'10 OH RB Erick Howard (Ohio U Walk-On)

It is not a matter of him getting an offer.. It sounds like the coaches want him. It is on him getting the scores and grades in order. Sounds like the kid is working as hard as he can. I hope it works out for him and he becomes a Buckeye. Regardless it looks like if the kid keeps working hard he is going to have a place to go to school for free.

Yeah I know but competition is always a good thing. Some of the best CFB of recent times have had multiple very talented RBs in their stable and they let their play speak for themselves on who will play. And the way that we've been running the ball as of late and the number of injuries that we sustained this year, I don't see a problem in having so many RBs. I wouldn't want to see another scenario next year where we're left with 2 schollie RBs and have to possibly play walk ons. And I think Martin could get moved back to FB, opening up a spot for Howard, and I'm saying that just because of the possible depth that we could have at TB. And a player or 2 could possibly RS as well.

Except that's incredibly unlikely with 5 returning RBs & 1-2 newcomers.

Boren has taken the FB position by storm.

For a team with an offensive philosophy that depends so much on establishing a running game, RB depth is critical. Some guys don't pan out to what their hoped for potential was (Mo Wells, Lydell Ross), others battle injuries (both Herron and Saine this year), sometimes you have guys leave early (Beanie) or transfer (JaJa Riley, Eric Haw). Despite very high level and consistent recruiting, we've gotten thin a few times, which has been costly. This season, we were down to a true freshman and a converted FB at one point. Now, it came at a soft spot in the schedule, but what if you're looking at having that happen right before the PSU-Iowa-scUM portion of the schedule? Fortunately, both Hall and Martin turned out to be pleasant surprises.

Anyway, here's hoping the kid can get done what he needs to in order to earn an offer.

Well put. I agree. You can't forget just 2 years ago when USC was hyped as having the best stable of RB's in the country. They were all over SI and other sports magazine covers. They started camp being 8-10 deep @ TB. And if I remember correctly, due to injury, transfers, academics, ect... they were down to 2 or 3 by week 7 or 8. And what was a position of depth @ the beginning of the year turned out to be a position of weakness with not a lot of experience (tho very talent-filled). You can never have too many good RB's.

If you can bring in another quality RB, you do it. Especially if the kid has the talent to play on any Big 10 team and HE WANTS TO BE A BUCKEYE. He may not get his chance to shine until his Jr. or Sr. year, but a lot of guys that come to OSU are like that. I'm sure he is aware of the numbers @ the position. He can play here, he wants to be here, I hope he gets it.

And that's been my main point, that RB depth is a great thing! Especially when all the kids are fine with competition and want to Buckeyes and continue our tradition. This kid is a beast and many of us feel he could be a very special player for us. No offense to any of the guys we currently have but Howard just seems like a special RB that can battle through the Big 10. Our worst fears came true this year and we had some decent depth at RB, we had inexperienced guys starting at RB. Our main starters in Boom and Zoom have shown that they're injury prone, Berry hasn't been healthy since he's stepped on campus and thats not a good thing. RBs will always get dinged up, especially in our conference and moreso with how our offense is run. Why not bring in Howard and if need be R/S him, or Smith if we have to, but I just don't see a reason in passing up on a kid that wants to be a Buckeye and is uber talented.

But even with Boren pretty locked in at FB, you don't think we need multiple FBs with the amount we run the ball? Wouldn't a little more athleticism at the position be a good thing?

We already have a back up FB in Homan. I agree that Howard is a really talented kid, but I just don't see room in this fairly small class for 3 RB's. It doesnt make sense. You have Saine, Herron, Hall, Berry, Homan, Martin, Boren already here and with Hyde enrolling in January, and Smith committed, that is 9 total that will be on scholarship, with only 1 being a SR. I just dont see the reasoning behind devoting 10 scholarships to RB's in this day in age with a scholarship limit of 85. That would be more scholarships than we have used on WR's for 2010....Just my opinion though.

And it would be nice to have 8 quarterbacks, 30 OL, & 20 WRs, but there isn't room to just add that kind of depth. OSU's rb depth chart is already stacked, it doesn't need more bodies.

I agree. If I'm the staff, given the RBs already on board, I only feel differently if I think Howard is a top 5 RB nationally.

Boren is moving to D. He prefers to play D but helped out at FB this year because of need. Hyde also could be a FB. Look for a transfer or someone not meeting admisson requirements. There is something to this for the staff to offer at this point. It also could be a greyshirt offer.
