before committing to the Irish. His list included Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State, Stanford, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and North Carolina.
Welch' uncle is former Notre Dame linebacker Steve Heimkreiter.
Alex Welch -- "I didn't want this to happen. I wanted coach Weis to get another chance, but it is what it is. For me, I committed to the school. I want to see who they hire, but I'm still solid with my commitment. As far as (fellow Cincinnati native) Andrew Hendrix, I don't want to put words in his mouth."
