And how certain are we that he is moving? I don't think even he would risk losing a guaranteed starting position for a chance to back up someone.

Look for a transfer or someone not meeting admisson requirements. There is something to this for the staff to offer at this point. It also could be a greyshirt offer.

Erick Howard, Ohio's Mr. Football for 2009, is only the second player to receive the high school football honor twice. Howard also received the title in 2008.
NORTH CANTON ? .There is only one award out there that Erick Howard hasn?t won. He might have the popularity to be named Hoover High School?s prom king later in the school year now.
Howard is just the second player in Ohio high school football history to be named Mr. Football two years in a row. Hoover?s record-setting running back and linebacker was crowned the 2009 Mr. Football by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
The award is voted on by a panel of sports writers from around the state. Euclid?s Robert Smith (1988-89) is the only other player to win Mr. Football twice.
?Really? You swear? I?m shocked right now,? Howard said when informed that he received the award.
Howard was named Hoover?s homecoming king. He?s a two-time Mr. Football winner. Now, he has his eyes on being prom king.
?They said that it can?t be done,? Howard said. ?They said that no one wins homecoming and prom king in the same year. If someone nominates me, maybe I?ll win. Who knows? I didn?t expect to win this.?

When it comes to high school football honors, the Mr. Football award in Ohio is one of the most prestigious in the nation. Past recipients include future NFL players such as Robert Smith, Charles Woodson, Bobby Hoying, and Curtis Enis. Winners this decade alone include college stars Tyrell Sutton, Maurice Clarett, Ben Mauck and Brandon Saine.
In the 23 years the award has been given out, only Robert Smith had won the award twice. That was until Canton Hoover's Erick Howard repeated the feat earlier this week. Interestingly enough, one of the other finalists for the award was Columbus DeSales lineman Trevor Jackson. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Jackson is already committed to Michigan State.

Sunday Special: Howard hits the books, hoping to qualify for Div. I offers

Now that North Canton Hoover running back Erick Howard has two consecutive Mr. Football awards to add to his glowing high school football profile, what is next for the record-setting player? Howard has not verbally committed to a FBS college because he isn?t NCAA Clearinghouse qualified yet.
Howard has offers, but without making it through the Clearinghouse, it?s a moot point to accept an offer. Howard?s overall grade-point average is above a 2.0, but his core GPA is below a 2.0, which is the NCAA minimum for core classes (English, math, etc.).
What Howard has to do is raise his core GPA to at least a 2.0 and bring his composite ACT score from an 81 to an 86. Neither is out of reach.
?We?re waiting to see how his semester grades come out to see if he gets closer to being a qualifier,? Hoover head coach Don Hertler Jr. said. ?As of today, he?s a nonqualifier for Division I schools. That?s up to him on how serious he wants to take that.
?My hope is that he buckles down and makes the grades to qualify for Division I. But a lot of guys have taken different paths and been successful. It will all be how determined he is to do the academics.?
Howard is a well-spoken high school football player. Poor decisions he made as a freshman put his core GPA under water. Now he?s working to make that up.
If there is a silver lining to Hoover?s season ending after one playoff game, Howard said, it?s that he gets more time to focus on his grades.
?Right now, I?m working hard to get the grades,? Howard said. ?If I don?t get the grades, I?m thinking about prep schools or going to an Akron or Cincinnati or a smaller Division I school and transferring out after a year.?
Eddie George, who won a Heisman Trophy at Ohio State, arrived in Columbus via Fork Union Military Academy. Another prominent prep school is Kiski Prep in Pennsylvania. Some notable football players who went through Kiski first include Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark, former Bears running back Curtis Enis and going back to Harry Stuhldreher who went to Kiski from Massillon and then he went on to star as a member of the Four Horsemen at Notre Dame.
PROJECTING HOWARD
Ohio State is interested in Howard and Head Coach Jim Tressel understands the importance of keeping a two-time Mr. Football winner in-state. But Howard needs to be qualified to do that.
What kind of college player will Howard make? I think he?s a defensive player and Howard said he wouldn?t mind giving a safety position a try. Todd Blackledge has seen more college football from across the country than anyone in Stark County. Blackledge is one of the best college football analysts for ESPN.
?He?s just a football player,? Blackledge said. ?The bottom line is you?re looking for football player. He may not have some of the eye-popping measurables other guys may have and he may not have that flat-out speed people are looking for in a big-time tailback, but he?s a football player. There?s somewhere he?ll be able to play and help a team.?
